President Bush's popularity in Iowa has plunged as more Iowans have become disenchanted with his handling of Iraq and the economy.
A new Des Moines Register poll shows that 49 percent of Iowans approve of Bush's overall job performance, a drop of 18 percentage points from May. That's his lowest approval rating in the Iowa Poll since taking office in 2001. The president's highest mark was 84 percent following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

In 1988, Bush Sr was elected to his first [and only] term with 53.37% of the vote..
Most of the votes for Ross Perot would have been for the Republicans, if people had not been so steamed about the economy (and the economy to the vast majority of voters means jobs and income, not the gambling on Wall Street).
Democrats are much less likely to split for a third party candidate, for any reason, than conservatives who have been betrayed.
No one is talking about Iraq or the Bush tax cuts except Democrats. Many millions of non-union workers are talking about lack of jobs due to offshore outsourcing, illegal immigration, guest work visas, and the flight of much manufacturing to foreign countries, mostly China.
These are the issues that will cost Bush the WIDE margin of votes he enjoyed in the 2000 elections. I doubt if the Iraq war or the Bush tax cuts will affect his support to any significant degree.
"The tax cut was a mistake. They didn't make the case for attacking Iraq. We've reached a point now where we obviously need international support, and not making a case on the way in has made it worse. But he's at least sticking to his guns and not pulling out and saying let's get out of here," said Lewis, a political independent.
I live in the People's Republic of Iowa City. I don't know this guy, but I know the type. He's probably registered as an independent because the Democrats are too far to the right for him.
We're have over 100,000 Indians here taking good paying American jobs because our government and certain business interests unfairly manipulate our immigration laws to benefit themselves.
Many of our lower paying jobs that younger people and under-skilled would be doing are being taken because of the unabated exodus/invasion that is taking place on our borders.
GWB has indicated plainly (in no uncertain terms) that he has no interest in doing anything about our border problems, and the Indian press has a first hand account of him saying that he plans on doing nothing about H1Bs or L1s.
The arrogance and abdication of duty is what's pissing people off. I don't expect President to create jobs, but our government is supposed to perform certain functions properly to ensure our security and prosperity. Bush should be held accountable for horrid and self-serving handling of our borders and immigration laws.
It is also the job of the executive branch of the government to negotiate trade agreements and other treaties with foreign governments, and it the duty of the senate to confirm or deny the negotiated agreements. All three branches of government are sworn to uphold and defend the US Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic, and to bear true faith and allegiance to the same.
Allowing the blatant abuse of guest work visas, which are waivers to existing restrictions on immigration, is in itself a violation of those oaths.
When politicians are elected to represent the citizens of this country, regardless of their branch of government, and then pass laws or ignore laws to the detriment of their constituents, they are not representing the best interests of the citizens.
