The Holy Tridentine Roman Rite Mass

The Tridentine Mass takes its name from the Council of Trent ( 1545-63 ), under the watchful eye of Pope Saint Pius V. The "Tridentine Rite" is, therefore, more properly called the Ancient or Traditional Roman Rite. The last edition of its missal was published in 1962.

The traditional Roman Rite differs from the new rite -- the 1969 Novus Ordo. This “new Mass” omits about 70 percent of the traditional Mass prayers. Most consider the traditional Latin Mass to be much more formal, more dignified.

It’s emphasis is on the sacrifice of Jesus and the recognition of the “true presence” of Jesus—Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity—in the Holy Eucharist. The entire Mass focuses on the Consecration of the Body and Blood and on reception of Christ in Holy Communion. This is represented in the photograph below.

The priest and the faithful face forward to the altar...and to God. The Holy Traditional Tridentine Roman Rite Latin Mass is the manner in which Catholics worshiped The One True God for well over 1,000 years. For those over the age of 40, it is the Mass of their youth. For those too young to remember incense filled churches, Gregorian chant, and the reverent silence at Mass, the Tridentine rite offers a return to a profound manner of worship.

THE ATHANASIAN CREED

The Athanasian Creed, attributed to Saint Athanasius, also know as the Quicumque vult, was formerly recited at the office of Prime on Sundays and Trinity Sunday is the time when we renew our commitment to our Faith and the dogma Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus - "Outside the Church There is No Salvation." The Athanasian Creed is one of the four authoritative Creeds of Holy Mother Church, and it is not something that is an opinion but what every Roman Catholic must believe.

   

Quicumque vult salvus esse, ante omnia opus est, ut teneat catholicam fidem: Quam nisi quisque integram inviolatamque servaverit, absque dubio in aeternam peribit. Fides autem catholica haec est: ut unum Deum in Trinitate, et Trinitatem in unitate veneremur. Neque confundentes personas, neque substantiam seperantes. Whosoever wishes to be saved must, above all, keep the Catholic Faith. For unless a person keeps this Faith whole and entire, he will undoubtedly be lost forever. This is what the Catholic Faith teaches: we worship one God in the Trinity and the Trinity in unity. Neither confounding the Persons, nor dividing the substance. For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son, another of the Holy Spirit. But the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit have one divinity, equal glory, and coeternal majesty. What the Father is, the Son is, and the Holy Spirit is. The Father is uncreated, the Son is uncreated, and the Holy Spirit is uncreated. The Father is boundless, the Son is boundless, and the Holy Spirit is boundless. The Father is eternal, the Son is eternal, and the Holy Spirit is eternal. Nevertheless, there are not three eternal beings, but one eternal being. So there are not three uncreated beings, nor three boundless beings, but one uncreated being and one boundless being. Likewise, the Father is omnipotent, the Son is omnipotent, the Holy Spirit is omnipotent. Yet there are not three omnipotent beings, but one omnipotent being. Thus the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. However, there are not three gods, but one God. The Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, and the Holy Spirit is Lord. However, there as not three lords, but one Lord. For as we are obliged by Christian truth to acknowledge every Person singly to be God and Lord, so too are we forbidden by the Catholic religion to say that there are three Gods or Lords. The Father was not made, nor created, nor generated by anyone. The Son is not made, nor created, but begotten by the Father alone. The Holy Spirit is not made, nor created, nor generated, but proceeds from the Father and the Son. There is, then, one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three sons; one Holy Spirit, not three holy spirits. In this Trinity, there is nothing before or after, nothing greater or less. The entire three Persons are co-eternal and co-equal with one another. So that in all things, as is has been said above, the Unity is to be worshipped in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity. He, therefore, who wishes to be saved, must believe thus about the Trinity. It is also necessary for eternal salvation that he believes steadfastly in the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Thus the right faith is that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is both God and man. As God, He was begotten of the substance of the Father before time; as man, He was born in time of the substance of His Mother. He is perfect God; and He is perfect man, with a rational soul and human flesh. He is equal to the Father in His divinity, but inferior to the Father in His humanity. Although He is God and man, He is not two, but one Christ. And He is one, not because His divinity was changed into flesh, but because His humanity was assumed unto God. He is one, not by a mingling of substances, but by unity of person. As a rational soul and flesh are one man: so God and man are one Christ. He died for our salvation, descended into hell, and rose from the dead on the third day. He ascended into Heaven, sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. At His coming, all men are to arise with their own bodies; and they are to give an account of their own deeds. Those who have done good deeds will go into eternal life; those who have done evil will go into the everlasting fire. This is the Catholic Faith. Everyone must believe it, firmly and steadfastly; otherwise He cannot be saved. Amen.

RULES FOR FASTING

Everyone over 21 and 59 years of age is bound to observe the law of fast. The days of fast are all the days in Lent, all days of partial abstinence except Sundays. On days of fast only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength may be taken according to each one's need, but together they should not equal another full meal. Meat may be taken at the principal meal on a day of fast except on days of complete abstinence. Eating between meals is not permitted but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, consult your parish priest or confessor.

RULES FOR ABSTINENCE

Everyone over 7 years of age is bound to observe the law of abstinence. Complete abstinence is to be observed on Fridays, Ash Wednesday, Holy Saturday and the Vigils of the Immaculate Conception (December 7) and Christmas (December 24). On days of complete abstinence, meat and soup or gravy made from meat may not be used at all. Partial abstinence is to be observed on Ember Wednesdays and Saturdays and the vigil of Pentecost (Saturday before). On days of partial abstinence, (which are all the days of Lent) which are not complete abstinence days or Sundays, meat and soup or gravy made from meat may be taken only once a day at the principal meal.

A Review of the Ten Commandments

Preliminary

Besides telling the nature of your sins, you must also recollect, as far as possible, the number of times you have committed them, telling also ( and only ) those circumstances which at times may either make a venial sin mortal or a mortal sin notably worse.

