The board of directors of the California Republican Party last night joined the growing list of influential state party organizations to support actor Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Oct. 7 recall election of Gov. Gray Davis.

After a closed-door meeting, the board unanimously backed Mr. Schwarzenegger despite the presence of a second Republican candidate, state Sen. Tom McClintock, on the ballot.

the poll also showed that if Mr. Schwarzenegger were to cede to Mr. McClintock, the staunch conservative would also beat Mr. Bustamante, with 56 percent of the vote compared with the lieutenant governor's 37 percent.

McClintock campaign spokesman John Stoos yesterday accused the state GOP of not having the courage to make the endorsement in an intraparty contest during last week's state convention.

"They couldn't do it when the convention was taking place and everyone was watching, so they had to cut a backroom deal," Mr. Stoos said, adding that Mr. McClintock remains determined to stay in the race.

"It certainly has no impact on what we want to do," Mr. Stoos said.

It was my thought that everyone was trying to be fair to Tom and give him more time to gain support.  Is this press statement by his spokesperson his way of saying thanks?

Here is a small hint:
It is a CNN poll.
Don't you think that it's odd McC's numbers are that much higher on the CNN poll? The libs want you to believe McC will win if Arnold drops out. Looks like many are buying it.

The party sure knows how to pick them! NOT.

capable of governing the state of California?

     No, is not 39

They're swallowing it...hook line and sinker.

Just like the swallowed the swill form the LA Times.

Any other time they'd be denouncing the Times and CNN for the liberal rags that they are. But...desperation breeds desperate acts.

From that same Gallup link:
6. If the choice were between Cruz Bustamante, the Democrat and Tom McClintock, the Republican, who would you be more likely to vote for: Cruz Bustamante or Tom McClintock?

Registered Voters 2003 Sep 25-27 Bustamante 42% McClintock 49%

For results based on the sample of 787 Californians who are registered to vote, the maximum margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points.

That is different than the 56% some LIARS on this forum are quoting.

In your first post you quoted 56% which is by PROBABLE VOTERS.

In your next post, a reply to me, you quote REGISTERED VOTERS, and the numbers are different.

Wrong-o. You are comparing apples to oranges. Why?

Do you think Tom McClintock should – or should not – drop out of the race for governor?

Republican/Republican leaners who are registered voters
2003 Sep 25-27 Yes, should 48 / No, should not 46 / No opinion 6
Republican/Republican leaners who are probable voters
2003 Sep 25-27 Yes, should 56 /No, should not 40 / No opinion 4

Like Freeper Wolfstar said a few days ago; the Tom supporters are the same types as the Keyes, Buchanan, etc., supporters; one agenda people.

Tell me again why I'm supposed to accept a 25% conservative candidate?

If he doesn't win, I'll blame the 'party leaders' for their poor judgment.

You made the statement simply refering to "more liberals polled". You made no reference to registered vs probable and I posted the only info available that broke support down by party. If there is another section (by party) for "probable voters" please feel free to post it. The part I posted was based on the 5 major candidates all in the race. The 56%, as I mentioned, was based on a 2 way race with Busta and McClintock only.

Not sure why someone quoting the 56% is a liar in your mind. I would think a poll of probable voters would be more reliable than that of simply "registered voters" who may not even vote. Nice to see Tom wins that head to head matchup too btw.

As far as apples and oranges, I was not comparing anything. I posted the result of one section of the poll for a head to head matchup. Then, in response to your eronious statement, I posted the only info from the poll that I found that broke things down by party. I made no comparisons betweens these two sets of numbers.

New Gallup Headline:

Either McClintock or Schwarzenegger Likely Winner in California if Other Dropped Out
Most of vote for one candidate would go to other

PRINCETON, NJ -- With Arnold Schwarzenegger the Republican front-runner in the California gubernatorial contest, many GOP officials have pressured California State Sen. Tom McClintock to drop out of the race, fearing he will divide the Republican vote and allow Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante to win. A CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll, conducted over the past weekend, shows that McClintock does indeed draw support away from Schwarzenegger, though not enough to deprive the actor of the lead. But the poll also shows that if Schwarzenegger were not in the race, McClintock would likely be in first place by a substantial margin rather than behind Bustamante.

Really? Can you link to the part of the poll that shows the 46 to 45 numbers? Maybe you could use it against those people who "lie" with that made up 56% number .

Things just get stranger and stranger!

Given that Bustamante is looking very weak, I am sure the Dems (Davis) would prefer to win this via a "no Recall". If the alternatives are "no recall"/Davis vs. a Republican, it seems they would be in a stronger position. I wouldn't put it past Gray to be the one smearing Bustamante at any chance.
