USCCB hires Sarah Palin advisor as Cardinal Dolan’s spokesperson

The e-mail went out this morning:

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops welcomes Kim Daniels on board as spokesperson for the president of the USCCB, Cardinal Timothy Dolan.

Daniels brings to the USCCB her experience as director of Catholic Voices USA, an organization of lay Catholics that works to bring the positive message of the Church across a broad range of issues to the public square. She is also an attorney whose practice has focused on religious liberty matters. Daniels and her husband have six children and are active members of their parish in the Archdiocese of Washington. She is a graduate of Princeton University and the University of Chicago Law School.

Talking Points Memo mentioned her in a piece they did three years ago:

Paid $21,000 by Palin’s PAC in the second half of 2009, Daniels is a Maryland attorney who, according to the Times, prepares a daily briefing for Palin.

Daniels has been identified as an attorney with the Thomas More Law Center....

ANALYSIS: Will former Palin adviser help or hurt bishops’ media woes?
David Gibson - Apr 29, 2013

"Moreover, Daniels’ hiring could come off as exploiting her gender. A year ago Dolan said that the USCCB would do better to hire an “attractive, articulate, intelligent” laywoman to present its message because, as he put it, “In the public square, I hate to tell you, the days of fat, balding Irish bishops are over.”"

"A final wrinkle: Dolan’s three-year term as USCCB president ends in November, and a new president may want to use Daniels in a different capacity, or not at all."

Good, maybe Sarah will come back to the Church now!

If you did not intend to speak derogatorily and in-your-face to and about non-Roman Catholic FReepers, what ever do you mean by this statement? I believe Sarah Palin is a professed believer in Jesus Christ and is a member of the Holy Catholic Church, as am I, a Protestant.

Bishops and Cardinals have spokepeople to get the word out when they are busy doing their other pastoral duties which no lay person can do. In a diocese near me, which I am very knowledgable about, the spokesperson does research the bishop simply doesn’t have time to do, stays on the phone with reporters for hours at a time (which the bishop doesn’t have the time to do) and makes sure the same unified gospel based message goes out over the internet, through email, in the diocesan paper, etc. The bishop, meanwhile, is ordaining new priests and deacons, performing confirmations, baptisms, saying Masses, and hearing confessions at the cathedral.

Perhaps you did not know that Sarah Palin is a baptized Catholic. Even though not practicing, she is still a baptized Catholic with a permanent mark on her soul from that Baptism.

Whether this is "it" or not, I think it's a step in the right direction.

And there's nothing wrong with having a "spokesperson". Moses had Aaron. Peter, John Mark. Barnabas, Paul --- or so it seemed in today's reading, Acts 14:5-18, which was a little comical, don't you think?) So, many worthy people need help communicating. Some, more than others.

The bishops seem to be in the "Especially Needy" category.

Interesting development. Though I’m not exactly anticipating it,I would not be totally surprised if Sarah
Palin converted to Catholicism someday.
