Now that Father Bill and Mother Glyn Melnyk have done the right thing, it's time for the ECUSA's Office of Women's Ministries to do so as well. The fiction that the only problem with posting a Druid liturgy on the OWM Web site was a possible copyright violation isn't exactly passing muster with at least one Anglican archbishop:
A fresh crisis has broken out in the Anglican Communion after the American Church published a liturgy for blessing divorce and a "womens eucharist" promoting the worship of pagan deities.
One of the Communion's leading figures, the West Indian Primate, Archbishop Drexel Gomez, said that Americas action showed a "total disregard" for the Windsor Report's call for greater respect for the bonds of Communion.
The rites, Liturgy for Divorce and A Women's Eucharist: A Celebration of the Divine Feminine, were posted on the Episcopal Churchs official website, under its Office for Womens Ministries, for use by parishes.
Archbishop Gomez expressed horror at the development. "It is a pure mockery of the rite of blessing. Its acting with total disregard for the rest of the Communion and for the historic teaching of the Church. They are bent on going their own way."
He said that ECUSA's action breaches the bonds of Communion and that the issue would be raised at the next meeting of the Primates. "They will have to decide whether they wish to remain with us or not but we will not countenance that kind of behaviour and we will say so very strongly. They are on a path of self-destruction"
He said that the most that can be done at this stage is to express outrage as strongly as possible. The Ven Paul Gardner, The Chair of the Church of England Evangelical Council, called on the House of Bishops to make a strong statement, declaring how far the American Church has departed from historic teaching.
"The idea of the celebration of divorce is anathema, it shows us that the debate with ECUSA's leadership is about far more than just sexual ethics," he said.
Of course, these comments, coming as they do from a Third World primitive and a British caveman, will be brushed off as ignorant, exclusivistic, and judgmental. And the Episcopal News Service still thinks there's nothing worth paying the slightest bit of attention to in this now international story.
Is it time for the Missouri Lutheran Synod to add Episcopalians to the list of non-Christian denominations?
Dear African, Asian and Southern Hemisphere Anglicans:
We need help! Please send Bibles and missionaries as soon as possible to this benighted continent.
Yours truly,
Beleaguered Former Episcopalian
As I mentioned a few days ago, at this point, if any American Bishop wants my respect, he'll have to earn it anew through action, not words (although usage of such words as "heretic" and "apostate" would be welcome.)
When the Episcopal Church ordained an openly gay bishop a couple of years ago, I suggested replacing the Archbishop of Canterbury with the Archbishop of Kampala, since these days the Africans seem to do a better job of practicing Christianity than we do. It looks like my proposal still has merit.
