In response to many of the “toxic” TV shows targeting women, EWTN is launching a highly-anticipated new program called “The Catholic View for Women,” aimed at addressing issues relevant to today's woman from a Church-based perspective.

The series – with the first show kicking off Friday, March 11 at 6:30 p.m. ET – will be hosted by author and broadcast journalist Teresa Tomeo, Executive Director of Priests for Life Janet Morana and Astrid Bennett Gutierrez, who is the Executive Director of Los Angeles Pregnancy Services and Vice President of Hispanics for Life and Human Rights.

Topics for the first round of shows will include vocations, spirituality, feminism, and the Church’s teaching on contraception, among others.

“The Catholic View for Women” hosts said on the show's website that the primary goal of the series is to “reach fallen away Catholic women” like they used to be and to “show them the beauty of the faith Church teaching and how Jesus is the greatest liberator of women and the greatest source of our dignity.”

Show hosts also said the intent of the program is to reach Catholic women “who have never been exposed to the fullness of the faith because of poor Catechesis” and to “meet women where they are at in their walk with the Lord and the Church.”

The experts said they also hope the series will assist parents “in their efforts to raise their daughters as faith-filled Catholic women” and “offer a positive, relevant, and fun alternative to today’s toxic TV shows targeting women.”

The Catholic View for Women

""In developing the idea for The Catholic View For Women we have established the following goals for our show:

  1. To reach Catholic women in the pews who are cafeteria Catholics, who have never been exposed to the fullness of the faith because of poor Catechesis.

  2. To reach fallen away Catholic women like us and show them the beauty of the faith/Church teaching and how Jesus is the greatest liberator of women and the greatest source of our dignity.

  3. To reach un-churched who have completely fallen away from the faith.

  4. To encourage today’s faithful Catholic women that they can be in the world and not of the world.

  5. To meet women where they are at in their walk with the Lord and the Church.

  6. To help parents in their efforts to raise their daughters as faith-filled Catholic women.

  7. To offer a positive, relevant, and fun alternative to today’s toxic TV shows targeting women.

The six pilot episodes will air at 3am and 6:30pm ET on the following days in 2011:

Show 1: Friday, March 11: Introduction to The Catholic View for Women

Show 2: Friday, April 8: Finding Your Own Catholic Identity/Vocation

Show 3: Friday, May 13: Radical Feminism vs. New Feminism

Show 4: Friday, June 10: Extreme Makeover: Seeing Yourself through the Eyes of Christ

Show 5: Friday, July 8: Contraception Deception

Show 6: Friday, August 12: Women and the Church through the Centuries""

This sounds like an excellent idea.

That said, I hope they're thinking of a new name... I'd not be surprised if they are sued by ABC for having "The...View" in the name, especially given that it's a women's show.

I am not a lawyer, but I don’t think that we can copyright titles, especially one as generic as “The View.” If you or I want to put on a show called “Friends” or “Cheers,” we can certainly do so.

But will it be hosted by fat, ugly, and drunk women?

To be fair, I'm no lawyer either. However, it seems to me that this isn't a matter of copyright, but rather one of trademark. I suspect ABC could make a case that a television show that is a talk show for women and contains the word "View" in the title would be in violation of their trademark. Whether they would succeed is a matter to be seen.

If you or I want to put on a show called “Friends” or “Cheers,” we can certainly do so.

Were it a sit-com, and you used the single-word titles, I likewise suspect you would be sued. If it weren't a sit-com, or contained other words in the title, there's a less likely chance of it.
