The Sweet Mint Tea Pot Dome Scandal
CNSNews.com ^ | 10/01/03 | Rich Galen

* Don't fall into the trap of believing -- because of the frenzied coverage and the hysterical statements of the Democrats -- that someone in the Bush White House "outed" a CIA covert agent.

* Before we start, let me say that there is a long, bi-partisan tradition of political stupidity in Your Nation's Capital. Paul Kratner of the Jefferson Airplane once said that San Francisco was "49 square miles surrounded by reality."

* If political stupidity were a crime, Washington, DC would be "49 square miles surrounded by razor wire."

* Ok, so, a former US Ambassador, Joseph Wilson, was sent to Niger in 2002 to see if he could find evidence of Iraq trying to purchase material to make a nuclear device.

* Wilson's idea of how to conduct an investigation was unique. In his July, 2003 NY Times op-ed piece on his investigation, he first waxed rhapsodic about his surroundings: "The city was much as I remembered it. Seasonal winds had clogged the air with dust and sand. Through the haze, I could see camel caravans crossing the Niger River (over the John F. Kennedy bridge), the setting sun behind them. Most people had wrapped scarves around their faces to protect against the grit, leaving only their eyes visible."

* Which tells us a little something about the level of editorial dysfunction at the NY Times last summer.

* Then Wilson detailed the guts of his investigation: "I spent the next eight days drinking sweet mint tea and meeting with dozens of people: current government officials, former government officials, people associated with the country's uranium business."

* This, in the business, is called "phoning it in."

* By the way, on May 23, 2003, according to the Federal Elections Commission, Wilson donated $1,000 to the Presidential campaign of one John Kerry, Democrat from Massachusetts.

* I'm shocked.

* All right, so what about the claim that the White House generally, and Karl Rove in particular, called reporters to out Wilson's wife as an undercover CIA operative?

* Rove denies it. The White House denies it. There is not the first thread of the first shred of evidence that Rove had anything whatever to do with this. But, to see where Wilson's agenda lies, this quote from Wilson (having gotten into the sweet mint tea again) on the BBC website: "It's of keen interest to me to see whether or not we can get Karl Rove frog-marched out of the White House in handcuffs."

* The New York Times reported on Monday that: "Mr. Wilson backed off somewhat from his previous statements that Mr. Rove had probably leaked the story. But, Mr. Wilson said, 'at a minimum, he condoned it, and he most certainly did nothing during the six or seven days after the Novak article appeared to discourage others from talking about it.'"

* So, the guy everyone is quoting on whether the Iraqis were trying to buy nuclear materials cites as his evidence against Rove... Ok, he doesn't have any evidence against Rove other than his modestly bizarre fantasy on that frog-marching-hand-cuff thing.

* Here's another tip: Any time Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer is the lead dog for the Democrats, you want to watch where you step.

* Unfortunately for Mr. Schumer and the Democrats there may not have been any law violated. According to the Washington Post, the following elements must exist:

- The disclosure must have been made by a government employee with access to classified information; (That's probably a go)

- The disclosure must have been intentional; (That's obviously a go)

- The person accused must have known the person identified was a covert agent; (That's not at all clear), and

- The person accused must have known "the United States is taking affirmative measures to conceal such covert agent's intelligence relationship to the United States." (Ah. Drat. There goes the case.)

* Robert Novak, the columnist who wrote the original column about Wilson's wife, said, "According to a confidential source at the CIA, Mrs. Wilson was an analyst, not a spy, not a covert operative, and not in charge of undercover operatives."

* If the CIA identified Mrs. Wilson as an employee, then the "affirmative measures to conceal" test was clearly not met.

* This is a tempest in a sweet-mint-tea-pot-dome.

* On the Secret Decoder Ring page today: A short explanation of the Teapot Dome Scandal; links to the Wilson NY Times op-ed piece, the BBC report, and a GREAT Mullfoto!

While I don't necessarily disagree with the basic premise here [that this is a tempest in a sweet-mint-tea-pot-dome], there's a glaring fallacy that I can't bring myself to leave unnoticed..

The person accused must have known "the United States is taking affirmative measures to conceal such covert agent's intelligence relationship to the United States." (Ah. Drat. There goes the case.)

