PREACHING THE GOSPEL IN THE SPIRIT WORLD: What Did Peter Really Teach?

“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water”

“For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.”

The LDS church has long taught that all people who died without opportunity to receive the Mormon gospel will receive that option in the spirit world after death. Mormons believe an elaborate missionary system is operating in the spirit world between men’s death and their resurrection. The LDS doctrine of salvation for the dead is canonized in Doctrine and Covenants 138, which details a purported vision received by Joseph F. Smith, sixth LDS church president, on October 3, 1918.

Section 138 reads in part: “While this vast multitude [of disembodied spirits] waited and conversed, rejoicing in the hour of their deliverance from the chains of death, the Son of God appeared, declaring liberty to the captives who had been faithful; and there he preached to them the everlasting gospel, the doctrine of the resurrection and the redemption of mankind from the fall, and from individual sins on conditions of repentance. But unto the wicked he did not go, and among the ungodly and the unrepentant who had defiled themselves while in the flesh, his voice was not raised; neither did the rebellious who rejected the testimonies and the warnings of the ancient prophets behold his presence, nor look upon his face” (vv. 18–21, italics added).

Gospel Principles, a student and teacher resource published by the LDS church, illustrates the sentimental aspect of Mormonism’s doctrine of salvation for the dead. One story is found in the section relating to temple work and family history. “Mario Cannamela married Maria Vitta in 1882,” the tale begins. “They lived in Tripani, Italy, where they raised a family and shared many wonderful years together. Mario and Maria did not hear the message of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ [Mormonism] during their lifetimes. They were not baptized [into the Mormon church]. They did not have the opportunity to go to the temple and be sealed together as an eternal family. At death, their marriage ended.

“Over a century later a great reunion took place. Descendants of Mario and Maria went to the Los Angeles Temple, where a great-grandson and his wife knelt at an altar and served as proxies for the sealing [Mormon temple marriage] of Mario and Maria . . .

“Many of our ancestors are among those who died without hearing about the [Mormon] gospel while on the earth. They now live in the spirit world (see chapter 41 in this book). There they are taught the [Mormon] gospel of Jesus Christ. Those who have accepted [that] gospel are waiting for the temple ordinances to be performed for them . . . ” (1997, p. 257).

The Bible emphatically denies the Mormon gospel is proclaimed to righteous or unrighteous disembodied spirits. When examined in context of all scripture, 1 Peter 3:18 teaches no such thing. So let’s be clear on five important doctrinal points:

1. The Savior Didn’t Establish a Spirit-World Missionary System. Describing Christ’s activities between the Crucifixion and Resurrection, Peter explained that Jesus “went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared” (1 Peter 3:19, 20). The chief apostle said nothing about Jesus preaching the gospel to disembodied spirits—righteous or otherwise—who lacked opportunity to receive Mormonism in mortality. If Christ had done, as Joseph F. Smith claimed, Peter would have said so. He didn’t. So what did Christ proclaim to the disobedient spirits of Noah’s day?

Peter didn’t elaborate, but the New Testament offers sound suggestions. First, Jesus undoubtedly proclaimed ultimate victory as the Son of God and the long-awaited Messiah. His proclamation to the disobedient spirits of Noah’s day perhaps resembled his declaration to the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. Jesus assured her that he’s the Messiah who gives life and declares all things (John 4:25, 26). Second, Jesus surely proclaimed his forthcoming resurrection, which would guarantee that all mankind will physically rise from the dead (John 5:28, 29; Acts 24:15). During one of the Bible’s most astounding miracles, Christ announced, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die” (John 11:25, 26). This message is central to any proclamation involving Christ. And third, in all likelihood, Jesus confirmed that he’s God revealed in the flesh (1 Timothy 3:16 KJV), He may have taught that, had they repented while living in the flesh, the disobedience spirits of Noah’s day would have received forgiveness of sins (see Matthew 9:5, 6).

