In response to the age-old dumb-blonde jokes, fairer-haired women are fighting back and having the last laugh.

This is according to a survey in FHM magazine which found that blondes are better than brunettes.

The results are part of fun research to establish which kind of woman makes the better girlfriend. The findings will be published in the November edition.

FHM put a team of blonde and brunette celebrities through a series of nine challenges. These ranged from general knowledge and drinking to endurance and sportiness.

However, brunettes have a better lung capacity Blondes were represented by The Res actress Irmarie Steyl and lingerie model Liza Botha; brunettes by fellow The Res star Elandrie Stryker and Miss SA finalist Lee-Ann Liebenberg.

The blondes won five of the nine challenges, the brunettes four.

The results revealed that blondes can play video games better, iron better, are more muscular and are better pool players.

However, brunettes have a better lung capacity, can hit a cricket stump from 20m away and down a beer faster than blondes. Oh yes, they are also more intelligent, having scored higher in the trivia section.

However, singer Mia, a brunette who dyes her hair blonde, disagrees with the findings.

"The survey is unfair, because it depends on the individual.

"There is this perception that blondes have more fun. I think it is generally more about the person you are and the people you surround yourself with."

I'm blond, and in college most men could not believe that I was an engineering major. Sometimes I would lie and say that I was in elementary education, and the men would just buy it.

I even had one guy say I was too cute to be in engineering.

Of course, now I can't say I'm blond. Now, it's dark (and some gray). I have to color it blond.
