Fundamentalist-evangelical Harold Camping predicts rapture of 200 million on May 21, 2011

By Chaplain Mike

“We learn from the Bible that Holy God plans to rescue about 200 million people (that is about 3% of today’s population). On the first day of the Day of Judgment (May 21, 2011) they will be caught up (raptured) into Heaven because God had great mercy for them. This is why we can be so thankful that God has given us advance notice of Judgment Day. Because God is so merciful, maybe He will have mercy on you.”

I read this on the blog "internetmonk" which is a blog that is very good [and I say that as a Catholic]. The founder of the blog was Baptist-evangelical who was very much devoted to trying to move his church more and more back to embracing Creeds and historic Liturgical worship and Apostolic tradition [I think his wife became Catholic]. Unfortunately, he passed away but his blog continues under the guidance of Chaplain Mike. So I want to say that I find this to be a good blog and my linking it is only because of the article there.

The article I thinked reports that Harold Camping [who I know absolutely nothing about], a former Reformed Christian who founded the non-denominational evangelical "Family Radio ministry" is predicting that on May 21, 2011, that 200 million people [I assume Fundamentalist Rapture type evangelical protestants] will be raptured into heaven.

As a Catholic, I think the Protestant rapture theology is heresy, but I am wondering if any of the various protestants here suscribe to the Family radio's theology and there "sola scriptura" interpretations that led Mr. Camping to make this statement

As one of the articles linked, this seems to be a return to Rev Miller who in the 1800's made similar predictions about the "rapture", which if I remember correctly is when the protestant doctrine or theology of the rapture first started being taught [as it has no basis in the Church Fathers, Creeds or even with the Anglicans and Lutherans of the 16th century].

Any thoughts on this?

And if it doesn't happen, he'll just pick another date, just like he always does.

If it happens on May 21, it will shake up the world. But that’s a no brainer.

Well, I see no reason why we should not live as if tomorrow MAY be the end of the world. We should be like the virgins who trim their wicks in expectation of the Bridegroom.

But keep in mind that the Bible says, “No man knows the day nor the hour thereof.”

Also, note that Camping predicted the end of the world once before, back some time in the 1990s. It didn’t happen.

Yeah, ask him to sign over all his posessions on the 20th, see if he’ll go for it.

The event of the Rapture is detailed in Scripture and therefore is not heresy, but Harold Camping is a lunatic and has been pulling these date-setting stunts for years.

The fact that he goes public with his lunacy every few years, in direct disobedience to the word of God and thus giving the media and non-Christians the opportunity to ridicule and dismiss those who believe God when He tells us that the entire Scripture is "God-breathed" and therefore believe that every word in Scripture is absolutely inerrant and true, makes me question his "Christianity".

LOL - Harold Camping is about as much a "fundamentalist" and an "evangelical" as Catholics are.

I really wish Catholics would bother to take the time to learn something about the things they try to talk about. Unfortunately, a lot of Catholics just don't do the research.

As a Catholic, I think the Protestant rapture theology is heresy...

That's fine. We think much of yours is heresy as well.

Tamar1973:

Like I said, I think the internetmonk blog is one of the best Protestant blogs out there, encourages charitable ecumenical discussions of theology and liturgy and it is usually much more charitable than what you find here at FR.

But when I read thie post about this Camping fellow [again, who I have never heard of], I thought I would post it here and see what the FR protestants here thought as there seem to more Fundamentalist-evangelical types here than over at the internetmonk blog as from what I can tell, the evangelicals over there seem to not be dispensationalist and routinely blasted Rev. Camping or Mr. Camping and his theology and interpretations of scripture, which I found refreshing because it obviously sounded kooky to this Catholic [but of course, so does the whole rapture doctrine and the related theology that goes with it].

Thanks for the response

Family Radio is right down the street from where I work. I was thinking it might be prudent to hit them up for office supplies, extra computers, etc, on May 20.

I am just happy it is a close enough date to say “yes, and?” on May 12.
