by the terebinth at the memorial pillar in Shechem.

Jotham went to the top of Mount Gerizim and, standing there,
cried out to them in a loud voice:
Hear me, citizens of Shechem, that God may then hear you!
Once the trees went to anoint a king over themselves.
So they said to the olive tree, Reign over us.
But the olive tree answered them, Must I give up my rich oil,
whereby men and gods are honored,
and go to wave over the trees?
Then the trees said to the fig tree, Come; you reign over us!
But the fig tree answered them,
Must I give up my sweetness and my good fruit,
and go to wave over the trees?
Then the trees said to the vine, Come you, and reign over us.

But the buckthorn replied to the trees,
If you wish to anoint me king over you in good faith,
come and take refuge in my shadow.

Jesus told his disciples this parable:
The Kingdom of heaven is like a landowner
who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard.
After agreeing with them for the usual daily wage,
he sent them into his vineyard.
Going out about nine oclock,
he saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
and he said to them, You too go into my vineyard,
and I will give you what is just.
So they went off.
And he went out again around noon,
and around three oclock, and did likewise.
Going out about five oclock,
he found others standing around, and said to them,
Why do you stand here idle all day?
They answered, Because no one has hired us.
He said to them, You too go into my vineyard.
When it was evening the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman,
Summon the laborers and give them their pay,
beginning with the last and ending with the first.
When those who had started about five oclock came,
each received the usual daily wage.
So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more,
but each of them also got the usual wage.
And on receiving it they grumbled against the landowner, saying,
These last ones worked only one hour,
and you have made them equal to us,
who bore the days burden and the heat.
He said to one of them in reply,
My friend, I am not cheating you.
Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage?
Take what is yours and go.
What if I wish to give this last one the same as you?
Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money?
Are you envious because I am generous?
Thus, the last will be first, and the first will be last.

The Immaculate Heart [of Mary]
This devotion has received new emphasis in this century from the visions given to Lucy Dos Santos, oldest of the visionaries of Fatima, in her convent in Tuy, in Spain, in 1925 and 1926. In the visions Our Lady asked for the practice of the Five First Saturdays to help make amends for the offenses given to her heart by the blasphemies and ingratitude of men. The practice parallels the devotion of the Nine First Fridays in honor of the Sacred Heart.
On October 31, 1942, Pope Pius XII made a solemn Act of Consecration of the Church and the whole world to the Immaculate Heart. Let us remember this devotion year-round, but particularly through the month of August.
INVOCATIONS
O heart most pure of the Blessed Virgin Mary, obtain for me from Jesus a pure and humble heart.
Sweet heart of Mary, be my salvation.
ACT OF CONSECRATION
Queen of the most holy Rosary, help of Christians, refuge of the human race, victorious in all the battles of God, we prostrate ourselves in supplication before thy throne, in the sure hope of obtaining mercy and of receiving grace and timely aid in our present calamities, not through any merits of our own, on which we do not rely, but only through the immense goodness of thy mother's heart. In thee and in thy Immaculate Heart, at this grave hour of human history, do we put our trust; to thee we consecrate ourselves, not only with all of Holy Church, which is the mystical body of thy Son Jesus, and which is suffering in so many of her members, being subjected to manifold tribulations and persecutions, but also with the whole world, torn by discords, agitated with hatred, the victim of its own iniquities. Be thou moved by the sight of such material and moral degradation, such sorrows, such anguish, so many tormented souls in danger of eternal loss! Do thou, O Mother of mercy, obtain for us from God a Christ-like reconciliation of the nations, as well as those graces which can convert the souls of men in an instant, those graces which prepare the way and make certain the long desired coming of peace on earth. O Queen of peace, pray for us, and grant peace unto the world in the truth, the justice, and the charity of Christ.
Above all, give us peace in our hearts, so that the kingdom of God may spread its borders in the tranquillity of order. Accord thy protection to unbelievers and to all those who lie within the shadow of death; cause the Sun of Truth to rise upon them; may they be enabled to join with us in repeating before the Savior of the world: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will."
Give peace to the nations that are separated from us by error or discord, and in a special manner to those peoples who profess a singular devotion toward thee; bring them back to Christ's one fold, under the one true Shepherd. Obtain full freedom for the holy Church of God; defend her from her enemies; check the ever-increasing torrent of immorality; arouse in the faithful a love of purity, a practical Christian life, and an apostolic zeal, so that the multitude of those who serve God may increase in merit and in number.
Finally, even as the Church and all mankind were once consecrated to the Heart of thy Son Jesus, because He was for all those who put their hope in Him an inexhaustible source of victory and salvation, so in like manner do we consecrate ourselves forever to thee also and to thy Immaculate Heart, O Mother of us and Queen of the world; may thy love and patronage hasten the day when the kingdom of God shall be victorious and all the nations, at peace with God .and with one another, shall call thee blessed and intone with thee, from the rising of the sun to its going down, the everlasting "Magnificat" of glory, of love, of gratitude to the Heart of Jesus, in which alone we can find truth, life, and peace. IN HONOR OF THE IMMACULATE HEART

