His final Sunday morning sermon in Jacksonville will be this weekend. He's been pastor of First Baptist Church for 23 years. First Baptist is one of the ten largest churches out of 39,00 churches in the Southern Baptist Convention.
His hottest controversy came during a pastors conference in which he made comments about Mohammed. For months after the story spread around the world he wouldn't comment except for an official statement read at church. But during our interview he made new statements on the issue. We'll broadcast those in our 11:00 story Sunday night.
His sermons always have ended with an invitation to accept Jesus, ask forgiveness for sins and be assured of eternal life and a place in Heaven. He says he's overwhelmed with the thought that "God gave up his only Son to die on the cross for sinners."

The local paper Florida Times Union has an article titled 23 things you might not know about the Rev. Jerry Vines (you do have to register there now to read articles.)
A Tidbit from the article:
They might know him as the two-time past president of the 16.2 million-member Southern Baptist Convention or as the preacher who sparked a national controversy in 2002 by declaring Islam's founder, the Prophet Muhammad, a "demon-possessed pedophile."
If you are in a different time zone you might be able to watch before going to your own church service. Please consider this a personal invitation to watch the service tomorrow and also the services during Pastor's Conference.

The final days for Dr. Jerry Vines as pastor of FBC JAX.
FYI local event
Excuse me, is Pastor Vines leaving his 9,000 member church ministry because he made some comments about Mohammed? If you know details please explain.
Has FBC chosen Vines sucessor yet?
He's retiring.
Dr. Vines is not leaving because of the muslim comments. He said that God is moving him into a different ministry at this time in his life.
It is my understanding that he is going to have conferences which will focus on training pastors and helping them in their ministry.
No official word yet.
A few months ago the chairman of the pulpit committee made an announcement to the church. He said they had not chosen a pastor but that the church bylaws stated that the prospective pastor would come to preach (more than once I think 8^] ) and the church would take a vote on him.
There's always been a bit of buzz around that they've picked someone but I don't know. I'm confident that the Lord will provide a committed Bible preacher to us at the right time.
Change can be good and we all need to be reminded to focus on the real priorities.
Dr Vines will definitely be missed.
The last night of Pastor's Conference we will have all our choirs from 2nd grade thru adult singing in the finale. It is going to be something, I can tell you that!!
I'm sure we're going to have overflow. It's been announced that over 9000 pastors are coming to conference this year. That means we will have to probably sit in the old auditorium or dining room to see the service. I'll get there as early as I can!
Baptist Bump
I wish him well in his new calling.
And, I hope you get a good seat! ;o)
LOL
If I can get in the building I'll be happy! 8^]
