October 24, 2012 (HLIWorldWatch.org) - In a recent video interview with Catholic News Service, Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia said that the position of the Democrat Party on abortion has gotten worse over time because Catholics within the party havent taken a strong moral stand and shown a willingness to abandon the Democrat Party.
I think many of the Democrats have [taken] Democrat Catholic votes for granted because theyll go with them no matter what the party position might be on abortion, Archbishop Chaput said. Thats why the position of the Democrat Party has gotten worse, and worse, and worse as time goes on because Catholics havent abandoned them as theyve moved in that direction.
Chaput said that in the earliest days of the abortion debate in the United States, most people probably thought that the Republican Party wouldve easily embraced abortion, and that Democrats would have been the political party standing for the defense of life because of the large number of Catholics within the party.
Catholics have been historically part of the Democrat Party in great numbers, and I think really couldve stopped that great development movement if they tried, but they didnt in order to accommodate people from the other side of the issue, he said.
The Archbishop also said that you cant always trust the Republican Party to stand for the defense of life either.
You know you cant trust the Republicans to be pro-life 20 years from now. You cant let any party take your vote for granted, said Chaput.
Archbishop Chaput called on Catholics in the United States to put their Catholic identity ahead of their political party, and even their American citizenship, to stand united with the Churchs moral teaching opposing abortion.
Were Catholics before were Democrats. Were Catholics before were Republicans. Were even Catholics before were Americans because we know that God has a demand on us prior to any government demand on us, he said. And this has been the story of the martyrs through the centuries.
[Abortion] is a very serious issue that requires absolute adherence on the part of Catholics, the Archbishop said, and if we dont stand united on this issue were bound to failurenot only in the area of protecting unborn human life but in maintaining our religious freedom.
Had you posted facts this would have been a different discussion. As I have pointed on on numerous occasions all you have posted are dubious statistics predicated on invalid demographic definitions to support an opinion. That may rise to the level of proof for you because you appear to so very desperately paint the Catholic Church as a political nemesis of conservatism, but it is baseless. I assure you that there are very many staunch conservative Catholics and patriots who lament at the growth of secularism and godlessness in our society and culture. We are not your enemy, we are your brothers and sisters in Christ who differ on certain doctrinal and dogmatic issues, but who worship and love the same God and Savior. The problem is not with those who remain in Communion, or even those who have left the Church to pursue other Christocentric organization, it is with those who have abandoned Jesus in their thoughts and words and what they have done and failed to do. I post in response only to provide the balance begged. Forgive me if I am unable to discern your brilliance.
Peace be with you.
The voting data is universally accepted, and it is important for conservatives to know it, especially when immigration is mostly about importing more catholic voters, it is what the democrat party is counting on.
What is strange, and serves the left, is when even supposedly conservative political activists, keep insisting that none of this exists, and attack in an effort to hide this democrat voting information.
Well, why wouldn’t the Dems take the Catholic vote for granted when no matter what they do Catholics vote for them?
So, duh, STOP IT!
That can't be true. We were just told that Barack Obama was "put into office by a Protestant majority"!
Then again, I've also heard that "one out of three Americans are Catholic", i.e. real Catholics and not including "fat, loud mouthed drunks" nor including those "falsly identifying due to a state of latae sententiae excommunication". One has to wonder how this single biggest conservative voting bloc in the country (if you can believe the claim, that is) failed to keep Obama out of office.
I suspect any substantiating information is locked up inside the head of a fat, loud mouthed drunk, because I've never seen it.

Gasp!

I have no doubts that with your demonstrated internet skills you will continue to find some sketchy polling data and manipulated denominational definitions to support whatever argument you are posing at any given time. However, since Obama, Clinton and LBJ are all protestants whatever obscure point you are trying to make is mute. Forgive me if I do not suspend disbelief and accept the premise of your flawed syllogism.
Pax vobiscum.
'Peace, peace,' they say, when there is no peace.
Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct? No, they have no shame at all;
they do not even know how to blush.