The first is that we ought to love and honor whatever God loves and honors, and that by which He is loved and glorified. Now, after the adorable Heart of Jesus there has never been either in heaven or on earth, nor ever will be, a heart which has been so loved and honored by God, or which has given Him so much glory as that of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Never has there been, nor will there ever be a more exalted throne of divine love. In that Heart divine love possesses its fullest empire, for it ever reigns without hindrance or interruption, and with it reign likewise all the laws of God, all the Gospel maxims and every Christian virtue.
This incomparable Heart of the Mother of our Redeemer is a glorious heaven, a Paradise of delights for the Most Holy Trinity. According to St. Paul, the hearts of the faithful are the dwelling place of our Lord Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ Himself assures us that the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost take up Their abode in the hearts of those who love God. Who, therefore, can doubt that the Most Holy Trinity has always made His home and established the reign of His glory in an admirable and ineffable manner in the virginal Heart of her who is the Daughter of the Father, the Mother of the Son, the Spouse of the Holy Ghost, who herself loves God more than all other creatures together?
How much then are we not obliged to love this exalted and most lovable Heart?

Abimelech tries to become king of Shechem

Commentary:
9:1-57. This account of Abimelechs royal ambitions teaches the lesson that the
only king of Israel is the Lord, or whomever he anoints, and it has to be read in
that religious context. When someone schemes to obtain political power, he
could well be motivated by greed or ambition rather than a sense of public ser-
vice. Certainly that was true in Abimelechs case: he murdered his brothers in
order to gain power. Even though at first he convinced the people of Shechem to
go along with him, he eventually lost their trust and was defeated, after causing
great suffering to those who were naïve enough to ease his path to power.
Jothams fable is a nice example of how those who have really important things
to do (the olive, the fig tree and the vine) find excuses for not getting involved in
government, whereas those most unsuited for it (the bramble) have ambitions
in that direction (vv. 7-15). Abimelech is very different from the other judges:
they, men and women chosen by God, bring the people salvation and peace; he
acts only for himself, and brings destruction, fire and death.

The Parable of the Laborers in the Vineyard

Commentary:
1-16. This parable is addressed to the Jewish people, whom God called
at an early hour, centuries ago. Now the Gentiles are also being called
— with an equal right to form part of the new people of God, the Church.
In both cases it is a matter of a gratuitous, unmerited, invitation; there-
fore, those who were the “first” to receive the call have no grounds for
complaining when God calls the “last” and gives them the same reward
— membership of His people. At first sight the laborers of the first hour
seem to have a genuine grievance—because they do not realize that to
have a job in the Lord’s vineyard is a divine gift. Jesus leaves us in no
doubt that although He calls us to follow different ways, all receive the
same reward—Heaven.
2. “Denarius”: a silver coin bearing an image of Caesar Augustus
(Matthew 22:19-21).
3. The Jewish method of calculating time was different from ours. They
divided the whole day into eight parts, four night parts (called “watches”)
and four day parts (called “hours”)—the first, third, sixth and ninth hour.
The first hour began at sunrise and ended around nine o’clock; the third
ran to twelve noon; the sixth to three in the afternoon; and the ninth from
three to sunset. This meant that the first and ninth hours varied in
length,
decreasing in autumn and winter and increasing in spring and summer
and the reverse happening with the first and fourth watches.
Sometimes intermediate hours were counted—as for example in verse 6
which refers to the eleventh hour, the short period just before sunset,
the end of the working day.

add: “For many are called, but few are chosen” (cf. Matthew 22:14).

