Study: 'Toxic Perfectionism' Major Part of LDS Women's Depression

OREM —Striving for perfection may be driving some female members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to depression, one researcher says.

Utah Valley University professor Kris Doty looked at depression among LDS women, finding that "toxic perfectionism" was one major factor of depression reported by the group. The other four factors, Doty found, were genetics, history of abuse, family relationships and feeling judged by others.

Over a one-year period, Doty and her colleagues looked at clinically diagnosed depressed women who identified as LDS. Seven of the women were using multiple medications to treat their depression, 19 were on only one medication and 10 had participated in therapy. Women in the study said the church's teachings about perfection led to painful misinterpretations wherein many women believed they could not make mistakes. This belief, Doty said, caused them to "become hyper-competitive and anxious."

At a symposium on the topic Thursday, study participants said church leaders were reminding women —especially mothers —that they are not required to be perfect.

You are just useful as a tool to once again tell SLC Mormons that they are HELLBOUND for not following what their ‘god’ continually tells them to do in their precious scripture: D&C 132:58-66

Ok i was slow to catch on to what you were saying. yes if that was what was actually said they might be dammed, using your words

But you did not get it right.

132- 58to 66 is not a law that forces or even suggests that every man have more than one wife but is the law of the priest hood if ordained by God and there can only be one priest on earth at one time.

Also this is confirmed by the book of Mormon.

(Jacob 2:27-29)

A: “Wherefore, my brethren, hear me, and hearken to the word of the Lord: For there shall not any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none;

So since Joesph was the priest( in my view self appointed ) he was simply making sure he could have as many wives as he wanted.

As far as the other Mormons are concerned, they can only do the same thing if they are commanded to, and no one at least at that time was commanded to, maybe they were later on but i am not reading no more, enough.

This is the first time in years i have read any thing except the Bible, that means i do not read Church doctrine, Martin Luther doctrine, Catholic doctrine or that of any professor, maybe i miss something by being that way but i don,t think so.

Apparently our FR Mormons have decided to INGNORE the warning given by that great PROPHET - Brigham Young.

I just read the one on Joesph Smith you gave me and like i said, i am not reading no more because they can Change the circumstances when ever God tells them.

Then you are missing some REALLY good nuggets of info!!

Mr. Millet:

I don't think we can ever transcend Joseph Smith or consider him to be a valued personality, but now we'll move on.
I don't think you'll see that among believers in the faith, because there are too many other things that came from him
that are the reasons why we do what we do and we are what we are. That there are unanswered questions, to be sure.
That there are things that I'm as anxious as the next guy to learn more detail on, I really want to know. But in the interim,
it really doesn't, doesn't trouble me.
We're in the religion-making business, as you intimated earlier, only for a short time, I mean, compared to the
Christian church, which has been at this for a couple of millennia. We're about halfway to Nicaea.
And so, and so in that sense — I remember a very tender moment. I was speaking with — I've been invited
to the Salt Lake Theological Seminary, basically an Evangelical seminary, to discuss a book I had done on Jesus.
And they had read it, and they wanted me to come and just respond to questions.
And it was, it was a very enjoyable couple of hours.

The very last question that was asked by one of my friends there was this one.

He said, 'Bob, what can we do for you?'

And I, I wasn't ready for that question. I said, 'What do you mean?'

He said, 'What can we, as Evangelicals, do for our Mormon friends?'

And I, I guess my mind could have gone a hundred different ways, but what I came back with was this.

I said, 'Boy, I appreciate you asking that. I don't think I've ever been asked that.'

But, but I said, 'Try this. Cut us a little slack, will you? Give us a little time.
We're in the religion-making business, and this takes time. It takes centuries.

And, and trying to explain the faith and articulate the faith, that doesn't come over night.
We've really only been about that for 20 or 30 years.'