2. The Dead Can’t Hope to Receive Christ. The doctrine of departed spirits receiving the gospel might be unique to Latter-day Saints. Mormons teach that those who die without opportunity to receive their version of the gospel, but would have received it had they lived, will inherit the highest kingdom of heaven. Joseph Smith, founding president of the LDS church, claimed, “ . . . All who have died without a knowledge of this gospel, who would have received it if they had been permitted to tarry, shall be heirs of the celestial kingdom of God; also all that shall die henceforth without a knowledge of it, who would have received it with all their hearts, shall be heirs of that kingdom” (Doctrine and Covenants 137:7, 8).

But the Bible teaches a dramatically different doctrine, namely, that the dead do not have an opportunity to repent. At mortal death, everyone’s fate is sealed. In support of this tenet, David said of the Lord, “For there is no mention of You in death; in Sheol who will give You thanks?” (Psalm 6:5). David also asked God rhetorically, “Will You perform wonders for the dead? Will the departed spirits rise and praise You? Selah. Will Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave, Your faithfulness in Abaddon? Will Your wonders be made known in the darkness? And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?” (Psalm 88:10–12). The obvious answer is no. Similarly, Isaiah taught, “Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for [God’s] faithfulness” (Isaiah 38:18).

3. Today is the Day of Salvation. Few apostles were better versed in Christian doctrine than Paul was. In a day that lacked concordances and computer-based keyword searches, he masterfully quoted and applied scripture. And if there was one teaching Paul knew, it’s that mortal life is the only time to receive the Savior. At one point, Paul told believers, “We . . . urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain—for He says, ‘At the acceptable time I listened to you, and on the day of salvation I helped you.’ Behold, now is ‘the acceptable time,’ behold, now is ‘the day of salvation’” (2 Corinthians 6:1, 2). The Letter to the Hebrews is equally adamant that today is the day of salvation, that there’s no opportunity to receive Christ in the spirit world. Chapter 3 verses 7–14 prove beyond question that God has granted us repentance only during our current lifetime.

Even the Book of Mormon, which Joseph Smith alleged is “the most correct book on earth, and that a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts than by any other book” (History of the Church 4:461), teaches that man cannot repent in the next life. For example, Alma 34:32 reads, “For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors” (italics added). Verse 34 of the same chapter emphasizes, “That same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world.”

4. Joseph F. Smith Misidentified Christ’s Audience. When explaining how Jesus “made proclamation to the spirits now in prison” (1 Peter 3:19 NASB), Peter clearly identified the recipients of Christ’s message. The Lord addressed only the disobedient spirits of Noah’s day (v. 20). But in total contradiction, Joseph F. Smith claimed Christ did not minister to the disobedient. Instead, Smith alleged, the Lord organized a missionary system in the spirit world, and its principal messengers were allegedly prophets from the eastern and western hemispheres (Doctrine and Covenants 138:30–32). When comparing 1 Peter 3:18–20 to Doctrine and Covenants 138:20–32, the incongruity is remarkable. Peter said nothing about a spirit-world missionary system, nor did he mention Jesus preaching to righteous spirits between the Crucifixion and Resurrection. There’s no question, then, that Peter is more credible than Joseph F. Smith is. Those who truly love Christ believe the Bible, not the distinctive teachings of Mormonism. Recall that Isaiah warned, “To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them” (Isaiah 8:20 NKJV).

5. Who Are “the Dead” in 1 Peter 4:6? When promoting their notions of salvation for the dead, Mormons want you to believe “the dead” cited in 1 Peter 4:6 are departed spirits ready to receive the LDS gospel in the spirit world. When chapters 3 and 4 of 1 Peter are studied thoroughly, however, a different message unfolds. The context is judgment, not a spirit-world missionary system. In fact, beginning with verse 1, Peter urged readers to prepare for godly suffering and to live for God rather than fleshly lusts. He then said Christians have moved beyond sins of the flesh, but that non-Christians will be accountable to God for their unbelief. Establishing that foundation, Peter referred to believers who had lived on earth and then died: “For the gospel has for this purpose been preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God”