Well, we don't know that since we don't know whether the person who revealed the info to Bob Novak or anyone else would've known Valerie Plame's precise status with the Agency. If the official in question knew she was an undercover case officer with the Directorate of Operations, then it inherently follows that this person knew "the United States is taking affirmative measures to conceal such covert agent's intelligence relationship to the United States."

* Robert Novak, the columnist who wrote the original column about Wilson's wife, said, "According to a confidential source at the CIA, Mrs. Wilson was an analyst, not a spy, not a covert operative, and not in charge of undercover operatives."

Here's the transparent fallacy: Bob Novak isn't the person accused under the Intelligence Agents Identity Act, but rather whatever officials Novak spoke with. It is those officials - not Bob Novak - whose knowledge is relevant from a legal standpoint.

Allow me to be the first.

This Clintonian article did everything except ask what the meaning of "is" is. It doesn't matter what you think of Wilson, going after his wife was an incredibly bone-headed thing to do. Worse than that, it was just plain wrong.

Regardless of wht his wife's title is, it is becomin apparent that she was more than just some "nobody" clerk. Even if she isn't the cloak and dagger, super-dooper, undercover spy that the Dems want her to be, exposing her served absolutely no useful purpose in terms of our national security and may very well have caused some damage. The mere notion that WH officials now feel as if they have the right to out CIA employees is damage enough.

Arguing over the strict legality of the move is beside the point. This is about "doing the right thing." Someone should be, at the very least, fired and publicly castigated for this and if DOJ sees criminal conduct they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Bush, for his part, needs to prove that he doesn't have any Clinton in him and force the perp to face the music. He should not tolerate this sort of stupidity from his people which is exactly the sort of scheitt that Clinton pulled all the time.

I have to admit that's pretty darn funny, even though this has nothing to do with the Cali election (and Arnold's gonna win, either way..)

Me thinks you have been hoisted by your own petard. Who is "going after" Wilson's wife? If she were not some undercover operative but only an employee, how is the mention of that "going after" her? It had previously been reported, during the "sixteen words" flap, that it was his wife who suggested that Wilson be sent on this mission. The real bonehead, perhaps another Clinton appointed political operative in the CIA, was the one who actually took that advice.

If I mentioned to someone where you worked, would you consider that "going after" you? The information was already public knowledge anyway.

The Democrats throw charges at Bush at the drop of a hat, greatly exaggerating the slightest little things, knowing that if they trumpet it loud enough some idiots will believe it. Did they have you in mind?

Suppose someone in the DemocRAT Party who is still embedded in the wainscoting of the Bush Govt. did this?

Not to overly tinfoil, but I smell a very big rat here.

You are still assuming that someone in the White House blabbed.

I find that highly doubtful. Even Novak says that a CIA employee told him, as well as that he already knew. Wilson even published that his wife was a CIA employee.

Except that we don't know that she was any such. This only appears (correct me) in the Newsday report from July, from an unidentified source.

The Justice Department would not have opened an investigation if she were not an undercover case officer.

Not only does Pelosi look strung out in that photo, they showed a clip of her on the news, and she appeared to be tremoring or something, and blinking like she was trying to fake sobriety. Both my husband and I said immediately "she looks strung out", so it is interesting that you made the same observation.

"If the CIA identified Mrs. Wilson as an employee, then the "affirmative measures to conceal" test was clearly not met. "

If she was covert or undercover, should the CIA have disavowed any knowledge of her being associated with the agency? According to Novak, they acknowledged she worked for them.

To tie all of the above posts together, Valerie Plame put her husband on the CIA payroll when he was assigned to go drink his sweet mint tea.

"I spent the next eight days drinking sweet mint tea and meeting with dozens of people: current government officials, former government officials, people associated with the country's uranium business."

Although she was "outed" as the supposed female James Bond,so was he as an avid democrat ,and,[ incidentally, the thousand or so bucks to Kerry was probably part of of the princely 'special assignment ' bonus he received as part of the CIA $ package.]

Pelosi is aghast in the photo above.

It is because she just learned that Ariana "outed" herself as the consumate Democrat under cover in the California recall in which she had posed as an Independent choice for governor...

[Her debate with Arnold ,et al, was hilarious..]

We're all missing a larger point.

Just about everybody in D.C. knew about her working for the CIA. It was widely known, so I doubt if she did much more than a desk job.

Her job was certainly no secret. They are having to go to extreme lengths to make something out of this.
