Chapter XIV

Of Saving Faith

I. The grace of faith, whereby the elect are enabled to believe to the saving of their souls,[1] is the work of the Spirit of Christ in their hearts,[2] and is ordinarily wrought by the ministry of the Word,[3] by which also, and by the administration of the sacraments, and prayer, it is increased and strengthened.[4]

II. By this faith, a Christian believes to be true whatsoever is revealed in the Word, for the authority of God Himself speaking therein;[5] and acts differently upon that which each particular passage thereof contains; yielding obedience to the commands,[6] trembling at the threatenings,[7] and embracing the promises of God for this life, and that which is to come.[8] But the principal acts of saving faith are accepting, receiving, and resting upon Christ alone for justification, sanctification, and eternal life, by virtue of the covenant of grace.[9]

III. This faith is different in degrees, weak or strong;[10] may often and many ways assailed, and weakened, but gets the victory:[11] growing up in many to the attainment of a full assurance, through Christ,[12] who is both the author and finisher of our faith.[13]

ROM 4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also. LUK 17:5 And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith. ROM 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

[5] JOH 4:42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world. 1TH 2:13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. 1JO 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. ACT 24:14 But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets.

[6] ROM 16:26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith.

[7] ISA 66:2 For all those things hath mine hand made, and those things have been, saith the Lord: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

[8] HEB 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 1TI 4:8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

[9] JOH 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. ACT 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. GAL 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. ACT 15:11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

[10] HEB 5:13,14 For every one that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness; for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. ROM. 4:19-20 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, heither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb. He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God. MATT 6:30 Shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? MATT 8:10 When Jesus heard it, he marveled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

[11] LUKE 22:31-32; And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Stan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat; but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not; and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. EPH 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. I John 5:4-5 For whatsoever is born of God, overcometh the world; and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

[12] HEB 6:11-12 And we desire that every one of you do show the same dilligence, to the full assurance of hope unto the end; that ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Heb. 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

Pity they didn’t look closer at the scriptures.

“The grace of faith, whereby the elect are enabled to believe to the saving of their souls,[1]” is justified by “[1] HEB 10:39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.”

Or as the passage reads in the ESV:

32But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, 33sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. 34For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. 35Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. 37For,

“Yet a little while,
and the coming one will come and will not delay;
38 but my righteous one shall live by faith,
and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”

39But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

The writer speaks to those who have believed, and encourages them to press on to the goal: “For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised.”

There is certainly nothing in that passage of God giving faith to his elect while denying it to everyone else.

“is the work of the Spirit of Christ in their hearts,[2]” is justified with:

EPH 1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: 18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, 19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power.

2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.

2CO 4:13 reads, in context:

5For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

7But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 8We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12So death is at work in us, but life in you.

13Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, 14knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. 15For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

Please note there is nothing in there about God giving faith to some, and denying it to others. In preaching the Gospel, they rely on the power of God in proclaiming it: “We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.”

As he wrote a few verses earlier, “We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.”

Ephesians 1:17 reads:

15For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, 16I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Again, note there is nothing about God giving faith to some and denying it to others, only that he wants the believers to understand “the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe...”

Not “to those he chose by name before the world began”, but “toward us who believe”. Again, the onus is on us to believe, not for Him to give belief to us as a gift after first giving us life.

And of course, Ephesians 2:8 looks different in English than in the Greek, since the Greek makes it clear that the gift is NOT faith, but salvation.

Sometimes the Roman roots the Reformed Churches is obvious. I don't see any reference to Sacraments increasing ones faith as footnoted in #4. I do see turning to God in prayer.

I would agree. I believe it is the word of God that increases one's faith and that is it alone. The sacraments are a outward demonstration of our faith.

BTW-We have been having personal testimonies at church. Testimony after testimony people will say, "This particular scripture talked to me and convicted me..." I thought if we actually understood the power of the scriptures, we would be spending time in sermons talking about current events.

Testimony after testimony people will say, "This particular scripture talked to me and convicted me..."

This is fantastic. We live in such a scientific age that people can't believe just reading Scripture can lead to a transformation in someone's life. The power of the Holy Spirit is to easily dismissed.

BTW, I would agree that the Westminster Confession is the best attempt to establish a systematic theology based on Scripture. It doesn't mean it's perfect, but what a great starting point.

I thought about posting the Baptist Confession of Faith, but there is a certain elegance in the Westminster that I like. I have some issues with certain passages, especially over church issues where the scripture references become rather thin. However, it is a solid understanding of the scripture.

I would suggest you get a copy of John MacArthur's excellent commentary on Hebrews. Hebrews is a book that must be read from the beginning to end. It is often completely misunderstood and quoted totally out of context with its intended purpose.

The book of Hebrews is an evangelistic message written to unconverted Jews who the writer was trying to lead to Christ. (Leave it to God to put an evangelistic call to the Jews in scripture.) The people who the writer is addressing his letter to are not people who "believed" but were close to believing. One might say they are the ones in Acts who said, "We will hear later."

John MacArthur's commentary is too lengthy (and is copyrighted) to be printed here. But here is a small excerpt from the commentary on the passage you cite:

These are people who, once enlightened, will never come to a saving faith in Christ.

There is certainly nothing in that passage of God giving faith to his elect

We've been around the block on this one before. Unless YOU want to claim that you generate your own faith, then it cannot be denied that God gives faith. The scriptures tell us that not all have faith, faith is given in measure and faith comes to us by hearing the word of God. So if God gives faith, then you are left with the inevitable conclusion that those who don't have faith, simply don't have it because God didn't give it to them.
