Brother Nathan Cochran is a monk on a mission, a Benedictine from Latrobe who's now at the Vatican, swept up in the excitement of seeing a personal hero made over into a Catholic saint.
On Oct. 3 he'll take part in a three-day liturgical party to mark the beatification -- the first official step toward sainthood -- of Kaiser Karl von Habsburg of Austria-Hungary. Like a hardworking diehard delegate to a political party convention, Brother Nathan, an art history professor at St. Vincent College, can't wait to see his beloved candidate installed.

Oh, brother. What is this guy going to be the patron saint of? The Wienerschnitzel?
No, he is not. What benefits from your patronage now?
I have no idea what that question means.
"[Democratic presidential nominee] John Kerry is a Roman Catholic, but he's promised that won't have an effect on his decision-making," Brother Nathan pointed out. "That's exactly backward from what the church teaches, and how Karl ruled. His Catholicism colored all his decisions. He wasn't ashamed of that."

Siobhan!!!! Nice to see you posting again! God bless you!
More importantly:
God judges individuals, but God judges nations too. The fruit of abortion is nuclear war, as Blessed Mother Teresa said. That fruit is about to fall from the tree. Pray fervently to stop it. Pray as if your own city was about to be erased.
You are a messenger of Christ no matter what state in life. Hold fast.
Have to admit that was pretty funny, but in all seriousness, Kaiser Karl von Habsburg is actually a pretty impressive figure, worthy of a study of character for Catholics and nonCatholics alike.
I posted an article on the subject of the late Emperor Karl's cause a few days ago; interested Freepers may wish to take a look at it as well.
Thanks for the post on the good and saintly Kaiser Karl. If he had been Emperor in 1914, we would have been spared the appalling bloodbath of World War I, and the West would be in much better shape than it is today.
What an interesting story ... and I'm happy for those who have promoted his cause. Someday I hope to attend the beatification or canonization of Father McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus.
But the poor man (Kaiser Karl, I mean) definitely had the Hapsburg chin :-).
Karl was an example for leaders everywhere. Unfortunately our HS history books teach......er........indoctrinate that
"kings (especially Catholic ones) are/were intrinsically evil......democracy (translated: organized confusion)= good.
And of course, it was good to destroy the Autro-Hungarian empire, and replace it with "democracy"!
My understanding of the situation, is that in this empire with its various ethnic groups, there was unity, but at the same time there was repect of local customs and semi-autonomy given in regional govt - which all helped t keep the peace.