Various interpretations have been offered for 1 Peter 4:6. For example, one view says “the dead” Peter references are the spiritually dead. Another and perhaps more viable interpretation comes from Pastor and Bible scholar John MacArthur. He explains: “The preaching of the gospel not only offers a rich life (3:10), a ceasing from sin (v. 1), and a good conscience (3:21), but also an escape from final judgment. Peter had in mind believers who had heard and accepted the gospel of Christ when they were still alive, but who had died by the time Peter wrote this letter. Some of them, perhaps, had been martyred for their faith. Though these were dead physically, they were triumphantly alive in their spirits (cf. Heb. 12:23). All their judgment had been fully accomplished while they were alive in this world (“in the flesh”), so they will live forever in God’s presence” (The MacArthur Study Bible, New American Standard Bible, Updated Edition, 2006, p. 1916).

As always, God has the final word, and that word is revealed exclusively through the Bible. In the gospel of Jesus Christ, the theories of men don’t benefit the salvation of man (Matthew 15:7–9; Colossians 2:20–23; Titus 1:14). Furthermore, we need not worry about people who die without hearing the gospel. All that the Father has given to Christ will come to him, and nobody belonging to Christ will be lost (John 6:37, 39; 17:2, 24). Paul removed all doubt that God the members of Christ’s church. The apostle wrote, “But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired” (1 Corinthians 12:18, italics added).

If you peruse the Free Republic religion forums you will notice a pattern. There’s an anti-Mormon [former mormons who left the cult and now are Christians] group of people here that spends [devotes] a great deal of their time attacking [revealing the truth they learned about] the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints [the cult known commonly as “mormons”]. They post regurgitated propaganda [From our own mormon church official sources! When they do it, it’s propaganda. When I do it, it is official doctrine.] on an almost daily basis [actually, they do it throughout the day - that’s how much they care!].

They have a misguided obsession [understand that as I write this, I am wearing magic mormon underwear, which can be tight and tend to ride up into the crotch, so pardon my frustrations with this]. You can witness many different tactics employed that you might find quite interesting. The straw man argument [used primarily by myself and other mormons] is a big favorite and is frequently preceded by cherry-picking quotes or other material [mormons like to cherry pick from the Bible in order to appear Christian, but it’s OK when we do it!]. After the “quotation” the [mormon] attacker will misrepresent what has been said or what was meant and then attack their own interpretation.

Another favorite is posting scripture or statements which on their own really present no dilemma. They make something out of nothing [of course, I acknowledge mormonism is made up out of whole cloth and pretty crazy! Really, where can you find millions of gods in the Bible?!!] while never bringing up a single objection that hasn’t been addressed a hundred times before [of course we claim to “address it” - we can’t claim we actually answered it, since we have no facts, evidence or logic to back us up. We “address it”].

Sometimes they cruise the headlines of the day [I know this because I have X-Ray vision and can see into their homes. I watch them all, closely, vigilantly and stalk their computers] seeking any story that might be twisted into making the Church [by “Church” I mean the cult, but Church sounds more mainstream] look bad. Anything will do, just watch the progression of posts following it and see what I mean [dang, my magic underwear is getting a bit tight-sorry].

After reading their posts, I invite you to seek the truth about whatever “issue” they seem to be “revealing” or “exposing”. I promise that if you do so with honest intent, the “ahah” moments you will have will be many and frequent [many, for instance, say, “AHAH! Now I understand why those former mormons want to spread the truth of mormonism! What a wacked out religion!”]. You will start to recognize the tactics employed [by mormons] to cleverly twist and attack and will likely chuckle the more you see [I chuckle quite a bit as I fail to ever answer a question! Heh, heh!]. In actuality, there’s nothing new here. It’s all been addressed [but of course, not answered] many times before.

41 And as ye have asked concerning adultery, verily, verily, I say unto you, if a man ^areceiveth a wife in the new and everlasting covenant, and if she be with another man, and I have not appointed unto her by the holy ^banointing, she hath committed ^cadultery and shall be destroyed.

42 If she be not in the new and everlasting covenant, and she be with another man, she has ^acommitted adultery.

43 And if her husband be with another woman, and he was under a ^avow, he hath broken his vow and hath committed adultery.

