Dr. David J. Lull, Professor of New Testament at Wartburg Theological Seminary gave a series of lectures in January 2010 titled, "Preaching Lent and Easter." It is amazing what ELCA pastors are being taught by our seminaries.
For all of my life I thought Jesus died for my sins. Thankfully Dr. Lull set me and the 2000 years of Christian teachers and believers straight.
Here is what Dr. Lull teaches.
"Jesus did not have to die as a condition of Gods forgiveness of sins. Mark knew that Jesus knew that God had always forgiven the sins of many/all, and that God would keep on forgiving their sins." (page 9)
" . . .I cant get past the idea that God had a thirst for innocent blood that had to be quenched, or that Gods justice required a death-penalty for sinners until Jesus death satisfied Gods wrath. Even if Bible passages can be made to support these ideas, I cant get past the idea that God had been unforgiving before Jesus died. Thats not the God I find in the Bible." (page 1)
"So, an alternative to traditional substitutionary or satisfaction atonement theories is to think of Good Friday, not as the beginning of Gods saving action in Jesus, but as its end, in the sense that it represents the aim and purpose, the first passion, of what God was doing in Jesus life all along: namely, entering in full solidarity and accompaniment with the marginalized and oppressed." ( page 2)
Fellow Christians. Please investigate what your denomination is teaching and decide if you want to continue to be part of that denomination and and what they teach.
Why did God require the Israelites to perform Ritual Sacrifice?
Was It just a test to see If they would be Obediant, as In the case of Abraham and Isaac?
Why is Christ referred to as “The Lamb of God”?
Did Christ not come to Fulfill the Law?
So you purport that Christ’s Sacrifice was Not necessary to fulfill the Law?
Christ was Baptised by John as it was necessary to fulfill the Law, Even though Christ was without Sin.
The Basic Issue is, Are we Saved by Faith or Grace or Sacraments?
And Is any one of these Mutually exclusive of the Other Two in the Path to Salvation?
I Don’t agree with the Premise of ELCA Teachings.
Discuss.
When you see “ELCA” in the title, you can skip reading. You know its crap.
Brings to mind the story Father Groeschel of EWTN has told several times - he once attended an early morning sunrise Easter service with a Jewish friend who wanted to experience this particular religious opportunity - the service was conducted by a “progressive” priest with some radical ideas who announced that in fact Jesus had not actually died on the cross to redeem mankind - “so what did I have to get out of bed so early this morning for?” mumbled the Jewish man.....
Dr. Lull is aptly named. He is simply spewing shallow leftist tripe that holds out no hope beyond something a little better in this life ... maybe. I read what he writes and try to imagine Christian martyrs by the thousands surrendering their lives for what he claims as the meaning of Jesus’ life and death ... and I can’t decide whether to laugh or to puke.
Sounds like Dr. Lull read some of Bishop Spong’s books.
just another example of the “great falling away” before Christ returns.
“Sounds like Dr. Lull read some of Bishop Spongs books.”
And Marcus Borg’s, too. Heaven help us.
He almost lost his faith because of the poofter synod.

Alleluia! Christ Ascends with shouts of joy!
Edging ever closer to Mohammad’s point of view.
All they have to do is infiltrate and control the seminaries and indoctrinate the young skulls full of mush......then wait it out a generation or two.
Patient evil and evil patience.

I know a student at Lutheran School of Theology, at Chicago. She said that, about a year ago, every student, at that seminary, signed a petition to show that they support ordaining gays. The majority of the students support the new health care law.
They are not atheists, they are neo-muslims.
This is EXACTLY the view of Mohammad. Get ready for the Islam-Christian unity movement. All you need to do is shuck Jesus' divinity and your are there.
Just a couple of days ago an ELCA Bishop spoke glowingly to a group of his Synod’s clergy about a “wonderful experience of shared faith” through participating in “ecumenical”— NOTE THE WORD, ECUMENICAL, NOT INTERFAITH — prayers for peace with Native Americans, Moslems, and Buddhists.
wow.
1. Is David Lull related to the late Timothy Lull?
2. Here is an exposition on Redemption by Orthodox theologian Thomas Hopko (warning—it’s rather long):
http://www.oca.org/OCchapter.asp?SID=2&ID=20
Dr. Lull would be able to overcome SOME of his concerns (like the idea that God the Father is bloodthirsty) with an Orthodox view of Redemption. But he would no doubt choke on the main issues—the connection between sin and death and our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ as the Conquerer of death!!!!
3. My former ELCA pastor called relations with muslims, Buddhists, etc. “the wider ecumenism”.He also preached that the Body of Christ includes muslims and Buddhists, etc., at an ecumenical event in a Roman Catholic church. Unfortunately, many Roman Catholics and even evangelical protestants (laity and clergy) who were present agreed with him!!!! (I think that it would be easy to find some Orthodox laity who would agree with him, too, even though the Orthodox Church strenuously follows the Biblical and traditional teaching on that matter. But that is a subject for another time.)
