TRANQUIL WORK: CARDINAL NEWMAN & THE BIRMINGHAM ORATORY (30:00)

Come with us as we take a tour of the Birmingham Oratory, located in Birmingham, England. Based on a type of religious community founded by St. Philip Neri, John Henry Cardinal Newman established the Birmingham Oratory, erecting several buildings in the process. It was as a member of the Oratory that he wrote his famous Apologia pro Vita Sua, in which he defended his conversion to the Catholic Faith. The series also shows the Birmingham Oratory Church, erected as a memorial after the Cardinal's death.

The origin of the term "Our Lady's Dowry" as another name for England may come from as far back as the time of King-Saint Edward the Confessor, who was king right before the Norman conquest. However, the term's origin may have come as late as the reign of King Richard II, who was shown offering the orb of England to the Blessed Virgin Mary in a lost altarpiece that was once in Rome. The inscription with the altarpiece read, "This is your dowry, O holy Virgin, wherefore O Mary, may your rule over it." In the famous Wilton Diptych, which is housed in the National Gallery in London, King Richard II is shown with two of his predecessors, King Edmund (an Anglo-Saxon king who was martyred for his faith in 869) and St. Edward the Confessor, along with his patron saint, John the Baptist.

To tell you the truth, I don't! Does she hold questionable theological views?

"Does she hold questionable theological views?"

Not really - she's quite conservative in a very jolly hockey-sticks sort of way.

Have you ever seen any of the old Ealing Studios St. Trinian's comedies? - if you have you might recognise her!

If you want to watch these programs, you can watch it live off their website (you'll just have to take into account time difference - 6:30 pm EDT is 11:30 pm your time, possibly past your "bedtime.")

"Goody! Mrs. Catholicism: The Heart of History!"

Just as long as you remember that she is most definitely NOT a stereotype of the average English Catholic woman!

Don't expect anyone else to get a word in edgeways!

Who's "Mr Catholicism"? Are you referring to Jamie Bogle?

Conservative but not Traditional. I fear she may be Adoremus or worse .....

"Conservative but not Traditional."

Correct - I'm sure she's the kind of Catholic who Rod Pead had in mind when he coined the phrase "Pollyanna Catholics."

Interestingly though, her husband is of a decidedly more Traditional bent.

I saw the first episode of the new EWTN series last night. The Bogles were the hosts! They gave an interesting presentation.