44 And if she hath not committed adultery, but is innocent and hath not broken her vow, and she knoweth it, and I reveal it unto you, my servant Joseph, then shall you have power, by the power of my Holy Priesthood, to take her and ^agive her unto him that hath not committed ^badultery but hath been ^cfaithful; for he shall be made ruler over many.

45 For I have conferred upon you the ^akeys and power of the priesthood, wherein I ^brestore all things, and make known unto you all things in due time.

46 And verily, verily, I say unto you, that whatsoever you ^aseal on earth shall be sealed in heaven; and whatsoever you ^bbind on earth, in my name and by my word, saith the Lord, it shall be eternally bound in the heavens; and whosesoever sins you ^cremit on earth shall be remitted eternally in the heavens; and whosesoever sins you retain on earth shall be retained in heaven.

47 And again, verily I say, whomsoever you bless I will bless, and whomsoever you curse I will ^acurse, saith the Lord; for I, the Lord, am thy God.

48 And again, verily I say unto you, my servant Joseph, that whatsoever you give on earth, and to whomsoever you ^agive any one on earth, by my word and according to my law, it shall be visited with blessings and not cursings, and with my power, saith the Lord, and shall be without condemnation on earth and in heaven.

49 For I am the Lord thy God, and will be ^awith thee even unto the ^bend of the world, and through all eternity; for verily I ^cseal upon you your ^dexaltation, and prepare a throne for you in the kingdom of my Father, with Abraham your ^efather.

50 Behold, I have seen your ^asacrifices, and will forgive all your sins; I have seen your ^bsacrifices in obedience to that which I have told you. Go, therefore, and I make a way for your escape, as I ^caccepted the offering of Abraham of his son Isaac.

51 Verily, I say unto you: A commandment I give unto mine handmaid, Emma Smith, your wife, whom I have given unto you, that she stay herself and partake not of that which I commanded you to offer unto her; for I did it, saith the Lord, to ^aprove you all, as I did Abraham, and that I might require an offering at your hand, by covenant and sacrifice.

52 And let mine handmaid, Emma Smith, ^areceive all those that have been given unto my servant Joseph, and who are virtuous and pure before me; and those who are not pure, and have said they were pure, shall be destroyed, saith the Lord God.

53 For I am the Lord thy God, and ye shall obey my voice; and I give unto my servant Joseph that he shall be made ruler over many things; for he hath been ^afaithful over a few things, and from henceforth I will strengthen him.

54 And I command mine handmaid, Emma Smith, to abide and ^acleave unto my servant Joseph, and to none else. But if she will not abide this commandment she shall be ^bdestroyed, saith the Lord; for I am the Lord thy God, and will destroy her if she abide not in my law.

55 But if she will not abide this commandment, then shall my servant Joseph do all things for her, even as he hath said; and I will bless him and multiply him and give unto him an ^ahundredfold in this world, of fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, houses and lands, wives and children, and crowns of ^beternal lives in the eternal worlds.

56 And again, verily I say, let mine handmaid ^aforgive my servant Joseph his trespasses; and then shall she be forgiven her trespasses, wherein she has trespassed against me; and I, the Lord thy God, will bless her, and multiply her, and make her heart to ^brejoice.

57 And again, I say, let not my servant Joseph put his property out of his hands, lest an enemy come and destroy him; for ^aSatan ^bseeketh to destroy; for I am the Lord thy God, and he is my servant; and behold, and lo, I am with him, as I was with Abraham, thy father, even unto his ^cexaltation and glory.

58 Now, as touching the law of the ^apriesthood, there are many things pertaining thereunto.

59 Verily, if a man be called of my Father, as was ^aAaron, by mine own voice, and by the voice of him that ^bsent me, and I have endowed him with the ^ckeys of the power of this priesthood, if he do anything in my name, and according to my law and by my word, he will not commit ^dsin, and I will justify him.

60 Let no one, therefore, set on my servant Joseph; for I will justify him; for he shall do the sacrifice which I require at his hands for his transgressions, saith the Lord your God.

