From Cardinal Timothy Dolan's March 2nd, three-page letter to his fellow bishops:
We will continue to accept invitations to meet with and to voice our concerns to anyone of any party, for this is hardly partisan, who is willing to correct the infringements on religious freedom that we are now under. But as we do so, we cannot rely on off the record promises of fixes without deadlines and without assurances of proposals that will concretely address the concerns in a manner that does not conflict with our principles and teaching.
Congress might provide more hope, since thoughtful elected officials have proposed legislation to protect what should be so obvious: religious freedom. Meanwhile, in our recent debate in the senate, our opponents sought to obscure what is really a religious freedom issue by maintaining that abortion inducing drugs and the like are a womans health issue. We will not let this deception stand. Our commitment to seeking legislative remedies remains strong. And it is about remedies to the assault on religious freedom. Period. (By the way, the Church hardly needs to be lectured about health care for women. Thanks mostly to our Sisters, the Church is the largest private provider of health care for women and their babies in the country.) Bishop William Lori, Chairman of our Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty, stated it well in a recent press release: We will build on this base of support as we pursue legislation in the House of Representatives, urge the Administration to change its course on this issue, and explore our legal rights under the Constitution and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
Perhaps the courts offer the most light. In the recent Hosanna-Tabor ruling, the Supreme Court unanimously defended the right of a Church to define its own ministry and services, a dramatic rebuff to the administration, apparently unheeded by the White House. Thus, our bishops conference, many individual religious entities, and other people of good will are working with some top-notch law firms who feel so strongly about this that they will represent us pro-bono. In the upcoming days, you will hear much more about this encouraging and welcome development.
Given this climate, we have to prepare for tough times. Some, like America magazine, want us to cave-in and stop fighting, saying this is simply a policy issue; some want us to close everything down rather than comply (In an excellent article, Cardinal Francis George wrote that the administration apparently wants us to give up for Lent our schools, hospitals, and charitable ministries); some, like Bishop Robert Lynch wisely noted, wonder whether we might have to engage in civil disobedience and risk steep fines; some worry that well have to face a decision between two ethically repugnant choices: subsidizing immoral services or no longer offering insurance coverage, a road none of us wants to travel.
Read the entire letter, available on the USCCB site, in PDF format. For a thorough critique of the faulty views of the cave-in Catholics at America magazine, see the essay, "The Bishops and the Mandate: Principled Witness vs. Politics as Usual", on the Public Discourse site.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan is planning a speech on Long Island, Saturday, March 3 on the recent controversy involving contraceptive coverage in health insurance plans.
The contraception/abortion Catholic attack and Sandr Fluke fluke is a diversionary tactic to draw attention away from the MARXIST takeover of the USA.
Thanks NYer.
We’re right behind you Tim! Tell us where to go and we will follow!
Bishop to King`s 3
That, to me, is the larger issue.
Marxism requires the population to be atheistic. A direct assault on the first ammendment is NOT a diversionary tactic...it is a direct frontal assault.
That, to me, is the larger issue.
Dolan angered me in the first sentence: this assault IS overwhelmingly partisan - except in very rare instances.
Second, stop blaming “the administration.” Most people don’t have a clue of who he talking about. Specifically call out Obama, Sebelius, Pelosi. With these vague words, the MSM would have the country believing the “adminstration” is Sarah Palin or Rush Limbaugh. People are stupid, and the Church had best wake up.
This failure to call a spade a spade is one good reason why the GP cannot get out on a limb with these Bishops. They would cut a deal in a New York minute and abandon their friends.
As a lifelong Catholic, I can say that this entire regulaion would be just desserts for the Church were it not so serious. What did these fools think when they sanxtioned Obamacare? Worse, they planted the seeds of detrucytion by forcing the GOP to go along with the worthless Stupak amendment. John Shaddegg was correct all along.
So Dolan sanctioned Obamacare?
If so, that's all I need to know about him.
Then you will appreciate this article. The author, a physician, provides an excellent analysis and recognized Obama as a marxist.
The HHS Mandate: Cardinal George and the Bishops Are Fighting the Last War
Not Dolan specifically but the Council of Bishops has been peddling every asinine liberal expansion of the welfare state- including universal health care - since the 1960s.
These well-meaning men are like lambs to the slaughter with the likes of Biden, Pelosi, Sebelius among others. I will take the Bishops more seriously when they publicly ex-comunicate these heretics.
Unfortunately, this issue is so serious that we must fight back. But I don’t trust the Bishops not to cut a deal and leave the GOP flappin in the breeze.
Although I get your point, I'm not so sure that people advocating an expansion of socialism are well-meaning.
A desire to remove individual reponsibility contributes toward spiritual rot; I tend to think the real motive of the "do-gooders" is a desire for more power over people.
Anyway, what I'd really like to know is what Dolan's position was on the original Obamacare bill. Was he for it except for the Stupak issue? If I knew, I'd have a better idea how strong his conservatism really is.
Dunno the answer to your specific question. I believe the answer is Yes - supported Obamacare w the worthless Stupak proviso. Remember that Shaddegg was correct at the time in Nov 2009 - if the GOP voted No on Stupak, Pelosi would never been able to get Obamacare thru the House. The Bishops INSISTED that they would “score” the amendment, and that GOP incumbents would suffer the consequences of voting NO. Had they been given a “pass,” then the bill would have died. Just shows how ignorant the Church is relative to major, strategic decisions.
Wasn’t Dolan the guy at Notre Dame who pushed for an honoraree degree for the butcher in the White House?
