The Shroud has been under the authority of the Catholic Church since its first exposition in 1352. It has been in and out of the church's custody at various times since then. It has been owned by the church only since the death of its previous owner, the last King of Italy, Umberto II, on March 18, 1983, when the Shroud was bequeathed to the Holy See.

Since the Bishop of Rome’s church claims to be the one true church, isn’t EVERYTHING technically, according to this doctrine, “under the authority of the (Roman) Catholic Church?”
