If I remember my history, this sounds like the French revolutionaries of the 18th century right before the reign of terror. Everything was about celebrating "reason" over religion.

Which meant belief in the latest hare brained secular scheme (although the King and Queen weren’t too marvelous examples of Christian faith, truth be told, so the competition wasn’t very stiff).
