Vatican: Savile's papal honor cannot be removed

The Vatican said Saturday it never would have given Jimmy Savile his papal knighthood had it known of allegations the British TV star was a child sex predator, but that it can't rescind the honor now that he has died.

The Catholic Church of England wrote to the Holy See last week, asking it to consider whether it could posthumously remove the honor awarded to Savile because of the many recent child sex abuse allegations against him. Savile, a much-loved BBC children's television host, died last year at age 84.

The church said its leader, Archbishop of Westminster Vincent Nichols, made the request because the "deep distress" of his alleged victims and in light of public concerns about his name remaining on the papal honors lists.

But the Rev. Federico Lombardi, the Vatican's spokesman, told The Associated Press it couldn't rescind the knighthood awarded to Savile because there simply is no permanent register from which to strike it. The names of people who receive the knighthood don't appear in the Holy See's yearbook and that the honor dies with the individual, Lombardi said.

He also said Savile never would have received the honor had allegations about his behavior been known, and Lombardi stressed the Vatican's firm condemnation of any type of sexual abuse against children.

Savile was made a Knight Commander of St. Gregory the Great by Pope John Paul II in 1990 for his charity work. He was also knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to charity and entertainment.

But police now believe Savile to be one of the most prolific sex offenders in Britain in recent history, with a "staggering number" of people reporting abuses by him after his death.

Some 300 potential victims have come forward ...

God rescinded Saul’s kingship, and the right of inheritance for his family, replacing him with David. Nothing is impossible.

Legalistic BS. They should take ten minutes, write a resolution saying, “stripped of the honor we gave him because he was a fraud and a pervert, and the SOB tricked us”.
Then have the pope sign it, get it notarized and bada bing, it’s DONE!

Who would ever complain?

To everyone: This is because the knighthood dies when the person dies. The same issue is happening with his British Knighthood. The British Government is not going to strip his knighthood because the title died when he died.

That does not stop the media from trying to hit the Catholic Church on this issue.

“The Cadaver Synod (also called the Cadaver Trial or, in Latin, the Synodus Horrenda) is the name commonly given to the posthumous ecclesiastical trial of Catholic Pope Formosus, held in the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome during January of 897.[1]

The trial was conducted by Formosus’s successor, Pope Stephen (VI) VII. Stephen accused Formosus of perjury and of having acceded to the papacy illegally. At the end of the trial, Formosus was pronounced guilty and his papacy retroactively declared null. The Cadaver Synod is fondly remembered as one of the most bizarre episodes in the history of the medieval papacy.”

that’s from Wikipedia.

I am sure that they should be able to remove knighthood from him posthumously. Lance Armstrong is having the same thing happen to him now, and he ain’t dead yet.

Simple formality.

Blessings, bobo

His British and papal knighthoods were bestowed upon him at around age 65. I read that he may have abused as many as 300 kids during his lifetime, or an average of four to five new victims per year, every year, since he hit hit puberty.

Some of the rich and powerful are the biggest Pedophiles around

Note that the UN, for many years, gave money to the North American ManBoy Love Association (NAMBLA). If it wasn’t for late Senator Jesse Helms yanking US money for the UN...the UN-NAMBLA connection would have never been known

This Jimmy SoVile was obviously total scum...and makes Jerry Sandusky look like a rank amateur

One may as well ask why the BBC doesn’t strip him posthumously of his title as host of Jim’ll Fix It or Top of the Pops? Ultimately it is pretty hard to pretend he wasn’t a host of a show when he in fact was, even if one would like to deny having honoured him with such at the time. Likewise, one may not be happy he was given a papal knighthood but he was, and that is that. He does not have such a knighthood now just as he is not now the host of any BBC programs, and that is all for the good.

You're right. The honorary title he received for charitable giving more than 2 decades ago doesn't even exist now: in paper, in fact or in any other way. Post-humously rescinding a non-existing honor is about as empty as it can get.

Unless these fools think somebody in the secret crypts of the Vatican has the magical power to time-travel back 22 years, walk and talk backwards, hit the retroactive "un-friend" button, and then "Poof!" It never happened!

Reparations in a parallel dimension! Demand symbolic satisfaction!
