SEOUL, South Korea -- Like most North Koreans, Son Jong Nam knew next to nothing about Christianity when he fled to neighboring China in 1998.
Eleven years later, he died back in North Korean prison, reportedly tortured to death for trying to spread the Gospel in his native land, armed with 20 bibles and 10 cassette tapes of hymns. He was 50.

He served in the presidential security service for 10 years until his discharge as a master sergeant in 1983. In those years, he was ready to dedicate his life to fighting the American imperialists, his brother says. Son worked at an army-run performing arts center after his discharge.
The first twist in his life came in 1997.
His wife, eight months pregnant at the time, was arrested for allegedly saying Kim Jong Il had ruined the economy and caused a mass famine. Interrogators seeking a confession kicked her in the stomach, forcing her to discharge blood and have a miscarriage, Son's brother says.

Thanks for posting this, puts complaining about a long church service in perspective.
The enemy is hard at work.
It certainly can, just as it did to the apostle Paul.
We see here several important facts. The alternative to Christianity is the deification of man, specifically King Jong-Il in this case, but basically anyone who puts his own desires and glory ahead of everything else. Secondly, where the darkness is greatest, the light of the truth is most evident. In the West, where one is free to believe almost anything, the wonder of the Gospel is often overlooked, but in North Korea, its power is most evident.
Puts complaining about anything in perspective.
May angels lead you into paradise; upon your arrival, may the martyrs receive you and lead you to the holy city of Jerusalem.
May the ranks of angels receive you, and with Lazarus, the poor man, may you have eternal rest.
There are many brave and resourceful people already waiting to undermine Satan in one of his strongholds. All we have to do is provide them with money, which our society has in abundance. If that isn't an example of God's grace, what is? You, dear FReeper, can be a partner in the triumph of good over evil. Please support an organization which assists the persecuted church, like the Voice of the Martyrs:

Start watching at about 3:30. These are people who have been blind all their lives because of the horrible policies and starvation in Korea. Foreign doctors have gone over their to operate and restore their sight.
And then reflect on what this article says about Korea being a giant cult.
Yet another martyr (not the muslim version) dies for Christ. One more voice calling out to God for justice from beneath the Throne.
How many more will it be?
PS “Beneath” is not a denigration. Beneath the Throne is one of the highest places in all or creation IMHO.
all OF creation PIMF
He was 50.
He served in the presidential security service for 10 years until his discharge as a master sergeant in 1983
This would mean he entered the pres sec svc in 1973.
He would have been 13 or so.
The story is interesting, but the math doesn’t work
The rest of the story won’t be known until we all reach the other side - but martyrdom on this side releases the flood gates of conversions and salvation to many. Persecution of the church is like throwing gasoline on a fire. The way to kill the church is to overprosper it.
I’m wondering if it is a simple misprint. 1993 would make a lot more sense.
