Lightning zaps Giuliani's remarks on abortion, Catholics

Manchester, New Hampshire - Was it a sign from above?

Lightning zapped remarks by Republican presidential contender and former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani during a debate Tuesday night, just as he began defending his pro-choice stand on abortion rights against criticism by a Roman Catholic bishop.

'I guess I'm here by myself,' Giuliani quipped after a loud buzz momentarily interrupted the sound system. He turned around, then looked skyward as the audience broke out laughing.

'For someone who went to parochial schools all his life, this is a very frightening thing that's happening right now,' he said.

Debate host Wolf Blitzer of Cable News Network (CNN) reassured Giuliani, an Italian-American, that the disturbance was caused by lightning from a thunderstorm near St Anselm's College, a Catholic university that hosted the debate in the northeastern state of New Hampshire.

Giuliani, on stage with nine other hopefuls for the centre-right nomination, went on to defend his position that abortion should be a woman's choice - a controversial stand in his mostly conservative party.

'My view on abortion is that it's wrong,' he said, 'but that ultimately government should not be enforcing that decision on a woman.'

Yeah why would our government enforce moral issues? Salvery was a moral issue just the same as abortion is. Dred Scott is the same as Roe V Wade.

St. Anslem -- pray for us...

Apparently you are in good with the Almighty to chastise Rudolf the red nosed politician.

(The debate was at Anslem's Catholic Catholic...)

Maybe because it was at a Catholic College, God thought He might remind Guiliani what being a Catholic means...

Chris Plant on WMAL 630 AM played the audio of the incident. There were four, count ‘em 4, lightning strikes affecting the audio during the Julia-Annie’s abortion answers. The strikes came only as he was answering the question.

And each time he was starting to preface his remarks with what a good catholic he was (or a reminder that he attended parochial school) ... this is a clear wake-up call..

I too would give him room ... I’ve had a close encounter with lightning hitting a telephone pole about 40 feet from me .. covered me and everyone with me in wood as the pole exploded.

There is a story that Eusebius relates in his History of the Church from 311AD. He says that St Peter was in a public building when he heard that a well known heretic, Cerinthus I believe, was in the building. St Peter got up and announced that he was leaving the building since it might well be struck by lightening.