The Lord hurls a word against Jacob, it falls on Israel. All the people of Ephraim and all the inhabitants of Samaria know it. In their pride they have said, speaking in the arrogance of their heart, The bricks have fallen down, then we will build with dressed stone; the sycamores have been cut down, we will put cedars in their place. But the Lord is marshalling his peoples enemies against them, he is stirring up their foes: to the east, Aram, to the west, the Philistines devour Israel with gaping jaw. Yet his anger is not spent, still his hand is raised to strike. But the people have not come back to him who struck them, they have not come looking for the Lord of Hosts; hence the Lord has cut head and tail from Israel, palm branch and reed in a single day. And so the Lord will not spare their young men, will have no pity for their orphans and widows. Since the whole people is godless and evil, its speech is madness. Queen of the world and of peace | |
Observe how fitting it was that even before her assumption the name of Mary shone forth wondrously throughout the world. Her fame spread everywhere even before she was raised above the heavens in her magnificence. Because of the honour due her Son, it was indeed fitting for the Virgin Mother to have first ruled upon earth and then be raised up to heaven in glory. It was fitting that her fame be spread in this world below, so that she might enter the heights of heaven on overwhelming blessedness. Just as she was borne from virtue to virtue by the Spirit of the Lord, she was transported from earthly renown to heavenly brightness. So it was that she began to taste the fruits of her future reign while still in the flesh. At one moment she withdrew to God in ecstasy; at the next she would bend down to her neighbours with indescribable love. In heaven angels served her, while here on earth she was venerated by the service of men. Gabriel and the angels waited upon her in heaven. The virgin John, rejoicing that the Virgin Mother was entrusted to him at the cross, cared for her with the other apostles here below. The angels rejoiced to see their queen; the apostles rejoiced to see their lady, and both obeyed her with loving devotion. Dwelling in the loftiest citadel of virtue, like a sea of divine grace or an unfathomable source of love that has everywhere overflowed its banks, she poured forth her bountiful waters on trusting and thirsting souls. Able to preserve both flesh and spirit from death she bestowed health-giving salve on bodies and souls. Has anyone ever come away from her troubled or saddened or ignorant of the heavenly mysteries? Who has not returned to everyday life gladdened and joyful because his request had been granted by the Mother of God? She is a bride, so gentle and affectionate, and the mother of the only true bridegroom. In her abundant goodness she has channelled the spring of reasons garden, the well of living and life-giving waters that pour forth in a rushing stream from divine Lebanon and flow down from Mount Zion until they surround the shores of every far-flung nation. With divine assistance she has redirected these waters and made them into streams of peace and pools of grace. Therefore, when the Virgin of virgins was led forth by God and her Son, the King of kings. amid the company of exulting angels and rejoicing archangels, with the heavens ringing with praise, the prophecy of the psalmist was fulfilled, in which he said to the Lord: At your right hand stands the queen, clothed in gold of Ophir. |

Queenship of Mary
Pius XII established this feast in 1954. But Marys queenship has roots in Scripture. At the Annunciation Gabriel announced that Marys Son would receive the throne of David and rule forever. At the Visitation, Elizabeth calls Mary mother of my Lord. As in all the mysteries of Marys life, Mary is closely associated with Jesus: Her queenship is a share in Jesus kingship. We can also recall that in the Old Testament the mother of the king has great influence in court.
In the fourth century St. Ephrem called Mary Lady and Queen and Church Fathers and Doctors continued to use the title. Hymns of the eleventh to thirteenth centuries address Mary as queen: Hail, Holy Queen, Hail, Queen of Heaven, Queen of Heaven. The Dominican rosary and the Franciscan crown as well as numerous invocations in Marys litany celebrate her queenship. The feast is a logical follow-up to the Assumption and is now celebrated on the octave day of that feast. In his encyclical To the Queen of Heaven, Pius XII points out that Mary deserves the title because she is Mother of God, because she is closely associated as the New Eve with Jesus redemptive work, because of her preeminent perfection and because of her intercessory power. The faithful, under the guidance of an unerring Catholic instinct, have ever recognized the queenly dignity of the Mother of "The King of kings and Lord of lords": the Fathers, the Doctors of the Church, Popes, down through the centuries, have given authoritative expression to this truth and the crowning testimony to this common belief is to be found clearly expressed in the wonders of art and in the profound teaching of the liturgy. In their turn theologians have shown the fitting nature of this title of Queen as applied to the Mother of God, since she was so closely associated with the redemptive work of her Son and is the Mediatrix of all graces. Pius XII, by his encyclical letter of October 11, 1954, granted the unanimous desire of the faithful and their pastors and instituted the feast of the Queenship of Mary, giving sanction thus to a devotion that was already paid by the faithful throughout the world to the sovereign Mother of heaven and earth.
Before the reform of the General Roman Calendar this feast was celebrated on May 31 and today was the feast of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary which is now celebrated on the Saturday following the Second Sunday after Pentecost. It was also the commemoration of Sts. Timothy, Hippolytus and Symphorian. St. Timothy is a Roman martyr put to death in 303 or 306 during the last persecution. His body lies at St. Paul's-Outside-the-Walls, near that of the great Apostle. The history of St. Hippolytus, martyred at Ostia, near Rome, remains extremely obscure; it is probably in error that he is called bishop of Porto. St. Symphorian was a martyr of Autun, put to death while still a young man in the second or third century. He is one of the great saints of Gaul and several churches were built in his honor. His Acts appear to be genuine.
Without doubt, then, does our holy Virgin possess a dignity that far transcends all other creatures. In the eyes of her Son she takes precedence over everyone else. In order to help us understand the preeminence that the Mother of God enjoys over all creation, it would help to remember that from the first moment of her conception the holy Virgin was filled with such a plenitude of grace as to surpass the graces enhancing all the saints. Recall what our predecessor Pius IX, of blessed memory, wrote in his Bull Ineflabilis Deus: "More than all the angels and all the saints has God ineffable freely endowed Mary with the fullness of the heavenly gifts that abound in the divine treasury; and she, preserving herself ever immaculately clean from the slightest taint of sin, attained a fullness of innocence and holiness so great as to be unthinkable apart from God Himself, a fullness that no one other than God will ever possess."
Spurred on by piety and faith, may we glory in being subject to the rule of the Virgin Mother of God; she bears the royal sceptre in her hand, while her heart is ever aflame with motherlove.

