(edited for excerpt).............................................Prothero was speaking on Friday at the 11th annual Mormon Studies Conference .
-SNIP-
Prothero said the traditional story of Mormonism is that it was reviled until it renounced plural marriage in the 1890s. After that, it was relatively smooth sailing to acceptance. "Today the Mormons are quintessentially American more American than I am, perhaps, given my residence in the irredeemably liberal state of Massachusetts," Prothero said to laughter. "Mormons are seen through much of America with the exception of Boston, Cambridge and San Francisco as a model minority."
He said that some even say that Mormonism is the quintessential American religion.
"Islam has not fared nearly as well in the American imagination," he said. "When you think of Mormons today, you think of Mitt Romney, Harry Reid and Donny and Marie. When you think of Muslims, you think of Osama bin Laden."
-SNIP-
But have the Mormons remembered their own persecution and their own status in public opinion? Prothero doesn't think so.
"I immediately thought that my former governor, Mitt Romney, might distinguish himself from other Republicans by speaking out for religious freedom."
-SNIP-
Instead, a Romney spokesperson issued a statement saying that Romney opposed the construction of the mosque.

Prothero said. "I believe that members of a religious group that has been persecuted almost to extinction should stand up and speak out."
-SNIP-
Why aren't more Mormons speaking out?
"I think these Mormon Republican people in power are more Republicans than they are Mormons," Prothero said. "If they took the time to see themselves as at least as Mormon as they are Republican they would do the right thing. They are more faithful to their Republican politics than they are to their Mormon faith."

suicide pact?
Mormons should no more support a Ground Zero mosque than they should support Boeing building a shiny new office building overlooking the Hiroshima Bomb Dome, or a cavalry reunion right outside the reservation that contains Wounded Knee.
And that, of course, goes for the people of every other religion.

Wow, this article has more snips for editing than a Sarah Palin/Katie Couric interview!
Well stated and I agree. I can see why you double posted it.
Given the LDS’ willful treason recently in forcing through Utah’s illegal alien amnesty bill, nothing would surprise me about this bunch. Just disgusted with them and their unholy alliance with the Chamber to shove that down Utahns’ throats.
Bain Capital, has cut checks totaling $90,000 to Romneys operation.
You mean the wildly unpopular, rushed bill. And it’s not amnesty, it allows for work visas, if the Fed Gov approves them. Still many Utahn’s are extremely angry, because there should be no amnesty whatsoever.
And while you’re ranting, remember that a Latter-day Saint wrote Arizona’s wildly popular anti-immigration bill. But you won’t hear much about that either, because this thread meant to be a hit job, just like they always tend to be. It’s inconsequential though, in the big picture.

No I dont
I think of Joey Smith and Briggie Young ...
and Orrin Porter Rockwell and Bill Hickman...
and the Mountain Meadows Massacre...
Agreed. And the fact that this Bostonian liberal “scholar” is not a Latter-day Saint, signifies that this article means nothing, except a liberal has an opinion that he can influence a whole church’s opinion to a wildly unpopular action, simply because they were abused in the past, and he want’s a simpathy cause, like “hate crimes.”
Then again, you’d know that by the origin of the thread.
One should really read the entire article at the link for insight into why this speaker thinks otherwise. He stated that Senator Hatch supported the mosque and "community center".
Also, there have been several articles posted regarding the ongoing ties between mormons and muslims.

The other September 11th.
That's why reading the article at the source is suggested. Some interesting stuff had to be left out in order to adhere to posting rules.
Arizona does not have an anti-immigration law.
You do get that this is an lds news paper right?

Did he mean Jews?
