MOUNT PLEASANT - It's a long way from Tipperary, Ireland, but John Dominic Crossan has traveled that way to become an expert on the historical Jesus.
Crossan will bring his expertise to Mount Pleasant on Aug. 18 and 19 as scholar in residence at First Presbyterian Church.
Crossan's recent book, "The Power of Parable," will shape the focus of three lectures Aug. 18.
At 2 p.m., he will speak on "Types of Old Testament Parables" and at 3:30 p.m. on "The Challenge Parables by Jesus." The evening lecture, "The Gospels as Parables about Jesus," will begin at 7 p.m.
Crossan will take questions following each lecture and sign copies of his books, which will be available for purchase, from 6 until 6:30 p.m.
On Aug. 19, Crossan will speak during the 9:45 a.m. worship service. Afterward, he will provide an additional presentation and respond to questions.
The scholar in residence weekend includes an art show opening at 1 p.m. Aug. 18.
A box supper will be served at 5 p.m. Aug. 18, with a free will offering taken. Call (319) 986-5851 by Monday to reserve a meal.
At 6:15 p.m. Aug. 18, the Sound Appeal handbell choir will present a short program featuring Jason Edwards, professor of music at Iowa Wesleyan College.
Crossan was born in 1934 in County Tipperary, Ireland. He studied in Ireland, the United States, Rome and Jerusalem.
After nearly two decades as a member of the Roman Catholic religious order the Servites, he joined the faculty of DePaul University, where he now is professor emeritus in the Department of Religious Studies.
Crossan was co-chairman of the Jesus Seminar as it debated the historicity of the life of Jesus in the gospels. He has written 25 books on the historical Jesus, early Christianity and the historical Paul. He has lectured around the world and has appeared on numerous radio and television programs. He serves as president of the Society of Biblical Literature.
The public is invited to participate in the scholar in residence weekend at no charge. However, to attend the Saturday lectures, it is necessary to register at www.faithandreason.org.
First Presbyterian Church is at 902 S. Walnut St. in Mount Pleasant.

Perhaps for the same reason the church of my youth hired a Disciples of Christ minister that said stuff like Crossan. No one asked the right questions about his personal religious beliefs and thought that he is actually a beliver in the Message Of Jesus and our salvation through His ressurection.
i.e. It was a HUGE mistake. The minister just resigned, but officially for a different reason.
Crossan is a heretic. I’ll go farther: he is an agent of Satan, knowing or not. I’d have nothing to do with any church that thought highly of him.
“There are a lot of “religious” documentaries on cable.
Whenever I see this guy’s face, I keep flipping channels. “
AMEN to that! If he is in it, then it’s a hit piece, period. No need to watch it.
He’s a Christian like Judas Iscariot. He should follow his example and go hang himself.
Probably doesn’t need to be said, but part of the leftist PCUSA. The church has 369 members but only 120 bother to show up on an average Sunday. Annual giving about a quarter of a million dollars. (All numbers for 2011.)
Mazol Tov ! They should have wonderful journeyIsn't this the Atheist group ?
