NEW YORK All copies of the student paper at Brigham Young University have been recalled after a caption labeled a group of Mormon church leaders as "apostates" instead of "apostles."
The paper claims it was typo caused by spell check. Students, the university statement suggests, are "confused" over the matter but some claim paper is known to be "sloppy" anyway. Readers were told to peruse the paper online.
The university explained: "A spelling error appeared in a photo caption in which the word 'apostle' was rendered as 'apostate.' In referring to activities at the General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints last weekend, the caption read in part, 'Members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostates and other general authorities raise their hands in a sustaining vote. . . '.
Brad Rawlins, chair of the Department of Communications said, We are reprinting the paper and we will have the corrected version back on the racks by mid-afternoon This shows the deep concern we have on the matter. We dont think this error is glib or cute or humorous. We understand people will take offense to the error. We ourselves are offended as a department for this error. We have a deep regret that it appeared in todays paper.
More from the school follows. To see the photo and caption go to our blog: http://eandppub.com *
Daryl Gibson, director of NewsNet IT, said this is the first time the paper has been pulled because of a news error in his more than 30 years of working at BYU...
Hillary Miller, a media arts major from Arcadia, Calif., was concerned about the situation. I hope someone isnt just fooling around, she said. It would be sad if someone was trying to do harm to our church. According to a formal statement by the Department of Communications, there was no malicious intent.
Carri Jenkins, director of University Communications and assistant to the president, commended the Department of Communications for its quick action.
It appears this was an honest mistake, Jenkins said. The fact that The Daily Universe staff and the Communications Department have acted so quickly shows their concern and the seriousness with which they regard this error.
Administrators in the Department of Communications said they were interviewing students and staff Monday to determine how the error happened. Apparently a student copy editor used InDesigns spell check function to check all the photo captions. The student told Evans that InDesign suggested the misspelled word and the student failed to catch the error.
Clearly this is an unacceptable mistake, and well be spending a great deal of time with our students over the next several weeks to carefully examine our review processes, Department of Communications administrators said in a formal statement.
Should read, “With that mind-set, it’s not unbelievable that the Apostate/Apostle ERROR was made.
Actually, when you consider how many folks, how many church bodies, and how many church sects that LDS label as "apostates," (see ** below) 'tis obvious they've just got "'apostates' on the brain!"
"I'm an apostate, you're an apostate...wouldn't you like to be an apostate, too? Drink Dr. Koolaid."
** "Christendom" -- as defined by LDS apostle Bruce R. McConkie: The term applies to the whole body of supposed Christian believers; as now constituted, this body is properly termed APOSTATE Christendom (Mormon Doctrine, p. 131).
McConkie added: A perverted Christianity holds sway among the so-called Christians of apostate Christendom. (p. 132) (So, now we're not only "apostates," but "perverted" and "so-called Christians.")
That's a LIE!
The words are SPELLED correctly!
Perhaps Apostle was incorrectly spelled and the correction suggested by the spell checker was Apostate.
I have had that type of thing happen to me.
(I hope it doesn't become a case like the Hofmann forgeries, though...where the highest church officials were trying to get first nab @ some of these things to bury them in the infamous underground church vault)
No wonder some FREEPER posters are constantly being told by LDS FREEPERS how "offensive" their posts are...seems they're so "offense-happy" that BYU's Communications Department Chair says they even offend themselves!
And here wasn't it the LDS apologists, FAIR, who came up with a Daniel C. Peterson piece called, "Offenders for a Word?" -- trying to make some big case that just because LDS use a distinctive word, it offends Christians?
Well, all these BYU students were doing was to do the same thing Mormons have done for 179 years -- you take a good Christian word and then redefine it 180 degrees! That's been Mormon tradition from the get-go!!! Retrieving all these publication copies & reprinting them? Isn't BYU showing now who's being the "Offenders for a Word?"
Translation: "Our hierarchy is not hierarchical enough."
Since Jos. Smith was the first mormon apostate, it’s only logical that all who follow in his footsteps are also apostates.
Ouch, freudian slip?
That is just classic.
Well, we know this Phrase isn't biblical -- so it can't be a "restoration" of the original. (So we know LDS have abandoned original titles -- and have created their own)
(And even if LDS try to say, "Hey, Jesus had 12 disciples/apostles" -- then they know neither the Bible nor even the Book of Mormon.)
Jesus actually had at least 14 apostles. Judas killed himself, leaving 11. Matthias replaced him as the 12th (13th accumulative apostle). Then Jesus, post-resurrection, personally chose Saul/Paul. So, even if you discount Judas, it's still 13.
What's more, if LDS say they believe the Book of Mormon is history...then their account goes that the resurrected Jesus went to South or Central America to establish yet another testimony/church of Jesus. Well, if this is history, how many apostles did the American Jesus establish? (A second set of 12). That makes for 24-25 apostles -- all contemporary to each other.
So if the LDS Church is a true "restoration" of the original church, why don't they have a "Quorum of 24" or a "Quorum of 25"???...Could it be because they don't really believe that the Book of Mormon was historical?
Well, there’s no yellow journalism in that paper..
LOL
This explains why nobody knows why Joey Smith claimed he had found that Presbyterianism is untrue...
He meant to say something positive and affirming as he was informing his Mom that he wanted to become a Presbyterian minister, but he sneezed “achoo” and the spell check picked it up as “untrue”...
Mystery solved...

Given the BOM etc., Joey must have had a severe case of hay fever...

INdeed: I have to.
I retract my calling it a LIE!

The Wicked Bible, sometimes called The Adulterous Bible or The Sinners' Bible is a term referring to the Bible published in 1631 by Robert Barker and Martin Lucas, the royal printers in London, which was meant to be a reprint of the King James Bible. The name is derived from the compositors' mistake: in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:14) the word not in the sentence Thou shalt not commit adultery was omitted. This blunder was spread in a number of copies....
Look! Over there......
lol
You misspelled hysterical.
