Religion can be a source of comfort that improves well-being. But some kinds of religiosity could be a sign of deeper mental health issues.
Seeing their kids more eager to pray than play video games, most parents would shout, Hallelujah or whatever their expression of joy. And they should. Research shows that religion can be a positive force in the lives of children, just as can be for adults. Religion, says Bill Hathaway, a clinical psychologist of religion and Dean of the School of Psychology and Counseling at Regent University, is related to the child having a higher sense of self esteem, better academic adjustment and lower rates of substance abuse and delinquent or criminal behavior.
So if your child is immersed in scripture after school and prays regularly throughout the day, you may breathe a sigh of relief. Shes such a good girl. My boy is okay.
Or maybe not. Your childs devotion may be a great thing, but there are some kids whose religious observances require a deeper look. For these children, an overzealous practice of their family faith or even another faith may be a sign of an underlying mental health issue or a coping mechanism for dealing with unaddressed trauma or stress.

So they must be liberated in their thinking in order to enjoy the highly sexualized culture of their secular peers.
What a f**ked-up article.
Thus the barf in the title
Sure. In this marxist country, all expressions of religion are seen as subversive. Except the middle eastern death cult.
Absolutely... that wasn't a slam on you for posting it, but that author.
So my daughter’s overseas missions work is not ok?
Absolutely not. And my daughter studying theology over in Austria would be enough to have her committed.
Jesus tells us that we will be dispised for following Him. And we need to remember that our true home is with him and not here on this speck of dirt.
I’ll take a Christian teen that likes to pray a lot over an infidel hating Muslim teen that will detonate himself killing others any day of the week...
Aren’t crazed Muslim terrorists too religious?
There’s a strain of OCD in my family. My son suffered greatly from it in his early teens - it was eating his life, although in his case it was not religious.
It is certainly possible for OCD to take on a religious manifestion, or for faith to become a source of great anxiety. Am I saved? Did I have a sinful thought? I must say 100 Our Fathers. Did I concentrate and really mean each one of those prayers? I need to say them again. I had a sinful thought. Will God take my mother because I am a sinner? Did I commit the sin against the Holy Spirit? I thought the sin against the Holy Spirit. God is going to punish me, God is going to take my mother, forgive me God, I didn’t mean to, I will fast and pray, please don’t let me think the sin against the Holy Spirit.
By all means, Time/Yahoo, tell Muslim parents that their children are “too religious” because they pray five times a day and observe the dietary laws of Islam. I’m sure they would be open to this idea....or is this only aimed at Christian parents who should not teach the next generation that the Bible is the unchangeable Word of God and literally, “words to live by.”
Bible teacher Dr. J. Vernon McGee predicted that the believing Church in America (not the mainline "progressives") would have to go underground like in China to avoid the same kind of persecution and incarceration.
Yet the same libs are wondering why a tv miniseries on the Bible becomes number 1.
People who have a disorder can over do it, or ignore the big picture entirely, as they count bad thoughts, or whatever. So, disordered people could and do misuse the Bible. But just because you are very interested doesn’t mean you are going off the deep end. Not every Bible Geek is at risk like that. Few are.
My daughter’s reading of the Bible lately has prompted some very important conversations with me about relationships, differences between how the world views things and how Christians do, etc. The use to which the Bible reading is put matters. And parental guidance has as much of a role to play in Bible Study as in anything else a child is getting very interested in.