1. Have I ever failed to confess a serious sin or disguised it?
2. Have I been guilty of irreverence for this sacrament by failing to examine my conscience carefully?
3. Have I failed to perform the penance given me by the confessor or disobeyed any of his directions?
4. Have I neglected the Easter duty of receiving Holy Communion or failed to confess my sins within a year?
5. Have I any habits of serious sin to confess first (impurity, drunkenness, etc.)?
6. Have I improved on cutting down these habitual sins or is one confession after another sound like the same? If so, what can I resolve to improve?

First Commandment : I am the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not have strange gods before Me

1. Am I ignorant of my catechism ( Act of Contrition, Apostle's Creed, Ten Commandments, Seven Sacraments, the Our Father )?
2. Have I willfully doubted or denied any of the teachings of the Church ( heresy )?
3. Have I taken active part in any non-Catholic worship?
4. Am I a member of any anti-Catholic or any secret society?
5. Have I knowingly read any anti-Catholic literature or watched an anti-Catholic film or program or listened to anti-Catholic rhetoric?
6. Have I practiced any superstitions (horoscopes, fortune tellers, etc.)?
7. Have I failed to defend my Faith when it was attacked or have I remained silent for fear of being rebuked?

Second Commandment : Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain

1. Have I used God's name in vain by way of profanity?
2. Have I condoned others who use profanity by my silent approval?
3. Have I murmured or complained against God (blasphemy)?
4. Have I maligned priests or others consecrated to God without just reason?
5. Have I sworn by God's name (oath) either falsely or rashly?
6. Have I broken any vow to God either public or private?
7. Have I rationalized myself around a vow by cutting corners?

Third Commandment : Keep holy the Lord's Day

1. Have I missed Mass on Sundays or holydays through my own fault?
2. Have I been late for Mass through my own negligence?
3. Do I realize it is a venial sin to miss any part of the Mass?
4. Do I realize being really late for Mass is a mortal sin and my only alternative is to wait and go to another Mass?
5. Have I been inattentive at Mass or otherwise failed in reverence for the Most Blessed Sacrament?
6. Have I done unnecessary servile work (physical labor) or shopping on Sunday?
7. Have I eaten flesh meat on Friday (especially on Good Friday) or on Ash Wednesday or the assigned vigil fast days?
8. Have I obeyed the laws of the Church on fast and abstinence?

Fourth Commandment : Honor thy Father and Mother

1. Have I been disrespectful to my parents or neglected them?
2. Have I failed in obedience or reverence to others in authority?
3. Have I mistreated my wife or children?
4. Have I been disobedient or disrespectful to my husband?
5. Regarding my children:

-Have I neglected their material needs?
-Have I failed to care for their early Baptism or their proper religious instruction?
-Have I allowed them to neglect their religious duties?
-Have I tolerated their keeping questionable company or steady dating without chaperones?
-Have I otherwise failed to discipline them?
-Have I given them bad example in any way?
-Have I let boys and girls sleep together or with their parents?
-Have I interfered with their freedom to marry or follow a religious vocation?

Fifth Commandment : Thou shalt not kill

1. Have I placed any one's life in danger?
2. Have I threatened any one's life in anger?
3. Have I condoned or promoted abortion?
4. Have I condoned or tolerated others who promote abortion?
5. Have I taken pleasure in anyone's misfortune?
6. Have I jeopardized others by my driving recklessly?
7. Have I used contraceptives thus preventing life?
8. Have I been sympathetic to those contemplating suicide?

Sixth & Ninth Commandments : Thou shalt not commit adultery and Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife

1. Have I committed adultery or fornication?
2. Have I jeopardized my marriage by flirting or untoward glances and advances toward the opposite sex?
3. Have I denied my spouse his or her marriage rights?
4. Have I practiced birth control?
5. Have I abused my marriage rights in any other way?
6. Have I touched or embraced another impurely?
7. Have I sinned with others of the same sex?
8. Have I committed masturbation or otherwise sinned impurely with myself?
9. Have I harbored lustful desires for anyone?
10. Have I indulged in other impure thoughts?
11. Have I failed to dress modestly?
12. Have I done anything to provoke or occasion impure thoughts in others?
13. Have I read indecent literature or looked at indecent pictures or websites?
14. Have I watched suggestive films or television programs?
15. Have I permitted my children or others under my charge to do these things?
16. Have I used indecent language or told indecent stories?
17. Have I willingly listened to such stories?
18. Have I boasted of my sins?
19. Have I condoned promiscuity by my silent consent of the actions of others?
20. Have I sinned against chastity in any other way?
21. Do I realize my body is the temple of the Holy Ghost and must be treated as such?
22. Do I realize that there are more souls in hell for the sins of the flesh than any other sin? How seriously do I take that and what can I do to become more chaste?

Seventh & Tenth Commandments : Thou shalt not steal and Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods

1. Have I stolen anything?
2. Have I damaged anyone's property through my own fault?
3. Have I cheated or defrauded others?
4. Have I refused or neglected to pay any just debts?
5. Have I neglected my duties or been slothful in my work?
6. Have I refused or neglected to help anyone in urgent necessity?
7. Have I failed to make restitution?
8. Have I harmed the good name or reputation of others in any way?

Eighth Commandment : Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor

1. Have I lied about anyone ( calumny )?
2. Have I rash judged anyone of a serious sin?
3. Have I engaged in gossip (detraction) or spread scandal?
4. Have I lent an ear to scandal about my neighbor?
5. Have I been jealous or envious of anyone?
6. Have I taken pleasure in anyone's misfortune?
8. Have I quarreled with any one and caused scandal?
2. Have I cursed anyone or otherwise wished evil on him?
7. Is there anyone to whom I refuse to speak or be reconciled?

