A new survey shows that most sympathizers of the U.S. Tea Party movement are Christian conservatives.
The American Values Survey, conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute, revealed that there was considerable common ground shared by the largely Republican Tea Party and Christian conservatives, Reuters reported.
According to Reuters, this faction has long wielded sizeable influence on American politics.
Robert Jones, CEO of PRRI said, [The] American Values Survey found significant overlap between the Tea Party and the Christian conservative movement, according to GateHouse News Service.
Jones also said the findings challenge conventional views concerning the religious makeup and attitudes of Americans who are sympathetic with the Tea Party movement. According to GateHouse News Service, the findings reveal:
Population
Of the U.S. total adult population, conservative Christians comprise 22 percent. Tea Partiers comprise 11 percent of the total adult populationhalf the size of the conservative Christian population, GateHouse News Service said.
Most Tea Partier respondents (81 percent) in the survey said they are Christian, and more than half (57 percent) said they are Christian conservatives, UPI said.
Issues
More than half of the Tea Party respondents (63 percent) said abortion should be illegal in all or most cases, UPI reported.
Less than one-quarter of Tea Partiers surveyed (18 percent) support same-sex marriage, UPI said.
Most Tea Party respondents (58 percent) support immigration reform that provides a pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens. Three-fourth of Tea Partiers surveyed (75 percent) said the federal government should have charge over the countys immigration policy, according to UPI.
Party affiliation
Over three-fourths (76 percent) of Tea Partiers surveyed are largely Republican. Of the total, almost half of Tea Party respondents (48 percent) said they identify with the GOP. The remainder (28 percent) said they were inclined towards Republicanism, the UPI reported.
◦More than three quarters of Tea Party respondents (83 percent) said they would either definitely vote for, or lean towards voting for Republican candidates in their districts. Most of them (74 percent) usually vote for Republican candidates anyway, Reuters said. Profile
According to GateHouse News Service, Tea Party members are mostly white and non-Hispanic. They largely support small government and overwhelmingly support Sarah Palin. Their most trusted news source is Fox News.
The poll was conducted by telephone from Sept. 1-14 and interviewed 3,013 respondents aged 18 and above across the U.S. The margin for error is two percentage points, according to UPI.
So?
Why didn’t the TeaPartyers just say they were Moslems to the pollsters? Think of the implications...
Shocking story.
OMG, nooooo....
"suppose you learned that politicians were devising policies that might, as a side effect of their enactment, nullify the law of karma. Bad deeds would no longer lead to bad outcomes, and the fragile moral order of our nation would break apart. For tea partiers, this scenario is not science fiction. It is the last 80 years of American history. "
Guilty
EEEEEEKKKK!!!!! HOW DID THEY FIND OUT??!!!???
Gotta love the implication here.
Most are Christians. Most are Conservatives (duh)
How many are evangelical Christians? Some, no doubt. According to this piece of stupidity: Most.
Ergo: Hate Them!!
“Most Tea Party respondents (58 percent) support immigration reform that provides a pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens.”
I seriously doubt that number. I think most Tea Partiers are smart enough to realize the whole “you can’t deport 30 million people” argument is bogus.
There is no need at all for a pathway to citizenship for criminals. If they leave on their own, they can get in line and use the “pathway to citizenship” that exists under current law. If they make us track them down and deport them, they’ll never be allowed to return for any reason. Put a bounty of $1,000 each on them and watch how quickly 30 million can be deported — for a one-time cost of $30B it would be a bargain.
Wonder how they define tea partier?
My exact thought.
