Read a Qur'an Day [Promoted by "US Catholic" ]
US Catholic ^ | 9/9/10 | Meghan Murphy-Gill

Here are the kind of reactionary Christians to get behind. In response to the Gainsville church attracting all kinds of national attention for their "Burn a Koran Day" plans, James McGrath suggests an organized reading of the Qur'an:

Particularly if you've only heard brief quotes from the Qur'an which sound almost as horrific as the things you'd read in Deuteronomy or Joshua in the Bible, then use this occasion to branch out a little and read something that gives a fuller sense of what is in the Qur'an.

Yesterday, the Vatican gave a statement on the burning of Islam's holy book noting that the events of September 11 "cannot be counteracted by an outrageous and grave gesture against a book considered sacred by a religious community."

Deplorable actions against Muslims, however, can be counteracted with an act of solidarity. Reading the Qur'an can deepen our sense of brother and sisterhood with our fellow citizens. And it's a far more powerful statement than an act of violence.

Sanity.........where art thou?

One lunatic wants to burn it and these idiots want us to read it.

What happened to common sense, and balance? Is the sensible position between these extremes slowly disappearing?

I thought of converting to Catholicism years ago. Glad I didn’t. Otherwise I’d be UN-converting today.

Actually, I read on a website that what we need is a “Burn a ‘US Catholic’ Day.” This rag does not have a single authentically Catholic position, and it’s obviously holding its own on this issue.

US Catholic is a heretical rag; it’s not the voice of the Vatican.

I strongly disagree with burning korans....it’s a waste of perfectly good toilet paper.

I don’t see anything with people reading the Koran. Freepers are always telling me I should read the bible.

If these are extremes, what’s is the sensible middle?...just let the book sit there?

It seems to me the part where the koran explicitedly denies Christ death and resurrection would pretty much put the book on the crap list for my bishop.

Why not just convert to Islam day.

Read a Qur’an day is a terrific idea. This book details every perverted and crazy idea that the islamofascists have employed to justify their actions. As a matter of fact, if more people read this book they would understand that there is no room for peace or tolerance in Islam.

And so as not to offend Scientologists, let’s have “Read Dianetics Day”

If she reads the whole thing including the hadiths and sura, it’s an excellent idea. The “trilogy” is 90% “horrific.” It might just grow the pea brain of hers.

I think that many non-Muslims would be quite shocked to discover what is actually in the Qur'an. It might help them understand exactly why Islam is the Religion of Perpetual Outrage. (hat tip to Michelle Malkin for that phrase)

It depends why one is reading.

Reading Das Kapital is fine if one is studying the roots of socialism and trying to understand the historical roots of Marxism. Indeed it's necessary in order to combat the errors contained therein.

To read it as an "act of solidarity", as these cranks are suggesting, is something quite different.

If there was the same level of international controversy and noteriety between the two, I would say yes.

Why don’t we just give up and throw ourselves at the mercy of the Sultan. We may be able to get land and title if we help. I mean, who cares? It’s all the same god anyway right?