OTHER SINS :

1. Have I knowingly caused others to sin?
2. Have I cooperated in the sins of others?
3. Have I sinned by gluttony?
4. Have I become intoxicated?
5. Have I misused liquor or narcotics?
6. Have I been motivated by avarice?
7. Have I indulged in boasting or vain glory?
8. Have I received Holy Communion or another sacrament in the state of mortal sin?
9. Is there any other sin I need to confess?

Take time to thoroughly go over the list before you travel to church to go to confession. Once at church or in line for confession, recall the sins you have examined, and sincerely say the following prayer:

Prayer to the Holy Ghost

Come, Holy Ghost, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love. Send forth Thy Spirit and they shall be created and Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Shield of the Servants of Mary

Between the years 1225 and 1227 seven young Florentines joined the Confraternity of the Blessed Virgin —popularly known as the 'Laudesi' or Praisers. It was a period when the prosperous city of Florence was being rent by political factions and distracted by the heresy of the Cathari: it was also a time of general relaxation of morals even where devotional practices were retained. These young men were members of the most prominent families of the city. Whether they were all friends before they joined the Laudesi is not clear, but in that confraternity they became closely allied.

The eldest was Buonfiglio Monaldo, who became their leader. The others were Alexis Falconieri, Benedict dell' Antella, Bartholomew Amidei, Ricovero Uguccione, Gerardino Sostegni, and John Buonagiunta. They had as their spiritual director James of Poggibonsi, who was chaplain of the Laudesi, a man of great holiness and spiritual insight. All of them came to realize the call to a life of renunciation, and they determined to have recourse to our Lady in their perplexity. On the Feast of the Assumption in 1240, together, the Founders received a vision of Our Lady. She held in her hand the black habit, and a nearby angel bore a scroll reading Servants of Mary. The Blessed Virgin Mary told them,

'You will found a new order, and you will be my witnesses throughout the world. This is your name: Servants of Mary. This is your rule: that of Saint Augustine. And here is your distinctive sign: the black scapular, in memory of my sufferings.'


From that date, April 13, 1240, they were known as the Servants of Mary, or Servites. There were difficulties, because, though three of them were celibates, four had been married and had ties, although two had become widowers. Suitable provision for their dependents was arranged, and with the approval of the bishop they withdrew from the world and betook themselves to a house called La Carmarzia, outside the gates of Florence, twenty-three days after they had received their call. Before long they found themselves so much disturbed by constant visitors from Florence that they decided to withdraw to the wild and deserted slopes of Monte Senario, where they built a simple church and hermitage and lived a life of almost incredible austerity.

In spite of difficulties, visitors sometimes found their way to the hermits and many wished to join them, but they refused to accept recruits. So they continued to live for several years,—until they were visited by their bishop, Ardingo, and Cardinal Castiglione, who had heard about their sanctity. He was greatly edified, but made one adverse criticism: 'You treat yourselves in a manner bordering on barbarity: and you seem more desirous of dying to time than of living for eternity. Take heed: the enemy of souls often hides himself under the appearance of an angel of light . . . Hearken to the counsels of your superiors.'

They were clothed by the bishop himself, Buonfiglio being elected their superior. According to custom they selected names by which they should thenceforth be known, and became Brothers Bonfilius, Alexis, Amadeus, Hugh, Sostenes, Manettus and Buonagiunta. By the wish of the bishop, all except St. Alexis, who in his humility begged to be excused, prepared to receive holy orders, and in due time they were fully professed and ordained priests. The new order, which took a form more like that of the mendicant friars than that of the monastic orders, increased amazingly, and it soon became necessary to form fresh houses. Siena, Pistoia and Arezzo were the first places chosen, and afterwards the houses at Carfaggio, the convent and church of the Santissima Annunziata in Florence, and the convent at Lucca were established. Meanwhile, although the Servites had the approval of their immediate superiors, they had not been recognized by the Holy See. It was only in 1259 that the order was practically recognized by Alexander IV, and not until 1304 over sixty years after its foundation-that it received the explicit and formal approbation of Bd. Benedict XI. Saint Bonfilius had remained as prior general until 1256, when he begged to be relieved owing to old age. He died on new year's night, 1261.

Saint Buonagiunta, the youngest of the seven, was the second prior general, but not long after his election he breathed his last in chapel while the gospel of the Passion was being read. Saint Amadeus ruled over the important convent of Carfaggio, but returned to Monte Senario to end his days. Saint Manettus became fourth prior general and sent missionaries to Asia, but he retired to make way for Saint Philip Benizi, upon whose breast he died. Saint Hugh and Saint Sostenes went abroad—Sostenes to Paris and Hugh to found convents in Germany. They were recalled in 1276, and, being attacked by illness, they passed away side by side the same night. Saint Alexis, the humble lay-brother outlived them all, and he was the only one who survived to see the order fully and finally recognized. He is reported to have died at the age one hundred and ten.

Of Bright Clouds and Modernist Fogs

The Dark Cloud that has hung over the Vatican for the past 48 years has done much to obscure the Truths and Traditions of Holy Mother Church, clouding the minds and hearts of souls from realizing the simplicity and bright clarity of Catholic Truth. It is highly, doubtful that the Heavenly Father is pleased with the past five men who have occupied the Chair of Peter.

Blessed Apostle Saint Peter speaks to the Lord, Whom he sees engaged in conversation with Moses and Elias on the Mount of the Transfiguration, "Lord, it is good for us to be here," offering to set up three tents for our Lord and His celestial guests. This, "not knowing what he said," adds Blessed Apostle Saint Luke 9:33. No wonder, since God the Father spoke from a bright cloud that overshadowed them, "This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased; hear Him" ( Blessed Apostle Saint Matthew 17:1-9).

