Journal of Discourses/Vol 2/Spiritual Communication [The OTHER World Series: Lds discourse w/dead]

Who communicated with our...Prophet, and revealed through him as a MEDIUM...Moroni, who had lived upon the earth fourteen hundred years before...

How do the Saints expect the necessary information by which to complete the ministrations for the salvation and exaltation of their friends who have died? By one holding the keys of the oracles of God, AS A MEDIUM THROUGH WHICH THE LIVING CAN HEAR FROM THE DEAD. Shall we, then, deny the principle, the philosophy, the fact of communication between worlds? No! verily no! The spiritual philosophy of the present age was introduced to the modern world by Joseph Smith. The people of the United States abandoned him to martyrdom...simply because a medium of communication with the invisible world had been found, whereby the living could hear from the dead.

...an obscure boy and his few associates, in the western wilds of New York, commenced to hold CONVERSE WITH THE DEAD...ONE OF THE LEADING OR FUNDAMENTAL TRUTHS OF "MORMON" PHILOSOPHY, viz. - "That the living may hear from the dead."...

...we...call attention to the means of discriminating or judging between the lawful and the unlawful mediums or channels of communication...the holy Prophet...remind us that a people should seek unto their God for the living to hear from the dead!

...the Lord...has committed to this Priesthood the keys of holy and divine revelation, and of CORRESPONDENCE, OR COMMUICATION BETWEEN angels, SPIRITS, AND MEN...

...all the most holy CONVERSATIONS AND CORRESPONDENCE WITH God, angels, and SPIRITS, shall be had only in the sanctuary of His holy Temple...

Ye are assembled...and have laid these Corner Stones, for the express purpose that the living might hear from the dead, and that we may prepare a holy sanctuary, where "the people may seek unto their God, for the living to hear from the dead"...

Sermon by Lds "apostle" Parley P. Pratt, April 6, 1853.

Pratt, husbands of a dozen wives, died four years after this for trying to take another already-married woman as wife #13. (Pratt met her while acting as a Mormon missionary in the South; her jealous husband caught up with him and killed him)

Pratt's brother was Lds "apostle" Orson Pratt, direct ancestor of Mitt Romney.

From the sermon: Ye are assembled...and have laid these Corner Stones, for the express purpose that the living might hear from the dead, and that we may prepare a holy sanctuary, where "the people may seek unto their God, for the living to hear from the dead"...

The purpose of the Mormon temple, says Parley Pratt, is that "the living" are to "hear from the dead."

Pratt said that the "spiritual philosophy of the present age" (spiritism had been introduced in the U.S. about five years prior) "was introduced to the modern world by Joseph Smith." And, he claimed, the real reason that Smith was killed was because Smith acted as "a medium of communication with the invisible world, whereby the living could hear from the dead."

Pratt emphasized how "ONE OF THE LEADING OR FUNDAMENTAL TRUTHS OF 'MORMON' PHILOSOPHY, viz. - 'That the living may hear from the dead' commenced thru Smith acting as a "medium."

Though there is no written revelation on this (eisegesis from this Mormon “prophet” – the same Lds “prophet” that issued the “manifesto” to begin halting polygamy said: “The dead are anxious for us to receive ordinances on their behalf…” The Mormon church, in 2004, was “anxious” itself to include this supposed spirit-anxiety going on in the other world. (Teachings of Presidents: Wilford Woodruff, p. 190)

The Mormon temple, therefore, is the “channel” where the dead communicate with the living, so says this Lds “apostle,” Charles Penrose:

"Knowledge that is needful concerning the spiritual sphere will come through an appointed channel and in the appointed place. The temple where the ordinances can be administered for the dead, is the place to hear from the dead. The Priesthood in the flesh, when it is necessary, will receive communications from the priesthood behind the veil." (Lds “apostle” Charles W. Penrose, Mormon Doctrine, 1888, published through the Juvenile Instructor's office, SLC, pp. 40-41)

