Nearer, My God, to Thee - Lyrics [Devotiona]
Net Hymnal ^

Nearer, My God, to Thee -

Words: Verses 1-5, Sarah F. Adams, in Hymns and Anthems, by William Johnson Fox, 1841; verse 6, Edward H. Bickersteth, Jr.

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E’en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.

Refrain

Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee!

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone.
Yet in my dreams I’d be nearer, my God to Thee.

Refrain

There let the way appear, steps unto Heav’n;
All that Thou sendest me, in mercy given;
Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee.

Refrain

Then, with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I’ll raise;
So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee.

Refrain

Or, if on joyful wing cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I’ll fly,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.

Refrain

There in my Father’s home, safe and at rest,
There in my Savior’s love, perfectly blest;
Age after age to be, nearer my God to Thee.

Refrain

Many see the music sung in church to be songs. I view them as prayers and religious poetry. I will post both hymns and "praise and worship" songs, that we may consider their words carefully, learn, and Praise God together.

Ping me to get on/off my worship ping list.

This one is at my mother's request.

If you provide “It is Well With My Soul”, you should also provide Spafford’s story.

I think about the sinking of the Titanic, whenever this song is sung.

Out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise;

I must admit I have never seen all of the lyrics to this song. Is this verse referring to Jacob's ladder?