Clouds can be beautiful to behold as they float high in the sky above us, but fog can be confusing and dangerous. A reputed successor of Blessed Apostle Saint Peter, Benedict XVI, has recently published his first encyclical, Deus Caritas Est, which has been welcomed by many, but has also been described as "a masterpiece of Modernist obfuscation and fog" ( Thomas A. Droleskey, Ph.D., Teaching Us to Love Modernism and Modernity, Catholic Family News, March, 2006 ). Modernism, which seeks to adapt the unchanging doctrine of the Church to the ever-changing spirit of the times, is called "the synthesis of all heresies" by Pope St. Pius X, who says of the Modernists:

"Although they express their astonishment that We should number them among the enemies of the Church, no one will be reasonably surprised that We should do so, if, leaving out of account the internal disposition of the soul, of which God alone is the Judge, he considers their tenets, their manner of speech and their action. Nor indeed would he be wrong in regarding them as the most pernicious of all the adversaries of the Church. For, as We have said, they put into operation their designs for her undoing, not from without but from within" ( Pascendi Dominici Gregis, On Modernism, September 8, 1907).


Droleskey comments:

"As the synthesis of all heresies, Modernism masks itself very cleverly in order to beguile and to confuse the average Catholic into believing that truly revolutionary novelties are completely in accord with the Deposit of Faith. It is no exaggeration to state that Modernism is the most pernicious of all heresies as it is sometimes very difficult to cut through the morass of Catholic-sounding verbiage, replete with Scriptural quotations, in order to discover the insidious influence of erroneous and/or heretical notions…


"A Catholic must not delude himself into thinking that these so-called 'New Theologians,' who were really repackaged and re-labeled Modernists, do not exercise the preponderance of influence on the direction of the Church in the postconciliar era. Practically every aspect of the Faith is being redefined at present in light of the belief that there is nothing immutable in the nature of God's truths, no dogmatic declaration of the Church that is not capable of being revisited and hence 'updated,' no aspect of the Church's pastoral praxis which can be left untouched in order to continue a revolution that has devastated souls and given great offense to God Himself in the manner of the worship that is due Him in the offering of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass."

Speaking of the New Theologians, the Modernists who have influenced the mind of Benedict XVI, and whose influence can be detected in the new encyclical, Droleskey states:

"[I]t is to the late Hans Urs von Balthasar that goes the distinction of Modernist-in-Chief, if you will. Von Balthasar… promoted the fundamental heresy of Universal Salvation, the belief that all people, baptized and unbaptized, go to Heaven ( John Paul II's favorite theme - my comment ). As a result of his study of the new encyclical he concludes, "There is no doubt, therefore, that Deus Caritas Est and its discussion of God's love is the product of the heretical views of Hans Urs von Balthasar that God's love for man is such that no man will be damned for all eternity."


Benedict XVI, who long before his election as "pope" was Josef Ratzinger, one of the "New Theologians" ( i.e., a "re-packaged Modernist" ), is clearly a heretic. Benedict believes heresy, writes heresy, teaches heresy, leads bishops, priests and the Catholic faithful all over the world into heresy. What then must we conclude? The conclusion is inescapable, and we say this reluctantly, and sadly: There is no way that he can be the Vicar of Christ, the Sovereign Pontiff, the successor of Blessed Apostle Saint Peter.

According to the decree of Pope Paul IV:


"[I]f at any time it will be found that some bishop… conducting himself as an archbishop or patriarch… or… cardinal… or even a Roman Pontiff, before his promotion or assumption as cardinal or as Roman Pontiff, had deviated from the Catholic Faith or fallen into some heresy,… that promotion or assumption concerning him, even if made in concord and from the unanimous assent of all the cardinals, is null, void and worthless; [regardless of] the reception of consecration,… the ensuing possession of the office and administration,… the enthronement or homage of the Roman Pontiff, or the obedience given to him by all…" ( Pope Paul IV, Cum Ex Apostolatus Officio, 15 March, 1559 ).


No heretic can be pope; Benedict XVI is a heretic; therefore, Benedict XVI cannot be pope. It's as simple, and logical, as that. In short, to say that Benedict XVI is a heretic, which Droleskey clearly does in his article, is to say that he is not the pope. Yet he, like his fellow contributors to Traditionalist publications like Catholic Family News and The Remnant, continues to call him "the Holy Father," and to acknowledge the validity of his papacy, thus defying all logic. Perhaps, to that extent at least, despite their good work, their heads are in a fog too, or is there such a thing as a "brain cloud" after all?

Many of us believe that the true papal succession continued after the 1958 conclave, at which we believe Angelo Roncalli usurped the papal throne as John XXIII, but we don't know if it continues to this day. It is in God's hands now. Our present task is to watch and to pray. May our Father in Heaven overshadow us and speak to us from the bright cloud, as He spoke to His obedient and humble servants Blessed Apostles Peter, James and John: "'This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased; hear Him.' And on hearing it the disciples fell on their faces and were exceedingly afraid. And Jesus came near and touched them, and said to them, 'Arise, and do not be afraid.' But lifting up their eyes, they saw no one, but Jesus only" ( Blessed Apostle Saint Matthew 17:5-8).

Saint Benedict of Cagliari

Died after 1112. Saint Benedict was a monk in Saint Saturninus Basilica monastery at Cagliari, Sardinia, and bishop of Dolia, Sardinia, from 1107 to 1112. In his old age he retired to the abbey, where he spent his last days as a prayerful recluse at the basilica abbey.


Saint Constabilis of Cava

Born in Lucania, Italy, 1060; died 1124; canonized in 1893. Saint Constabilis was a monk under Saint Leo at La Cava Abbey near Naples, and in 1122, he was chosen as its fourth abbot. Constabilis built the town of Castelabbate, where he is now venerated as patron


Saint Donatus the Martyr

One of a group of 89 Catholics martyred together in the year 304 at Porto Gruaro, near Venice, Italy, during the Diocletian persecutions.