Everybody Is a Winner!
Matthew 20: 1-16 Introductory Prayer: Almighty and ever-living God, give me new strength from the courage of Christ the good shepherd, and lead me to join the saints in heaven, where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Petition: Lord, help me to hear your call to holiness and to respond to you with great fidelity and generosity. 1. The Time Is Now. It is important to remember that Christ is trying to teach the Jews a lesson here. Just because they were the chosen peopleand had been worshipping the one, true God from the beginning of recorded historydid not mean that the Gentiles could not receive all the same perks as Jews in the Kingdom of Heaven. Christ is ready and willing to make us all saints and crown us all with glory. However, this requires that you accept the Lords invitation and get to work. This parable goes to show that God is the always the protagonist. He is the one that always takes the initiative. None of us can take credit for being saved. It was not you who chose God. It was Christ who called you and expects you to bear fruit that will last. 2. Dont Just Stand There. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. He came that we may have life and have it abundantly. Jesus is not a cheapskate, but he is not a spendthrift either. It is true that he lavishly pours out his gifts on us, but he certainly expects some return on his investment. He wants his investment to work for him and yield high returns. In short, Jesus loves a blue chip Christian. He does not want us to remain idle in the face of evil and injustice. In fact, the only reason why evil practices continue to plague our society is because there are not enough good people standing up and taking a stand for what is right. 3. Every Little Bit Counts. You never know what might happen if you start praying more and doing all that you do for the glory of God. There is a lot to be said for hidden sacrifices and for doing what you do with purity of intention. For example, it is hard to imagine just how powerful the prayers and sacrifices of cloistered nuns are. In the same way, it is hard to imagine how meritorious it is for a mother to change her babys diapers with love. Moreover, who can put a value on the power of a single act of kindness whatsoever? Who can fathom the cosmic chain reaction of charity that is initiated by a seemingly insignificant good deed? Jesus is trying to get us to think out of the box and open our eyes to the value of doing ordinary tasks with extraordinary love. Conversation with Christ: Jesus, teach me the value of doing small things with great love. Show me how powerful love is. Make me an instrument of your peace and an apostle of mercy. Help me to live my life by faith and not by sight. May I judge things according to your standards and not by the standards of the world. Resolution: I will perform some small act of charity with love and great purity of intention for the sake of the spread of the Gospel. |

God's Generosity: Are You Tuned In? |
Judges 9:6-15 / Ps 21:2-3,4-5,6-7 / Mt 20:1-16
"They broke the mold when they made him." It's an old saying, and it comes to mind when we listen to today's gospel parable, which has nothing at all to do with fair labor practices, and everything to do with what God is like.
God is generous beyond all understanding, beyond all reason. He wants a rich, full life for every one of us, even though the best of us could never EARN it. He wants to GIVE it to us. And there is both the blessing and the problem. He wants to give, but are we ready to receive?
It's like the radio station that's beaming out a strong signal in all directions. Will that signal be received? Not if the radio is turned off or tuned to the wrong channel.
So there's the question: Are you receiving the signal that God is sending? Or are you shut down or tuned to the wrong channel? It's time to check: You may be missing the best part of life, nothing less than living daily in the company of a Father who really loves you.
