San Francisco Archbishop to Honor Major Planned Parenthood Donor

San Francisco, Apr. 10, 2008 (CWNews.com) - At a Catholic Charities event scheduled for April 11, San Francisco's Archbishop George Niederauer will honor a California financier who has backed Planned Parenthood, opposed parental notification on abortion, and supported embryonic stem-cell research, the California Catholic Daily reports.

At an annual banquet, Archbishop Niederauer will present the "Loaves and Fishes" awards to several honorees, including George Marcus, a real-estate investment mogul who will be recognized for "outstanding philanthropic works" that, according to the dinner citation, "epitomize the spirit of the faith traditions of charity and generosity.

In a critical report on the award, the California Catholic Daily notes that Marcus has been a major financial backer of leftists causes, including opposition to the "Proposition 73" campaign, backed by the Catholic bishops of California, which would have required notification to the parents of underage girls before they obtained an abortion. Marcus also backed a referendum to provide taxpayer funding for embryonic stem-cell research, and he has been a significant donor to Planned Parenthood.

It's great that you still have outrage.

I'm pretty much numb from all this by now.............

Dear Lord,

Could you please engage in a bit of smiting. We would gladly sweep away the ashes.

Pray for an end to abortion and the conversion of America to a mindset of life!

I always felt that the Pope got snookered (by Levada) on Neiderauer. I don’t know who recommended Levada in the first place, though; he apparently hasn’t worked out that well, and has been somewhat sidelined as a result. Can’t sideline him enough, IMHO. San Francisco has not had an orthodox bishop in generations.

Not just SF, now you can hardly find an orthodox bishop anywhere on the left coast. With a few exceptions they range from outright apostates and heretics to weak, vague, ‘peace and justice’ types who will speak out on global warming but not abortion.

In my archdiocese (Portland), a parish priest recently asked parents to bring their children a bit early to Mass so they could all say the Rosary together. You would think people would rejoice at a priest taking this sort of initiative. The parents complained to Archbishop Vlazny, who instead of giving them a gentle lesson in piety, respect for their priest, or Marian devotion, chastised the priest and told him to “compromise” by saying one decade only.

I wonder what percentage of Catholic Bishops in the US are pro-abortion. A few (very few) have been vocally pro-life, but they seem more than offset by those on the other end of the scale.

Very true. It's been all downhill since Archbishop Mitty died in 1961. From there, it went to McGucken (liberal) to Quinn (even worse) to Levada (no better) to Niederauer (even worse).

Let’s also pray for the conversion of some bishops to Catholicism.

Can't say I am surprised. Fruits of Vatican II. A traditional parish would have been there a full hour ahead of time with Rosaries in hand and young'uns in tow.
