Well, our church is a cowboy church and we’re having a barn dance on May 21st. So, if the world ends, we’ll go out dancing. Our pastor has an appointment with a Camping follower on May 22nd.

Oh, how I remember fishing trips and fog and the forlorn cry of the loon.

Often when camping.

While listening on my shortwave, I’ve heard Camping’s predictions on this subject. I would describe them as numerologist mumbo-jumbo.

I know this is long but here goes.

I Listened to Camping many years ago when I was a young Christian. He was on WFME which seemed like a very sound biblical station.

He was extremely legalistic and logical. Eventually he started getting into sort of a numerology. It went something like this:

God doesn’t put anything into the bible spuriously. It all must mean something, or why would it be there? So when you hear about 153 fish being pulled up, why thats a strange number, right? Why would the gospel writer count a bunch of fish? So (this part I’m making up, I don’t remember what he said really) 23 is the number of God’s wrath and you take that away from 153 and then you have 130 left, so 13 is the number of the apostles and 10 the number of completions and that means that the apostles will complete God’s wrath in a whatever...

He had many of these. It was all intensely logical and he made it all work out if you listened. In fact, it was striking how logical he made it. Trouble was, he was way off on his hermeneutics and leading others astray.

I was a new Christian and listened with interest, but I did sense he was off. One night on his advice show a woman called up that her husband was beating her. He told her that the Bible says she just had to submit to the beating (”Turn the other cheek”) and she started to cry because she was afraid he would kill her - to which he had no answer. I thought he sounded totally cold.

I also knew no Christian or pastor who understood the bible would have told her that, and realized at that point he was more than a little off - he was out in the Twilight Zone.

I listened only occasionally after that, and he started putting numbers together to figure out the return of Christ. Sadly, back in 1984 I remembering seeing banners about Christ coming in a few days and heard about garage sales where people sold everything they had and gave the money away because they thought the world was ending. He’s caused major damage.

If you listened to him, he sounded like a learned bible teacher until he started to wander into these areas. So people not fully grounded got trampled. I can’t imagine how many people had their faith destroyed by him.

These guys showed up here in Durham (NC) a few months ago, I guess on their The World’s About To End Tour 2011. Five identical new-looking class C motorhomes, each professionally screen-painted with blaring slogans about the end of the world on 5/21/2011 and the URL to Family Radio’s website. That’s a pretty good chunk of change.

I went to their website and tried to understand how he’s coming up with the date. I gave up when I started getting a headache. It’s all numerology and weird interpretations of various numbers of things and days in the Bible, I couldn’t follow it at all.

Harold Camping is a false prophet. He is violating Matthew 24:36, “No man knoweth the day nor the hour...” His actions in repeated date-setting demonstrate his own self-centered theological preoccupations rather than in the glorification of the Lord Jesus Christ....

I remember Harold Camping from 1959 when he taught the book of Romans on Sunday evenings in the small East Bay CRC mission church my family attended. I’ve always had very fond memories of those times, and have sorrowed at the very wrong trajectory he’s taken in the last 35 or 40 years.

When I became a Calvinist he was one of the few at that time that taught reformed doctrine.. over the years he has slipped into an abyss of heresy . It is sad to see..

His teaching that anyone in a church is lost is so non scriptural that we need to be concerned for his eternity .

I learned a great deal from him then, and so I find what follows a very sad story. I pray for him that the Lord will deliver him from the serious errors into which he has fallen.

I started listening to some of Mr. Camping's broadcast in the late 1990s -- I missed the 1994 'fun', but would oft hear references to it from some of his callers into the Open Forum show. I thought it was mean for these callers to 'rub it in', but I also thought it odd, or prideful, that Mr. Camping never repudiated, or openly repented of his earlier mistake (often saying that his book, "1994?", had a question mark on it -- so it was therefore OK for him to have prophesied falsely)...
Then came late 2001 and Mr. Camping came up with his 'End of the Church Age' theory... I then realized that Mr. Camping never repudiated his 1994 error, because he never admitted the error. 1994 wasn't the end of the world -- it was the end of the Church Age... I see....

I haven't listened to him since. I agree with some of the other posters. Sadly he got caught up with his own pride (a stickler for all of us) and numerology.
Pray for him. He means well, he unfortunately got caught up the lure of pride.
