Democrats and their allies in the Washington press corps have moved into political hyperdrive over a story that somehow managed to largely escape their attention for more than two months.
News that the Justice Department has now launched a full criminal investigation to discover who leaked the identity of a CIA operative to journalists - including columnist Robert Novak - has sent the story into full-fledged scandal mode. Novak published the information last July and presents his side on the opposite page.
Indeed, the same Democrats who just a few years ago supported the expiration of the independent counsel law, citing Kenneth Starr's probe of then-President Clinton, are now eagerly calling for its return.
That would be a mistake.

Meanwhile, many of the same Democrats who, back in the '90s, helped give one of their own, then-Rep. Robert Torricelli, a pass when he deliberately blew the cover of a CIA operative in Guatemala, are now calling for a wholesale inquisition into the Bush White House. The hypocrisy of these dirty, lousy Rats has reached another low. None of them said anything about all the dirt that was leaked about Ken Starr during the BJGate investigations. Sid Blumenthal leaked more than Al Gore at a cabinet meeting during those times, and the Rats didn't say anything.

It is reported that Sen. Patrick Leahy's leak got at least one person killed. His punishment? He was forced to resign his chairmanship of the intelligence committee.