Saint Evermod of Ratzeburg

Died 1178. Saint Evermod was a priest under Saint Norbert, who evangelized the Wends. He was eventually chosen abbot of Gottesgnaden, then abbot of Magdeburg, and finally bishop of Ratzeburg.


Saint Faustinus and Companions

The Roman Martyrology records that of a group of 45 Catholics were killed on this day in Rome.



Saint Finan of Iona

Died 661. An Irish monk of Iona, who succeeded Saint Aidan in the governance of the Northumbrian church. He also bore Aidan's spirit of zeal, erudition, and prudence. Finan opposed Saint Ronan's introduction of the Roman liturgical practices in place of the Celtic ones, yet agreed to Saint Wilfrid's going from Lindisfarne to Rome. Attended by Saint Cedd and other missionaries, he evangelized parts of southern England. He became a friend of King Oswy of Northumbria, and baptized King Penda of the Middle Angles and later King Saint Sigebert of the East Saxons, who had been converted to Christianity by King Oswy.


Saint Fintan of Clonenagh

Born in Leinster; died 603. A disciple of Saint Columba (or according to Montague, Saint David), Fintan led the life of a hermit at Clonenagh in Leix. Soon numerous disciples, including Saint Comgal, attached themselves to him, and he became their abbot. Such was the austerity of the life led at Clonenagh that neighboring monasteries protested. Fintan himself was reputed to live on a diet of barley bread and clayey water; however, he established a less strict rule for some neighboring monks. One day some soldiers brought the severed heads of their enemies to the monastery. Fintan had these buried in the monks cemetery hoping that by the Judgment Day they would have benefited from the prayers of generations of monks: "since the principal part of their bodies rest here, we hope they will find mercy." Fintan's feast is celebrated throughout Ireland.

Legend says that Fintan's mother received an angelic visit to explain what a holy son she would have. Fintan was reputed to have the gifts of prophecy and knowledge of distant events. Witnesses say that when he prayed by himself, he was surrounded by light.


Saint Fortchern of Trim

Also known as Forkernus

6th century. Saint Fortchern is said to have been converted to the faith by Saint Loman, whom he succeeded as bishop of Trim, Ireland, before becoming a hermit (Benedictines). In art, St. Fortchern pictured as a bishop among bell-founders of whom he is the patron.


Blessed Frowin of Bellevaux

Died 1165. Blessed Frowin was a Cistercian at Bellevaux, Savoy, and the abbot-founder of Salom in the diocese of Constanz. He was a champion of Saint Bernard when the latter was preaching his crusade.


Blessed Francis Regis Clet

Also known as Gueroc; Keric; and Kerric

Born in Grenoble, France, 1748; died at Hankow, China, 1820; beatified in 1900. Blessed Francis joined the Lazarists and was sent to China in 1791. There he labored in the mission fields for 30 years in the face of many difficulties. At the age of 72, he was captured, tortured, and strangled for the faith.


Saint Guevrock

Also known as Gueroc; Keric; and Kerric

6th century. Saint Guevrock was a Briton who followed Saint Tadwal to Brittany and succeeded him as abbot of Loc-Kirec. He helped Saint Paul of León in the rule of the diocese.


Saint Habet-Deus

Died c. 500. Bishop Habet-Deus governed the diocese of Luna in Tuscany, Italy; a town that is now in ruins. Martyred by Arian Vandals, Saint Habet-Deus is venerated at Sarzana.

Catechumen at Caesarea, Palestine. Arrested for venerating the martyred Saint Elias and companions. Martyred by order of Firmilian, governor of Palestine. Burned to death in 309.


Saint Loman

Also known as Luman of Trim

Died c. 450; he has a second feast on October 11. Unreliable legend has him the son of St. Patrick's sister Tigris. Loman was probably at least a disciple of Patrick. He accompanied Patrick to Ireland and was left to navigate their boat up the Boyne while Patrick went to Tara. On the way, he met Fortchern, son of the chieftain of Trim, his mother, a Christian, and his father Fedelmid, a pagan. In time, he converted Fedelmid and his whole household, including his successor Fortchern, to Christianity. Fedelmid gave Patrick land at Trim for a church, and Loman became bishop of Trim in Meath, Ireland. Some scholars believe that in reality Loman was a bishop of Trim in the 7th century and in no way related to Patrick.


Blessed Luke Belludi

Also known as Lucas Belludi; and Lukas Belludi

Nobility. Brought into the Franciscans by Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Francis of Assisi. Anthony's companion in his travels and preaching, tending to him in his last days and taking Anthony's place upon his death. Guardian of the Friars Minor in the city of Padua.

In 1239 Padua fell, nobles were executed, the mayor and council banished, the university of Padua closed, and the church dedicated to Saint Anthony left unfinished. Luke was expelled, but secretly returned, visiting the tomb of Saint Anthony to pray for help. One night a voice from the tomb assured him that the city would soon be delivered; it was.

Saint Luke was elected provincial minister, and furthered the completion of the great basilica in honor of Anthony. Founded convents. Miracle worker.

Order of Servants of Mary; Servites; Servant Friars; Confraternity of Our Lady

Named the fifth mendicant order by Pope Martin V, it was founded in 1233 by

All were beatified on 1 December 1717 and canonized on 1887 as The Seven Holy Founders. On the Feast of the Assumption in 1240 the Founders received a vision of Our Lady. She held in her hand the black habit, and a nearby angel bore a scroll reading Servants of Mary. The Blessed Virgin Mary told them,

'You will found a new order, and you will be my witnesses throughout the world. This is your name: Servants of Mary. This is your rule: that of Saint Augustine. And here is your distinctive sign: the black scapular, in memory of my sufferings.


From their first establishment at La Camarzia, near Florence, they removed to the more secluded Monte Senario where the Holy Mother of God had conferred on them their habit, instructing them to follow the Rule of Saint Augustine, and to admit associates.

