Utah's year in religion: Milestones for many faiths [Mormonism]

SALT LAKE CITY -- Two members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints running for President. A hit Broadway musical called "The Book of Mormon." Mormons have held the spotlight this year. But across our state milestones have been marked for many faiths that make up the religious background of Utah.

From politics to arts, many throughout the country dub this "The year of the Mormons." Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney was on the cover of Newsweek in June, his head atop the body of a dancing missionary actor from "The Book of Mormon" Broadway musical, which won 9 Tony Awards. Former Ambassador to China, Jon Huntsman is also a GOP candidate. Newsweek writers, including a Latter-day Saint, say this Church is 'having a moment'.

"It says a lot for Mormonism that it is being discussed in serious national magazines and being lampooned on Broadway. I think it's a good thing for the church, really," said Newsweek writer McKay Coppins.

Workers building the new Brigham City Temple placed an Angel Moroni statue atop a steeple in July, while 5000 from the surrounding area watched with enthusiasm.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir led the festivities celebrating the 100th anniversary of the old Hotel Utah, now the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. President Monson cut the ribbon and thousands shared memories of special family events there.

"How can we become better individuals so that events that are linked to the 9/11 (do) not take place again," said Imam Muhammed Mehtar of the Khadeeja Mosque in West Valley City.

Two Latter-day Saint missionaries, Elders Derek Walker from Fairfield, Idaho and Trevor Strong from Taylorsville, Utah, were hit and killed while riding their bikes in a small Texas town in November. Their companion, Elder Zachery Harris from Huntsville, Alabama was injured.

Time for reflecting upon 2011.

Please submit, by FREEPmail, top recommendations for some of the best religious discussions of 2011...and, of course, if you're a Flying Inman, please suggest some of the top Lds discussions for 2011...[even if the replies' totals didn't reflect it].

For example...given that this KSL.com article mentions Romney as it pertained to his Mormon faith...I picked out four 300-plus replies' articles that posted on FR this year...In fact, here were the top five that focused on Romney's faith...just in measuring sheer FREEPER input, reflected by the reply totals in parentheses...coupled with who submitted them:

* Mitt Romney is a Mormon and I am a Baptist: Get Over It! (Vigilanteman) (381)

* The new, ugly debate about Mitt Romney's Mormon faith will only push him closer to the nomination (Lds poster Ripliancum) (376)

* Tricia Erickson: 'An indoctrinated Mormon should never be elected as President' (Delacoert) (352)

* Author: LDS is 'dangerous religion' (Colofornian) (336)

* Would You Vote for Someone Just Because They're Mormon? (Colofornian) (271)

Please let me know if I missed one or two that focused heavily on religion as I only focused on articles keyworded "Lds" or "Mormon" and haven't reviewed all Romney threads.

2011--the year the mormon church tripled its efforts to appear as a "Christian" faith, with side notes of trumpeting their good works in preparation for Romney condescending to ascend to the US Presidency and fulfill the White Horse Prophecy.

["The time would come when the constitution and government would hang by a brittle thread and would be ready to fall into other hands but this people the latter-day saints will step forth and save it." James Burgess Journal, 1818-1904, Church Archives, vol. 1-found among loose sermons. Also: D. Michael Stewart, "I Have a Question," Ensign, June 1976, 64-65]

If this is successful, instead of the liberals running the country into the ground, the mormon elite will take its place and copy the cronyism, enriching mormon pocketbooks instead of the pocketbooks of present bunch.
