Majority Now Favors Recall; Schwarzenegger Leads Rivals (LA Times Poll)
LA Times ^ | 10-01-03 | Michael Finnegan

A solid majority of likely voters favors removing Gov. Gray Davis from office in the recall election Tuesday, and Arnold Schwarzenegger has surged ahead of his rivals in the race to succeed him, according to a new Los Angeles Times poll.

By 56% to 42%, likely voters support ousting the Democratic incumbent, a sign that Davis has lost ground in the closing phase of his battle for political survival.--SNIP--

Tapping that public anger is Schwarzenegger, whose campaign against "business-as-usual politics in Sacramento" has boosted his popularity as voters weigh alternatives to Davis. The Republican actor is favored by 40% of likely voters, followed by Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, a Democrat, with 32%, and state Sen. Tom McClintock (R-Thousand Oaks) with 15%.

Its 6 days to the election. The numbers won't change much between now and then.

But Arianna Huffington bared her claws on Larry King last night. She's made it her mission in life to "stop Arnold." What's the problem with that ditzy broad?

The Greek Harpy got a measly 1% of the vote. I mean this is liberal California! If Arianna Huffington can't make here, she can't make it anywhere else in the country. So much for the once and future stellar national career of the famed liberal gadfly from Los Angeles!

Ray Haynes:

We lost a solid conservative, who could have financed his own campaign, and got a solid conservative who could not, because Tom believed he was entitled to the Governor's office. This is not a battle over personality; it is a battle over principle. I believe the principles we believe in lost when Darrell pulled out, and they lost because Tom would not even consider anything other than his personal campaign for Governor.<.b>

As so many have been saying all along, TOM IS IN IT FOR TOM.

The curtain has been pulled back, the humbug has been exposed. So much for the phony "it's the principle" claims. So much for the lame "This is not a coronation, the person has to "earn" the position/votes." rants. Tom thinks it is a coronation and he's the chosen, "heir to the throne", beauty queen. No wonder he's got a huge chip on his shoulder.

Bye bye Tom.

Well, I'm sadly disappointed that so many people have taken it upon themselves to attack McClintock so viciously. McClintock is a fine conservative with a great record and does not deserve this abuse. I can understand that people don't think he can beat Arnold due to his money, fame, name recognition and backing by Wilson and other big name Republicans, etc, but this does not mean McClintock should have his name and reputation dragged through the mud. Whatever happens this election, we will still need conservatives like McClintock in California. Wish we had more like him.

Save it ambrose! Your guy has not been honest, is self-centered, he has lied about his motives, and does not deserve respect.

I think gop_gene may have said it best here when he /she said:

"If there is such a thing as reincarnation, I swear, this Greek harridan must have been Xanthippe in ancient times."
"Xanthippe--5th cent. B.C. wife of Socrates; proverbial for her peevish scolding and quarrelsome temper"

She must be the living reincarnation of Xanthippe. No wonder that poor man chose to be a martyr! Would you live with a woman who harried you day and night? I think that's the last we'll see of her in California politics.

I'd settle for "I think that's the last we'll see of her" ....... period! LOL

I have not savaged him. I have merely stated the obvious (as Huxley wrote was our duty in these times) that he should be smart enough to extrapolate his chances and work to elect the guy who supports our president and can win but might not if he stays in.

I bet I can find a similar statement on the FR archives from back in late Oct 2000, just about a day before the DWI revelation hit.

Your guy has not been honest, is self-centered, he has lied about his motives, and does not deserve respect.

Then it should be rather easy for you to provide proof of said lies/dishonesty.

Yes they might. If Limbaugh's "unimaginable" happens. If Davis resigns.

Davis' resignation would give the Democrats a last chance to retain power through Bustamante. If that happens the Pubbies better unite.

There is also some speculation that Bustamente is pulling out to support Davis and NO on Recall.