Official approval for the Servants of Mary was obtained in 1249; confirmed in 1256; suppressed in 1276; definitely approved in 1304; and again by Brief in 1928. The order was so rapidly diffused that by 1285 there were 10,000 members with houses in Germany. France, Italy, and Spain, and early in the 14th century it numbered 100 convents, besides missions in Crete and India.

The Reformation reduced the order in Germany, but it flourished elsewhere. Again meeting with political reverses in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, it nevertheless prospered, being established in England in 1867, and in America in 1870. The Servites take solemn vows and venerate in a special manner the Seven Dolors of Our Lady. They cultivate both the interior and the active life, giving missions and teaching. An affiliation, professing exclusively the contemplative life is that of the Hermits of Monte Senario. Reinstated in France, 1922. Cloistered nuns, forming a Second Order, have been affiliated with the Servites since 1619 when Blessed Benedicta di Rossi called the nuns of her community "Servite Hermitesses." The Hermits of Monte Senario have been established in England, Spain, Italy, the Tyrol, and Germany. A Third Order, the Mantellate, founded by Saint Juliana Falconieri under Saint Philip Benizi, c.1284, has houses in Italy, France, Spain, England, Canada, and the United States. Secular tertiaries and a confraternity of the Seven Dolors are other branches.


Saint Silvin of Auchy

Also known as Silvinus

Born at Toulouse (?), France; died February 15, c. 718-720. Silvinus, a courtier of Childeric II and Theodoric III, gave up his worldly life and became a penitential pilgrim to Jerusalem and other holy sites. In Rome, he was ordained, then consecrated regional bishop and evangelized in the area around Thérouanne and Toulouse. He was indefatigable in preaching Christian truths and essential obligations, and taught the pagans to despise and renounce the pleasures of this life, by appearing on all occasions a strong lesson of self-denial and mortification. Thus, instructing them both by words and actions, he gathered a large harvest in a wild and uncultivated field. After some 40 years of missionary activity, which included the ransoming of many slaves, he retired to the Benedictine abbey of Auchy-les-Moines, where he died worn out by evangelizing.

He is commemorated in Usuard, the Belgic, and Roman martyrologies, on February 17, the day of his burial, and at Auchy on February 15. Most of his relics reside now in Saint-Bertin's Church at Saint- Omer, to which they were translated in 951, for fear of the invaiding Normans. His original vita, which was ascribed to Antenor, a disciple of the saint, is lost; the one that remains was compiled in the ninth century.


Saint Theodulus and Julian of Caesarea

Died 308. Theodulus was an old man of the household of Firmilian, governor of Palestine, by whom he was crucified in Caesarea, Palestine. Theodulus's personal merit gained him the love of all who knew him, and the governor had a particular esteem for him. Eusebius records that this holy man had seen the invincible courage and patience of the five Egyptian martyrs at Caesarea (Elias, Jeremy, and companions), and, going to the prisons, made use of their example to encourage the other confessors, and prepare them for similar battles. Firmilian, vexed at the conduct of his old favorite servant, sent for him, reproached him strongly with ingratitude, and, without hearing his defense, condemned him to be crucified. Theodulus received with joy the sentence that would speedily unite him to his Savior.

Julian was a Cappadocian catechumen, highly esteemed by the faithful for his great virtues, who had just recently arrived in Caesarea. Whereupon hearing of the conflicts of the martyrs, he ran to the place, and finding the execution over, expressed his veneration for them, by kissing and embracing the bodies which had been animated by those heroic and happy souls. The guards apprehended him, and carried him to the governor, who, finding him as inflexible as the rest, would not lose his time in useless interrogatories, but immediately ordered him to be burnt. Julian, now master of all he wished for, gave God thanks for the honor done him by this sentence, and begged he would be pleased to accept of his life as a voluntary sacrifice. The courage and cheerfulness which he maintained to his last moment, filled his executioners with surprise and confusion.



Saint Theodore Stratelates

Also known as Theodore the General; Theodore Tyro; Theodore the Recruit; and Theodore Tiro

Roman general ( stratelates ) and covert Christian during a time of persecution. Exposed as a Christian, a military tribunal decided he was a good soldier who had made a mistake, told him to reconsider, and set him free; he promptly burned down a pagan temple. Arrested again, he was ordered to apostatize, then tortured by having his flesh torn off; he responded by reciting the Psalms. Martyred 319 at Heraclea, Thrace.


Saint Walter of Pontnoise

Also known as Walter Gautier

Well educated in general, and a professor of philosophy and rhetoric. Joined the Benedictines at Rebais-en-Brie to escape the world and the temptations presented by success in his field. Against his will he was made abbot of Pontnoise by King Philip I; Walter reminded the king that it was by God's will that he did such a thing, not the crown's. He fled the house several times to escape the position, the last time he escaped to Rome where he gave Pope Gregory VII his written resignation; the pope told him to return to his house, assume his responsibilities as abbot, and never leave again. He obeyed. Worked against simony, lax discipline, and dissolute lives of some of his clergy. He was opposed by the corrupt and the corrupters, finally beaten and imprisoned. On his release, he resumed his work, often spending the whole night in chapel, praying for strength and wisdom.


Blessed William Richardson

Also known as William Anderson

Grew up in the area of Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. Studied at Rheims, France, the English College, Valladolid, Spain and the College of Saint Gregory in Seville, Spain from 1592 through 1594. Ordained in 1594. He returned to England to minister to covert Catholics, often hiding under the name William Anderson. Betrayed to the authorities by a 'friend', he was arrested and condemned to death for the crime of priesthood. He was the final martyr in the persecutions of Queen Elizabeth I; he prayed for her just before he died by being hanged, drawn, and quartered on 17 February 1603 at Tyburn, England.

