US Jewish leaders denounce Catholic sermon

American Jewish leaders on Friday denounced a Vatican official's likening of anti-Catholicism during the church's escalating abuse crisis to "collective violence" against Jews, but predicted it would not deal a severe blow to the two faiths' often-strained relationship. "What a sad irony this would be on Good Friday, where so much of the anti-Semitism was brought about by the church against Jews," said Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League. "Anti-Semitism was pogroms, inquisitions, expulsions that led to death ... What a grotesque comparison." During a Good Friday sermon, Pope Benedict XVI's personal preacher compared accusations against the pope and the Catholic church in the abuse scandal to "collective violence" suffered by the Jews. The priest, the Rev. Raniero Cantalamessa, quoted a letter from a Jewish friend who wrote that the accusations reminded him of the "more shameful aspects of anti-Semitism."

Anti-defamation leagues are well known for hyperbole bordering on paranoia. A dose of realism is the antidote.

I have to agree that equating anything, especially criticism over sexual scandals, to the Holocaust, is a non-starter and in flagrantly poor taste.

Looks like Foxman has another fundraising campaign he’s pushing.

It seems Catholics aren’t happy that another group has out-martyred them. :-)

The Roman "church" started it's anti-semitism
at the council of Nicea, when it it rejected
YHvH commanded Feasts and His Chosen People
and substituted them with Pagan feasts and anti-semitism.

The point is that the history of demonizing Jews is what is happening against the Church.

This is a campaign to drive people from faith.
Many people have a faith that is tied to an institution.
When people maintain their faith through belief in the Trinity. Nothing said by a “reporter” will shake that faith.

So once again, the priest was repeating what a Jewish friend wrote.

Abe Foxman should realize that Catholics are NOT the enemy of Jewish people.

Liberals are.

After reading some of the comments on some of the stories about this subject (and I'm not speaking of comments on FR here, but those at places like Yahoo and the MSM), I don't think it takes much imagination to say that we're on the same trajectory that led to the Holocaust.

When people say bluntly that the Catholic Church is worse than Saddam Hussein and Catholicism needs to be stamped out, what do you suppose they contemplate doing with those of who refuse to let our faith be "stamped out"?

We aren't talking "tolerance" and "laissez faire" when we start talking about ending a religion with a billion professed adherents.

If someone said "Judaism needs to be stamped out," what would Abe Foxman think they were talking about?

Uh, did anyone pick up on the fact that the priest giving the sermon WAS QUOTING A JEW AT THE TIME!!!

It was a Jew who said so what’s the big deal?

Maybe Abe Foxman needs to change the name of the Anti-Defamation League to the Anti-Holocaust League and then any anti-Semitism that falls short of extermination camps can be okay. < /sarc>

If the ny slimes had read or heard the good Father’s sermon and reported it accurately they would not have been able to add fuel to the fire that their lies and innuendo has started. The priest quoted a letter from his Jewish friend. Are they calling the priest a liar? Or, are they saying that he does not have a Jewish friend. What is this world coming to? Jesus said to Peter, “thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church and gates of hell shall not prevail against it”. Peter was the first Pope of the Catholic Church and the ny slimes will not bring the Church down. God Bless all and a Happy and Blessed Easter to all.

I see that you are still engaging in your usual Catholic charity.

Did your advanced theological training include Alinsky's Rules for Radicals?

You never seem to be able to discuss any issue;
you always attack the person.

The attacks are always in the most uncharitable and supercilious manner.

It is clearly not a witness of a follower of the Messiah, Yah'shua.

Friend, it is called the “new covenant”, that is, the feasts of the Lamb of God.

American Jews have far bigger problems than the content of this sermon.
