Ok, these are the experiences of my lds friends and family.
This is what I said in post 48, I have no reason to think my lds family and friends are lying to me:
It is interesting Blue. Not every mormon has experienced that tithing bill. My lds friends in southern California, just made a quick reference that their bishop requires that they show their W2s and he sends them a bill each moth based on those W2s. At first I though she was joking and laughed. She wasnt.
I asked my lds uncle (former bishop) and he said in their current ward (also southern California, different area) that is the practice as well.
There are a few former mormons on FR who have posted that they have had similar experiences with billed tithing. Dont remember which ones.
Tithing is between you and God not between you and some guy.
Tithing is a form of worship, not a prerequisite to anything.
What you describe is expressly against how it is supposed to be done. I have NEVER seen or heard of being done in any of the many wards in 3 different countries I’ve been at, and I have no reason believe what you are reporting.
Accountability to God is certainly biblical, and the righteous don’t seem to mind it. But why does it bother you what other people do with their money and what they discuss with their bishop? Very strange obsession.
“their bishop requires that they show their W2s and he sends them a bill each moth based on those W2s.”
Probably the most outrageous statement I have ever read on FR. I have never heard of such a thing and I have been a member of the LDS Church since 2000.
BTW, when I was a Baptist and a Pentecostal, the preachers preached on and on about tithing. In fact, they made it sound like if you weren’t tithing you were headed straight for the eternal fires of hell. Despite their beating us up verbally, however, I always paid my tithe because it’s in the Bible.
I like it that the LDS Church does not pass the plate - ever. This is a sacred trust between me and my Heavenly Father. I tithe because I love Him and His Church and my Savior and the Holy Ghost - not because I have to but because I want to - out of love.
