Faith-Based Filmmaking: The Sherwood Pictures Crusade

Albany, Ga., population 76,000, is a three-hour drive south of Atlanta and not the first place in the world you'd expect to find a movie star. But visit the well-kept grounds of Sherwood Baptist Church here on a Sunday, as the congregation's 3,000 members gather to sing and pray, and you're likely to spot a few. There's Tracy Goode, who played coach Brady Owens in the 2006 high-school football epic Facing the Giants; there's Harris Malcom, who played the father of Kirk Cameron's firefighter character in the 2008 drama Fireproof. And if he's not in New York editing a movie, you're almost guaranteed to spot Alex Kendrick, the 40-year-old director and frequent lead actor in the films of Sherwood Pictures...

The Sherwood story began gathering steam in 2003, four years after Alex Kendrick landed at the fast-growing Baptist ministry to handle its media outreach projects. He pitched an idea to pastor Michael Catt: a low-budget film to spread the church's message. Alex and Stephen had written a simple script about a dishonest car salesman (played by Alex) who turns his life around after re-committing himself to God. With $20,000 raised from church members, Alex bought a digital camera, a boom mike and some lights from Home Depot; the cast and crew, made up of 60 church volunteers, filmed in the evenings on donated sets and built dolly tracks out of PVC piping. The film, Flywheel, was completed in a few months. ("Whereas we've improved the production quality in our recent movies," Alex drawls in the DVD introduction to this debut, "we hope you will also be blessed by Flywheel.")

I have seen some of these, and admire the faith behind it as well as the overall quality of the message (as far as it goes) and acting, with few criticisms.

The only movie mentioned here that I have seen is Fireproof. It was good, although just a bit preachy.

As far as recent Christian films go, none can compare with Bella. I bought it on DVD (after I'd seen it in the theatre) and I loan it to friends.

Bella, official trailer

It stars Eduardo Verastigui, a former Mexican soap opera star (a true life "hunk") who gave up his secular pursuits for a life of spreading the Christian message.

An indie film, Bella was sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, among others including Gov. & Mrs. Jeb Bush. It's well worth seeing.

Thanks for the ping and advise. There are very few good movies on these days that Christians can watch. I’m not a prude but I get so tired of being bombarded with sex, language, drugs, and violence. And that’s just from the nightly news.

“indie” film meaning independent?

Yes. Independent. That’s Hollywood/media jargon. LOL.

See #8. You’ll like it, although it is better on the big screen. 2nd choice would be to rent the DVD (if you can do that any more).

This is a contemporary love story with no sex and no violence. And it’s based on a true story.

It won the Toranto Film Festival Viewer’s Choice Award in 2006.

Immortality, erotica, gratuitous violence, profanely using the names of God, coarse language, and usually liberal ideology are obligatory when Hell is your producer.

I highly recommend “Point of the Spear”, the story of missionaries in South American jungle converting an extremely violent tribe of indians.

Stunning movie.

I have seen all of Sherwood's films. They keep getting progressively better, although my favorite (so far) is Facing the Giants.

Courageous, for those who don't know, is going to be about a group of police officers who are pretty good at what they do...but in the role of a father, they've got struggles. After tragedy strikes, one of the cops has a wake-up call about his role as a dad, and he gets his friends, as well as a civilian neighbor, to commit to being the kind of fathers God has called them to be.

The Kendricks keep cranking out fantastic films with a great message. I have no doubt Courageous is going to be even better. I won't be able to go on opening day, but I'm going to see it some time in the first week.

For those who want to see it, here's the TRAILER.

How do they show them for free? I know i will seem extreme, but wonder if it is not like stealing to watch a production for free if the producers require you to pay to see it. I presume the site i listed, and sites like HULU, pay to offer it as part of a revenue generating venture.

That is an excellent question. Apparrently you get a one time viewing foor free and then there is a subscription fee. I’ve been messing with registration and have not succeeded in watching anything. I will cancel this whole service in a few minutes.

When will I ever learn? There is NO FREE LUNCH!
