Purple robe, bluish jacket? (Question -- vanity.)

I was in Chicago O'Hare today and saw a cleric dressed in a purple monk's robe (it was NOT a scarlet cassock), and he was wearing a bluish jacket, business cut, with a faint purple sheen to it. He also had a gold colored rope that he wore as a belt, and the tasseled ends were almost touching the ground. He didn't look Roman Catholic, or even Episcopalian. Any idea of what he might belong to? PS, I didn't speak with him...

Thanks.

You might just have caught sight of the Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East. Since the persecution of Christians stiffened in Iraq, he's had his cathedral in Chicago. Did it happen to be this fellow?

Not sure about the bluish jacket, but Assyrian clergy sometimes wear jackets over their cassocks.

(The Assyrians broke with the rest of the Church over the Third Ecumenical Council and venerate Nestorius as a saint, hence the rest of Christendom's tendency to characterize them as Nestorian heretics. Before the rise of Islam they had Christianized a great deal of Asia: there were Mongol Hordes with Khans named George and John who were Nestorian Christians, and Nestorian monasteries in China. In one of the tragic might have beens, a Nestorian monk was sent west to propose an alliance between the by-then mostly Buddhist Mongols and the Christians against the Muslims. Alas, he ended up in Paris, very far from the front-lines, rather than Constantinople where his embassy might have done some good, and was regarded as a mere curiosity. Fortunately, given their propensity for applying capital punishment to heretics back in those days, the Latins didn't realize he was a Nestorian.)

Might be Methodist Bishop (especially if the gentleman was black, I’ve seen some pretty “engaging” jackets on “Bishop so and so.”)