I believe, based on your posts, Vatican = Catholicism. So you did speak for it here:
you should notify the Vatican, they count Nancy Pelosi as Catholic.
How do you know this? Catholic in what sense? In communion with the Bishop of Rome? Or.. ? Your posts indicate a lack of knowledge on what excommunication is and how someone is excommunicated - which I believe is what you count as "kicked out of the Catholic church".
You seemed to want to drop out of that examination of your views before, but, if not..
To examine whether a category is correct, we'd need to agree on a definition for the category. I gave two, what is yours and how does it differ from mine?
No, knowing that Catholic democrat voters are accepted as Catholic is not speaking for the Catholic church in any way, especially a theological way, we all know that the Catholic church has not kicked out the Catholic democrat voters in America, for one thing that would cut the Catholic numbers down by more than 50%, and we know that they haven’t kicked out Pelosi, that would be a major story.
Why waste our time with these senseless type posts?
You don’t believe that these tens of millions of Catholic people have been removed from the Catholic rolls and that Pelosi has been excommunicated do you?
I have repeatedly told you how pollsters define Protestant, read the posts.
spent the afternoon door-belling near the hamden town line in Brookvale section of Cheshire ... Vickie Nardello, first elected in ‘94, NARAL, pro-green, voted yes on Malloy budget and taxes ... 53% in ‘10, looks ripe for defeat this year.
Conservative gal endorsed by CT Family Inst, running strong effort.
Suburbanites still do not connect their local DEM to the overall mess. The John ROwland radio team that dominates WTIC for 13 hours per day ... so focused on Obama-Romney, not doing us any favors by ignoring the CGA-Malloy crowd.
There is no populist unrising in CT because of the focus on the high profile races ... which we will lose in CT. McMahon still not connecting ... what is the GOP thinking? that Romney coattails will drag in state rep candidates?
Mary Fritz of Wlfd running again ... she was one of 15 House DEMS to vote ‘no’ on Malloy budget. (Many of 15 were insincere, of course.)
Who gave the pollsters the authority to define Catholics for anything other than their own commercial purposes? Their definitions are only relevant to those who want to accept them.
And for the record, Nancy Pelosi is indeed excommunicated. But don't fret. I don't expect you to understand that.
Peace be with you
Will you link us to that thread where the Catholic church has excommunicated Nancy Pelosi?
That couldn’t possibly be made up could it?
Yes, you did. And I repeatedly asked you how you would define protestant differently. And, your answer is..?
It is when you speak for the Vatican as you did.
Your posts indicate that, while you are willing to speak for the Vatican, you lack knowledge in what constitutes excommunication.
Tell me which statement that you disagree with me about, where I used the word Vatican.
Again, Huh?
You have been pestering me over and over because you want to know “how you would define protestant differently” from the method that the pollsters currently use when collecting voting data?
If I develop an interest in such a thing, maybe I’ll post on it.
Made up? Like the vain imaginings of a fat, loud mouthed drunk?
"...there's a question about whether this canon'' the relevant church law "was ever intended to be used'' to bring politicians to heel. He thinks not. "I stand with the great majority of American bishops and bishops around the world in saying this canon was never intended to be used this way.''
-- from the thread [Archbishop] Wuerl: Why I Won't Deny Pelosi Communion
Albany Bishop Howard Hubbard says it is "unfair and imprudent" to conclude that Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his girlfriend, Sandra Lee, shouldn't receive Communion simply because they're living together.
-- from the thread Bishop: None of your business (Hubbard rejects Catholic expert's criticism of Gov. Cuomo)
Within the Canon Law are provisions for two kinds of Excommunicaiton, latae sententiae which is automatically incurred at the moment of committing the offense for which canon law imposes that penalty, and ferendae sententiae which incurred only when imposed by a legitimate superior or declared as the sentence of an ecclesiastical court. Most Protestants believe that excommunication is a damnation handed down by an Inquisitor. It is not.
Peace be with you