Hence, Woodruff claimed the signers of the Declaration of Independence appeared to him:
* Lds Temple Haunted? Did Declaration of Independence signers appear as ghosts to leader? [Vanity]
* Eminent Spirits Appeared to Wilford Woodruff [You can read all about some of whom they are alleged to have baptized by proxy here]

For those of you who think, "Well, this was all yesteryear Mormonism," think again:

John Heinerman, in Temple Manifestations, pp. 101-102, Mountain Valley Publishers Manti, Utah, claims these spirits would be smiling -- or sad spirit-faced -- supposedly dependent upon whether they were being necro-baptized or not...The Lds church included this account as factual in their Lesson 34, "Joseph Smith Teaches About Baptism for the Dead" at 2004 Primary Program for children!!! (p. 197)

They teach these same kinds of "anecdotal ghost stories" as formal BYU freshman courses:
In partial answer to the question, let us review a journal entry written by Charles R. Woodbury after he had “witnessed 300 baptisms one day” in the Manti Temple: As a name was called out for baptism, a voice said to me, “This person has had the Gospel taught them and is converted and is ready for baptism.” Another name would be called out, “This person’s never heard the Gospel yet.” Another name would be called, “This person’s heard the Gospel and is not converted.” I sat there in that condition and witnessed 300 baptisms. I knew everyone of them that had accepted it and those that didn’t…25 out of the 300 weren’t ready for it. They weren’t converted and ready for the work. The rest of them, the other 275 were prepared and rejoiced that their work was being done. This is the testimony that I have to show people that the departed spirits know and appreciate when their work is done in the Temple, so they can enjoy the blessings of the Gospel (Woodbury, 1970, p. 19) (Source: p. 57 of http://emp.byui.edu/SatterfieldB/Rel%20261/261text.pdf)

Here is how Mormons incorporate the dead showing up into their Sunday School lessons:

…tried to help his other family members become converted, but they rejected him and the truths he taught. Fred settled in Salt Lake City four years after joining the Church, and he served faithfully as a missionary in several different countries. He also worked as a painter in the Salt Lake Temple. In one of his final journal entries, he wrote: “Along about the 1st of March, 1893, I found myself alone in the dining room, all had gone to bed. I was sitting at the table when to my great surprize my elder brother Alfred walked in and sat down opposite me at the table and smiled. I said to him (he looked so natural): ‘When did you arrive in Utah?’ “He said: ‘I have just come from the Spirit World, this is not my body that you see, it is lying in the tomb. I want to tell you that when you were on your mission you told me many things about the Gospel, and the hereafter, and about the Spirit World being as real and tangible as the earth…I look to you to do the work for me in the temple. … You are watched closely. … We are all looking to you as our head in this great work. (Diary of Frederick William Hurst, comp. Samuel H. and Ida Hurst [1961], 204). OK, I'll nibble, but I won't bite too deeply into your multitude of Mormon Halloween threads. I can see you're having too much fun.

I know you won't agree with the LDS understanding of these biblical references, but it's here it is, for those interested.

Isa 42: 7 to bring out the prisoners from the prison.
Obad. 1: 21 saviours shall come up on mount Zion.
Zech. 9: 11 sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit.
Mal. 4: 6 turn the heart of the fathers to the children.
John 5: 25 dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God.
Rom. 14: 9 Lord both of the dead and living.
1 Cor. 15: 29 what shall they do which are baptized for the dead.
Heb. 11: 40 they without us should not be made perfect.
1 Pet. 3: 19 preached unto the spirits in prison.
1 Pet. 4: 6 gospel preached also to them that are dead.

Happy Halloween. BOO!

Obad. 1: 21 saviours shall come up on mount Zion.

Reference here is to "deliverers" who would "govern" the mtns (Esau)...not become genealogical paper-turned-computer "saviors" who ensure somebody gets splashed on behalf of a person who turned away from Mormonism in their lifetime.

(Sorry...but there were no Mormons back in Obadiah's day)
