One of the saddest things about history classes in the US is the near total ignorance that North Africa, Egypt, Syria, Turkey, etc were all Christian before the muslims came and conquered. Only when the west finally responded to hundreds of years of attacks (including invasions of Spain, Italy, and the Eastern Roman Empire) do the historians talk about the area being attacked for “no reason” by the “evil” Christian crusaders.
