Sudden Appearance

Posted on 09/21/2003 3:45:21 PM PDT by Redwood71

I tried to go through my normal pattern of entry into the freerepublic.com sight and was stopped by a warning from what appeared to be microsoft, one of their style of boxes, that I was to make sure I was really wanted on this sight as it contained corrupt files. Additionally, it identified free republic and their web URL. Am I the only one that got this, or is this something new because we have been officially identified as a hate group by the backwoods Fresno Committee? When I saved it, it didn't stop me again. Any ideas.

Not seen by me. Occassionally I've gotten the "Apache" overload message when FR is busy but never this.

For gosh sakes, hit the Admin. Mod box, and tell him about it. This could keep people off FreeRepublic.

I've never seen it either, but I did have a co-worker of mine recently who said he had gone to FR after hearing me talk about it and that he got a message saying that it was a site on the FBI "list", whatever that means. He didn't elaborate.

I just thought of something that you might check on your computer.

Go into internet options and then security. Look at the restricted site page and see if FR is on the list of restricted sites. (You have to manually place a site on the list and it should be empty if you have not)

What exactly do you mean by "saved it"?
Please be specific.

There were options in the box to cancel, which kept you out of the sight, save, which would put it on my documents. But here it is in a gross form if I move it from documents to a word program. It reads in a box:

"You are about to activate an embedded object that may contain viruses or be otherwise harmful to your computer. It is important to be certain that it is from a trustworthy souces. Do you want to continue?"

And then there is a yes or a no check box.

This is coming from the original box which had the options and the only way to get into the sight was to save it to my documents. I using the norton professional worm killer and it has done excellent work for me for three years. This warning has never been seen by me before and just this one time. But I had to save it to get past it into the sight. Strange, huh?

That "warning" probably could have been "x"ed out, rather than clicked. Alot of popup ads and/or malicious code from websites are disguised as beneficial or necessary items. Folks instinctively want to click "OK" or attempt to cancel rather than just x out the box.
Word can run macros (simple programs and scripts), hence the warning.
What is the thing called when you see it in your documents folder?
What is the file extension?
I am curious and will research it if you can answer those questions.
I recommend you delete it.

I sent a copy of it to Jim in Fresno. It is on my documents at home and I am at the job right now. The funny thing was, the only way to get rid of it was to save it to documents. I tried every other possible possible before I saved it anywhere as I am normally very picky about. I am going to deleat it as soon as I get back on my system. But, I'm not terribly concerned as that's why I pay Norton the cash I do!

Well, if you can, let me know what you find out. I'm very curious. Next time something like that happens, you can get a screenshot of the window by pressing ALT+PRT SCR (copies active window to clipboard) and then paste into a graphics program. Press just PRT SCR copies the entire screen.
You can email me a copy if you like, FReepmail me for my private email address.
I worked at ZDNet-C|Net as a moderator in the Windows Help forums for a few years and never came across anything like that before.

It is a pop-up ad designed to look like an alert message. What you prpbably saved was a cookie.

Probably no big deal.

Thanks. It was really strange as I had never seen one like it before and it's approach was almost like it was trying to discourage me from using the sight, what with one way, only, to get past it and the term, "corrupted files." Thought I was being contacted by Scully, (not a bad idea).