61 And again, as pertaining to the law of the priesthood—if any man espouse a virgin, and desire to espouse ^aanother, and the first give her consent, and if he espouse the second, and they are virgins, and have vowed to no other man, then is he justified; he cannot commit adultery for they are given unto him; for he cannot commit adultery with that that belongeth unto him and to no one else.

62 And if he have ^aten virgins given unto him by this law, he cannot commit adultery, for they belong to him, and they are given unto him; therefore is he justified.

63 But if one or either of the ten virgins, after she is espoused, shall be with another man, she has committed adultery, and shall be destroyed; for they are given unto him to ^amultiply and replenish the earth, according to my commandment, and to fulfil the promise which was given by my Father before the foundation of the world, and for their exaltation in the eternal worlds, that they may bear the souls of men; for herein is the work of my Father continued, that he may be ^bglorified.

64 And again, verily, verily, I say unto you, if any man have a wife, who holds the keys of this power, and he teaches unto her the law of my priesthood, as pertaining to these things, then shall she believe and administer unto him, or she shall be destroyed, saith the Lord your God; for I will destroy her; for I will magnify my name upon all those who receive and abide in my law.

65 Therefore, it shall be lawful in me, if she receive not this law, for him to receive all things whatsoever I, the Lord his God, will give unto him, because she did not believe and administer unto him according to my word; and she then becomes the transgressor; and he is exempt from the law of Sarah, who administered unto Abraham according to the law when I commanded Abraham to take ^aHagar to wife.

66 And now, as pertaining to this law, verily, verily, I say unto you, I will reveal more unto you, hereafter; therefore, let this suffice for the present. Behold, I am Alpha and Omega. Amen.

"Now the way he translated was he put the urim and thummim into his hat and Darkned his Eyes than he would take a sentance and it would apper in Brite Roman Letters. Then he would tell the writer and he would write it. Then that would go away the next sentance would Come and so on. But if it was not Spelt rite it would not go away till it was rite, so we see it was marvelous. Thus was the hol [whole] translated."

In an 1885 interview, Zenas H. Gurley, then the editor of the RLDS Saints Herald, asked Whitmer if Joseph had used his "Peep stone" to do the translation. Whitmer replied:

"... he used a stone called a "Seers stone," the "Interpreters" having been taken away from him because of transgression. The "Interpreters" were taken from Joseph after he allowed Martin Harris to carry away the 116 pages of Ms [manuscript] of the Book of Mormon as a punishment, but he was allowed to go on and translate by use of a "Seers stone" which he had, and which he placed in a hat into which he buried his face, stating to me and others that the original character appeared upon parchment and under it the translation in English."

"Martin Harris related an incident that occurred during the time that he wrote that portion of the translation of the Book of Mormon which he was favored to write direct from the mouth of the Prophet Joseph Smith. He said that the Prophet possessed a seer stone, by which he was enabled to translate as well as from the Urim and Thummim, and for convenience he then used the seer stone, Martin explained the translation as follows: By aid of the seer stone, sentences would appear and were read by the Prophet and written by Martin and when finished he would say 'Written,' and if correctly written that sentence would disappear and another appear in its place, but if not written correctly it remained until corrected, so that the translation was just as it was engraven on the plates, precisely in the language then used."

In 1879, Michael Morse, Emma Smith's brother-in-law, stated:

"When Joseph was translating the Book of Mormon [I] had occasion more than once to go into his immediate presence, and saw him engaged at his work of translation. The mode of procedure consisted in Joseph's placing the Seer Stone in the crown of a hat, then putting his face into the hat, so as to entirely cover his face, resting his elbows upon his knees, and then dictating word after word, while the scribes Emma, John Whitmer, O. Cowdery, or some other wrote it down."

Joseph Smith's brother William also testified to the "face in the hat" version:

"The manner in which this was done was by looking into the Urim and Thummim, which was placed in a hat to exclude the light, (the plates lying near by covered up), and reading off the translation, which appeared in the stone by the power of God"
