Catholic Word of the Day: MOTHER OF GOD, 09-22-11
CatholicReference.net ^ | 09-22-11 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random):

MOTHER OF GOD

Title of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the physical parent of Jesus, who is God. Although first defined against Nestorius at the Council of Ephesus (431), the concept goes back to subapostolic times. The basis in Scripture is the twofold theme of the Gospels, that Jesus was true God and that Mary was truly the mother of Jesus. St. Ignatius of Antioch (d. 107) wrote to the Ephesians: "Our God Jesus Christ was carried in Mary's womb, according to God's plan of salvation." The title of Theotokos (Mother of God) became current after the third century. It was used by Origen (c. 185- c. 254), and St. Gregory Nazianzen, writing about 382, said: "If anyone does not recognize the holy Mary as Mother of God he is separated from the Divinity."

The Nestorian objection that Mary could not be the Mother of God, because she gave birth to the human nature only, was met by Christian apologists who pointed out that not the nature as such but the person was conceived and born. Since Mary conceived him who was the second person incarnate, she is truly the Mother of God.

Consequent on her divine maternity, Mary transcends in dignity all created persons and stands next to her divine Son in holiness. Ancient writers stressed the relation between Mary's divine maternity and her fullness of grace, which they found asserted in the angelic greeting "Hail, full of grace" (kecharitoméne). Her vocation to become the Mother of God, they reasoned, demanded a special richness of divine friendship.

Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and in the
hour of our death. Amen.

Mary is the vessel chosen by God to give birth to His Son Jesus. She is human and is blessed among humans, but she is not the mother of God. That is ludicrous. Roman Cathoicism is deceived. What miracles did Mary do? None.

Mary is the vessel chosen by God to give birth to His Son Jesus.

Isn't that the definition of mother? And doesn't that also make Him her son also?

So, DonkeyBonker (an admirable and elegant name, to be sure), Nestorius has gained another disciple in this the 21st century. Congratulations to you.

Oh, and by the way, before you jump to any conclusions, I’m not Catholic.

Dear DB. Respectfully, I ask that you read John 1:14 and prayerfully consider what the Incarnation means.

You must not be familiar with the Annunciation of the Lord as recorded in Luke 1. You do read Scripture, don't you?

Or the Magnificat prayer of Mary later on in Luke 1

Luke 1

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 And he came to her and said, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!"
29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be.
30 And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.
32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,
33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end."
34 And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?"
35 And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.
36 And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
37 For with God nothing will be impossible."
38 And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.
39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah,
40 and she entered the house of Zechari'ah and greeted Elizabeth.
41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit
42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
43 And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy.
45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord."
46 And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed;
49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts,
52 he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away.
54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,
55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever."
56 And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her home.
57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to be delivered, and she gave birth to a son.
58 And her neighbors and kinsfolk heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.
59 And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they would have named him Zechari'ah after his father,
60 but his mother said, "Not so; he shall be called John."
61 And they said to her, "None of your kindred is called by this name."
62 And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he would have him called.
63 And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, "His name is John." And they all marveled.
64 And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God.
65 And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea;
66 and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, "What then will this child be?" For the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 And his father Zechari'ah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,
68 "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people,
69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David,
70 as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
71 that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us;
72 to perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant,
73 the oath which he swore to our father Abraham,
74 to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear,
75 in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.
76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,
77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins,
78 through the tender mercy of our God, when the day shall dawn upon us from on high
79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace."
80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness till the day of his manifestation to Israel.

Yea, she’s just a surrogate you know. A human incubator.

This matter was settled hundreds of years ago.

Mary gave birth to a PERSON with two natures - human and divine. By your reasoning, you would divide Our Lord into a human person and a divine person, and that’s contrary to Scripture, for “every spirit which confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is of God, and every spirit that dissolveth Jesus, is not of God: and this is Antichrist, of whom you have heard that he cometh, and he is now already in the world” [1 John 4: 2-3].

Why is this always such a point of contention among non-Catholic Christians? Are most not believers in the Trinity? Do they not believe Christ is both God AND man? Unless they believe He was simply God “masquerading” in the form of a man, how can they deny the humanity He received from Mary his mother? And that as such, she IS indeed the Mother of God?

“Mary gave birth to a PERSON with two natures - human and divine. By your reasoning, you would divide Our Lord into a human person and a divine person, and that’s contrary to Scripture ...”

That is a very simple, clear way to put it. Good job.

1 John 4

On Denying the Incarnation

1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

Mary is the vessel chosen by God to give birth to His Son Jesus.

“Isn’t that the definition of mother? And doesn’t that also make Him her son also?”

Yes, but you are confused, she is indeed blessed, but she is not worthy of worship since she is and was human. You don’t worship what was created, you worship the Creator.

And DonkeyBonker is the handle chosen by me as a Democrat basher on this site.

“It’s over some of their heads. Just not seeing it properly.”

Not over my head. I am a born again Christian filled with the Holy Spirit. I am not denying the incarnation, I am denying the Roman Catholic belief that Mary is the mother of God.

That has been conceived, (no pun intended), by man, not inspired by God.

1John4:

2" This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,"

What do you think that Jesus came in the flesh means?

He wanted to have a Mother thus he took his divinity thru the flesh of a woman. He became a baby remember the nativity. He was born of a woman. He is still God as he entered Humanity thru the Woman. He has a mother period whether you like it or not. It was her flesh that he was "clothed" with on earth and heaven. He did this as a witness for all time.

She is the Mother of God because of her birth of a Godman(Jesus) not because she was before God.

He did not make rocks become the dna of the line of David. He chose a human Mother.

Also He has to honor her for all time.

Why?

He was born under the law.

Galatians 4:4 (NKJV)

4 "But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,"

Which has one very special commandment law that he can not refuse or otherwise he is not sinless?

Honor thy Mother and Father !

Otherwise He is not the sinless Lamb.

He has to honor her always! Period!
