Historic National Freedom Ride to Stop in Omaha -- Saturday, September, 27th

Community Festival and Rally -- 5:30 p.m. at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial at 24th and Lake Streets in Omaha

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) and the Omaha community are mobilizing to protect the rights of immigrant workers. A coalition of Omaha Together, One Community (OTOC), immigrant assist organizations, student organizations, local businesses, elected officials, and local labor leaders will welcome the national Immigrant Worker Freedom Ride in Omaha on Saturday, September 27th.

SPECIAL -- PRE-EVENT BACKGROUND BRIEFING

For reporters interested in the Immigrant Worker Freedom Ride at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 26, 2003 at UFCW Local 271, 2502 Leavenworth St. in Omaha. Immigrant workers, community leaders and union representatives will be available.

The Immigrant Worker Freedom Ride draws on the experience of the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Building bridges to the broader community and drawing strength from the struggles of the past connects today's immigrant to a support network that can mobilize the social and political power to open the eyes, move the heart and change the laws of America to recognize the rights of immigrant workers. Immigrant workers now comprise much of the workforce in Nebraska's meat and food processing industries.

The rally in Omaha will focus on a community-wide, industry-wide organizing effort in the area's meatpacking industry. From organizing soccer leagues to unions, community and UFCW activists are building a model for empowering immigrant workers and winning community support. The effort has lead to organization and a union contract to immigrant workers at three Omaha-area plants.

The Omaha events will culminate on Sunday with an outdoor ecumenical prayer service at 9 a.m. at 24th and N Street (La Plaza de la Raza). The Freedom Ride send-off will be conducted by local religious leaders in five languages.

WHO: Omaha religious leaders, national and local labor leaders including UFCW International Union, immigrant workers, Mayor Mike Fahey, elected officials, and other community leaders

WHAT: Rally and community festival to welcome the Immigrant Worker Freedom Ride to Omaha. Music, food and a local children's group presenting their interpretation of "I Have a Dream."

WHEN: Saturday, September, 27, 2003 at 5:30 p.m.

This just proves that much of our population has no clue what is going on . The illegalskeep their wages down and should they decide to take a labor "action" the illegals they now promote will come and take those jobs without the weight of a union behind them

The sheeple Baaaaaa on

So true...

Another aspect of this is that many people work in professional jobs requiring degrees. An RN is a perfect example, as is a software engineer with a government contractor.

People in that position who aren't politically aware probably don't consider the illegals to be a threat to their livelihood. How wrong they are!

Mexican "professionals" (nurses , doctors engineers etc are covered under Nafta..

As we see on this forum, the ones that have already been out sourced or replaced by cheaper foreign workers see it , but it is too late.

People in that position who aren't politically aware probably don't consider the illegals to be a threat to their livelihood. How wrong they are!

It is not being politically aware , it is pride (they THINK ) they are irreplaceable...

They have closed 3 nursing programs in my area to bring shortages where there should be none.

My RN Daughter worked with both Mexican and Canadian nurses. They are here , but they fly under the Radar

I hope you nice RNs come out on top. I had to go to an ER a few weeks ago and it was very troubling to see the clientle there. Nobody seemed to be having an emergency, or to be able to speak English. Lo and behold, last week I read that the hospital(Nassau County Medical Center, NY) is in serious, serious debt(unpaid bills), and this a huge up to date hospital. What to do, what to do.......

Our hospital here in Sierra Vista, AZ (15 miles from the U.S./Mexico border) is writing off the cost of treating illegals/uninsureds as bad (uncollectable) debt. They come in and apply for AHCCCS (AZ Medicaid) with false info, they are treated, and when AHCCCS sends back a denial, there is no way to track down the patient for payment.

This practice has caused the closure of all but one trauma center in Tucson and all but one OB ward (ours) in Cochise County...

And it isn't limited to the border states, is it?

I shouldn't admit this on FR, but I have been a mailman for about 16 years, when the Nassau County Medical Center sends out a mass mailing of bills due it isn't unusual for 20 to 30 to go to one house with various fake and generic Hispanic names, or dozens more get sent to noneistent addresses, they all get returned unknown. I wonder how much they all add up to?

Maybe someday I can get treated at the same hospital our glorious politicians do.

Like I said, what to do, what to do......