Prayer for the Universal Church

Pray for those who have been wandering and wondering in the conciliar desert for lo over 40 years. Pray for the conversion of the Novus Ordo hierarchy from the highest to the lowest echelons of the clergy, who, in the same manner as the Arian bishops, have apostasized from the True Church which Jesus Christ established on the Rock of Peter. O God, our refuge and our strength, smite those failing to lead Thy Holy Church,
by and through the intercession of Saint Michael the Archangel; the Immaculate Virgin Mother Mary; Beloved Saint Joseph; Thy blessed apostles Peter and Paul; and all the saints.
Hear our fervent prayers for more holy priests consecrated according to Thy will;
Provide Your Church leadership with the courage to convert all heretics, pagans, false idolaters and false god worshipers, and especially non-Catholics who refuse to accept the One True Church founded by Your Son and our Redeemer, Christ Jesus;

>Heresy has raised its ugly head in every age, requiring the continuing vigilance of the successors of Blessed Apostle Saint Peter to protect the deposit of faith. It is the custom for Traditional Catholics to mark above their entrance doors in chalk the symbol C+20+M+08+B. Hopefully the chalk is blessed on the feast by the priest when he also blessed the gold, frankincense and myrh. The formula includes the Roman Numerals of the year MMVIII ( 2008 ); below it on the next line is the above symbol: C+20+M+08+B. The order begins C for Caspar; then a cross (+) which is followed by the first two numerals of the millennium 20, followed by another cross (+); then M for Melchior; then another cross (+), followed by the last two numerals of the year, then another cross (+), and finally B for Balthasar. It is a way for the faithful to recognize in their homes the Epiphany and the Kingship of Jesus Christ. The four crosses represent both the four centuries of waiting for the Messias, but more specifically the four gospels in which His truths and Kingship are proclaimed. This marking the threshholds of our homes is a beautiful custom that has been lost in today's culture when things of God are shelved for things of man.

The Month Of The Passion of Our Lord

Our Lord's Sacred Passion and The Work of The Holy Angels

The Holy Season of Lent is very special to the Work of the Holy Angels. It is the heart and soul of the O.S.A. mission to meditate upon and accompany our Lord in His redemptive passion for the sanctification of the sacramental priesthood. This time spent with Our Lord in the Garden of Gethsemani is a remembrance of His passion which brought Him to the point of sweating His most precious blood. Our Lord suffered an agony so great as He submitted His Will to the Will of the Eternal Father. The holy angels were a witness to this great act of love; as the drops of the most precious blood fell upon the ground for us sinners. God sent to Jesus an angel to console and strengthen Him for His passion was about to begin.

Praying for the sanctification of the sacramental priesthood in this way is a call and each member who accepts the call to pray will do well to have his or her guardian angel accompany them in this hour; as he knows the power of reparation, adoration and contemplation. Remember that your guardian angel is eternally in the presence of God and it is God's Will that we as members of the body of Christ make intercession for our priests. Through the powerful intercession of the Passio Domini we are offering to the Heart of God the precious blood that was shed in the Garden of Gethsemani as consolation and strength for our Priests so that they may continue to administer to the body of Christ the sacraments of the Church. As an angel was sent to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemani, so too are we imploring God to send an angel to help our priests. In this issue we have printed for your private use a "Litany of the Passion," from the book "Favorite Litanies", by Fr. Albert Hebert. Please pray for your adopted priests in a special way in this lenten season.

History Of The Rosary

Tradition holds that Our Lady gave the Rosary to Saint Dominic Guzman in 1206 as a form of gospel-preaching and popular prayer. For more than seven centuries, the Rosary devotion has been one of the most popular devotional practices in the church. Its combination of vocal and mental prayer have made it a prime tool for contemplation. Jesus is the author and source of grade; Our Lady's Rosary is the key to open the treasury of grace to us.

Although prayer beads had been popular before Dominic's time, he and his friars quickly adopted the Rosary as an excellent way to teach the mysteries of Christianity to a largely illiterate European population. In 1470, Blessed Alan of Rupe founded the first Rosary Confraternity, and thereby launched the Dominican Order as the foremost missionaries of the Rosary. Through the efforts of Blessed Alan and the early Dominicans, this prayer form spread rapidly throughout Western Christendom.

The meditations on the fifteen mysteries serve as reminders of incidents in the lives of Christ and Mary. These are divided into the joyful, sorrowful, and glorious mysteries. Thirteen of the mysteries come from incidents in the New Testament. One, the assumption of Mary into heave, comes from Sacred Tradition. The fifteens, the Crowning of Mary as Queen of Heaven is thought to be derived from images in the Book of Revelation. These meditations make the Rosary a reflection on the fundamental beliefs of our Faith.

Through the years, Our Lady has re-affirmed her approval of this devotion, and her pleasure in the title "Queen of the Rosary." To Blessed Alan, she made fifteen promises to those who devoutly recite her beads. She told him, ".. immense volumes would have to be written if all the miracles of my Holy Rosary were to be recorded." Our Lady's promises are:

  • Those who shall have served me constantly by reciting the Rosary shall receive some special grace.


I promise my special protection and great graces to all who devoutly recite my Psalter.<

  • The Rosary shall be a most powerful armor against hell; it shall destroy vices, weaken sin, overthrow unbelief.

  • It shall make virtues and good works to flourish again; it shall obtain for souls abundant mercies of God; it shall win the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and life them to a desire of things eternal. Oh, how many souls will be sanctified by this means !


  • The soul which has recourse to me through the Rosary shall not perish.


  • Whoever shall have recited the Rosary devoutly and with meditation on its mysteries, shall never be overcome by misfortunes, shall not experience the anger of God, shall not be lost by a sudden death; but if he be in sin he shall be converted; and if he be in grace, he shall persevere and be made worth of eternal life.


