Upon his retirement , Mahony needs to join the Episcopal Church in LA, soon to be led by lesbian Bishop Mary Glasspool. This would allow both Protestants and Catholics to gain on the exchange. Neither one would have to be concerned about sexual advances by the other, and he could pose as an administrative consultant ostensibly to educate her regarding arcane duties of the office of Bishop.
