What is Theonomy?

Theonomy means literally, “God’s law,” or the belief that the moral laws of the Old Testament are still binding today. This idea states that only Old Testament laws specifically fulfilled in the New Testament are non-binding (such as sacrificial laws, ceremonial laws and dietary laws). The moral Law of God is still the ethical standard for governing individuals and society.

In discussing theonomy, we should first explain clearly what we are not talking about. We are not talking about salvation, but merely government of individuals in society. Salvation cannot come through the Law, but only by grace through faith. A Christian is not under the Law as a means of obtaining salvation; nor are we under the curse of the Law since we were justified by faith. Yet when modern evangelicals claim, “I’m not under the Law,” what they often mean is that they are not in favor of it or they are not keeping it. Such a view is called: antinomianism (anti-Law) — a heresy.

We do not advocate the domination of the church over the state.

Nor do we want the state to dominate the church. We want both church and state to conform to God’s law. Thus we advocate a “theocracy” — the rule of God in society through His law. We do not advocate an “ecclesiocracy” — the rule of the state by the church. We want both church and state to independently conform to biblical law.

I recently posted a link to a clip in which the great Sarah Palin PROUDLY declared that the USA is and ALWAYS HAS BEEN a Judeo-CHRISTIAN nation.

Hearing her words inspired me to look up this essay which, I am glad to say, is still posted. Theonomy and FREE MARKETS will save America.

the great Sarah Palin

What exactly makes her great?

The fact that she believes as you do?

Doesn't that make you just as "great"?

I do not favor Palin in politics, but i do favor the moral precepts and principals of the Bible being the foundation for our laws. And what is seldom realized is that every government engages in a form of theonomy, as moral laws are based upon beliefs, whether right or wrong. One need not look to far to see both elements of worship in secularism, as well as a state-sanctioned secular ethos functioning as religion, displacing the prior Biblical basis (primarily) for our laws. Jesus said in Matthew 5:17, “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill." Did Jesus fail his mission to fulfill the law? Did Jesus fail to fulfill the moral law? Did He only fulfill part of the law? Was the Jerusalem Council, and the Holy Spirit, in Acts 15 wrong in laying "no other burdens" upon Christians?

"And THIS is is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment." 1 John 3:23

Theonomy apporaches — if it doesn’t cross the line into — open heresy.

One does NOT have to be a Theonomist to believe that the United States was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, or that God had uniquely called and enabled our nation to play a role in His plans for the world...
