Thanks seekthetruth. Looks like the Lycurgus Effect -- Lycurgus probably never existed, and was (at least in large part) concocted after the fact in the ancient fascist city-state of Sparta. But there are plenty of biographical details about the big 'Mo -- he murdered the Jews of Arabia, he was a pedophile and plagiarist -- that suggest an actual cult leader. That the cult didn't become stylized and have a fixed canon isn't unlike other mass movements. To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list.