  • Truly devoted servants of my Rosary shall not die without the Sacraments.


  • It is my will that those who recite my Rosary have, in life and in death, light and the plenitude of graces; and in life and death, may participate in the merits of the saints.


  • Every day I deliver from Purgatory souls devoted to my Rosary.


  • True servants of my Rosary shall enjoy great glory in heaven.


  • Whatever you shall ask through the Rosary, you shall obtain.


  • I will assist in every necessity those who propagate my Rosary.


  • I have obtained form my Son that all members of the Confraternity of my Rosary may have in life and in death all the blessed as their associated.


  • All who recite my Rosary are my children and the brethren of my Only Begotten Son Jesus Christ.


  • Devotion to my Rosary is a great sign of predestination.

Our Lady told Blessed Bartolo Longo to propagate the Rosary, and promised that those who would propagate this devotion would be saved. In 1884, Our Lady of Pompeii appeared at Naples to Fortuna Agrelli, who was desperately ill. She told Fortuna that the title "Lady of the Holy Rosary" was one which was particularly pleasing to her, and cured Fortuna of her illness.

At Lourdes, Our Lady told Saint Bernadette to pray many rosaries. When Bernadette saw the beautiful lady, she instinctively took her Rosary in her hands and knelt down. The lady made a sign of approval with her head, and took into her hands a Rosary which hung on her right arm. As Bernadette prayed, Our Lady passed the beads of her Rosary through her fingers, but said nothing except the Gloria at the end of each decade. At Fatima, Mary told the children to pray the Rosary often.

Popes throughout history have loved the Rosary. Not a single Pope in the last four hundred years has failed to urge devotion to the Rosary. From Pope Sixtus IV, in 1479, to the present day, all popes have urged the use of this devotion, and enriched its recitation with indulgences.

Pius XI dedicated the entire month of October to the Rosary.

Pope Saint Pius X said :

"Of all the prayers, the Rosary is the most beautiful and the richest in graces; of all, it is the one most pleasing to Mary, the Virgin Most Holy."

Pope Leo XIII repeatedly recommended the Rosary as a most powerful means whereby to move God to aid us in meeting the needs of the present age. In 1883, he inserted the invocation, "Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us ! " into the Liturgy for the Universal Church. John XXIII who was particularly faithful to the daily recital of the whole Rosary has said, " We can never sufficiently recommend the saying of the Rosary, not simply with the lips but with attention of the soul to the divine truths, with a heart filled with love and gratitude." John Paul II tells us to "... love the simple, fruitful prayer of the Rosary." Many of the Saints, and a number of the religious orders have praised the Rosary. Saint Charles said he depended on the Rosary almost entirely for the conversion and sanctification of his diocese. Founders of most religious orders have either commanded or recommended the daily recitation of the Rosary. The Benedictines speedily adapted this devotion in their ancient cloisters. The Carmelites were happy to receive the Rosary as well as their rule from the Dominicans. The Franciscans made their rosaries out of wood, and preached this devotion as well as poverty. The Servites wore their rosaries as a badge of that servitude which is the only true liberty. Inspired by the example of their founder, the Jesuits invariably propagated the devotion. Saint Francis Xavier used the touch of his chaplet as a means of healing the sick. Saint Vincent de Paul instructed the members of his order to depend more on the Rosary than upon their preaching.

Our ancestors had recourse to the Rosary as an every- ready refuge in misfortune, and as a pledge and a proof of their Christian faith and devotion. Saint Dominic used the Rosary as a weapon in his battle against the Albigensian heresy in France. In the last century, the Christian successes over the Turks at Temesvar and at Corfu coincided with the conclusion of public devotions of the Rosary. During the penal days in Ireland, the Rosary bound the Irish Catholics together as the church militant. When it was a felony to teach the Catholic Catechism, and death for a priest to say Mass, the Irish mothers used their rosaries to tell their little ones the story of Jesus and Mary, and thus kept the Faith green in the hearts of their children. Saint John Vianney, the Cure d'Ars, declared emphatically that in the nineteenth century it was the Rosary which restored religion in France. Likewise, in the dark days of persecution in Mexico, in our own century, the sturdy Mexican Catholics clung faithfully to their rosaries. The martyr Miguel Pro was allowed his last request before being shot by a firing squad --- he knelt and prayed his Rosary. A special society, the Society of the Living Rosary, was founded by the Venerable Marie Pauline Jaricot in the city of Lyons, France, in 1826. She formed bands of fifteen members who each said one decade of the Rosary daily. Thus, the entire Rosary is said collectively by the members of each circle daily.

Father Timothy Ricci, O.P., instituted the Perpetual Rosary, or Mary's Guard of Honor, in 1635. The aim of this devotion is to unite the members in such a way that some devoted watchers will ever be found in prayer and praise at Our Lady's shrine, telling their beads for the conversion of sinners, the relief of the dying, and the succor of the dead. In Belgium, the Dominican nuns of the Third Order established a monastery for the express purpose of maintaining the Perpetual Rosary, so that there it became not merely the devotion of a society, but the distinctive work of a community. A number of shrines of the order are to be found in the United States. Here, the Rosary is said day and night by members of the community. Rosary processions are held, and pilgrims sing again and again the praises of the Heavenly Queen of all Roman Rite Catholics.

Our Lady has 117 blessed titles. Above all, She selected this title at Fatima: "I am the Lady of the Rosary."

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary that never was it known that anyone who fled to Your protection, implored Your help, or sought Your intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, we fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, our Mother. To You we come; before You we stand, sinful and sorrowful. Defend us in our battle against all who mock the Sacred Bible written by The One True God, The Most Holy Trinity;

Be our protection against the wickedness

And temptations of the devil;

May Almighty God rebuke him, we humbly pray,

And do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,

By the power of God,

Thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits

Who wander through the world

Consecrate yourselves totally to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
