re:Too many classroom lessons and text books contribute to a sense of historical indifference by focusing on America's darker moments, the report says.
Not only is this 100% true, but it's an understatement.

I see Bill Clinton is involved in this. I imagine he'll focus his efforts on getting textbooks to avoid discussion of Waco, Ruby Ridge, Somalia and the Impeachment.

Read the book The Death of Right and Wrong by Tammy Bruce and we can see just how unfair the schools are to our nation's schoolchildren.
Bruce is a lesbian and former president of the Los Angeles chapter of NOW. She has turned against the left and calls them malignent narcissists throughout her book as she explains the homosexual agenda being taught in schools.
It's not only an agenda but a push to teach kids how to act homosexual and what acts are specifically used by homosexuals. There have been some schools that have forced kids to act gay for the day and play act. It's sick and parents need to start paying attention.
Check out her book reviews on Amazon and promote the book to all parents you know who have kids in public schools.

Albert Shanker wasn't such a bad guy, although he did manage to pump up the teacher's union past anything healthy. But Sandra Feldman is a real leftist, IMHO, so for her to be saying this is nothing short of extraordinary. And she wouldn't be saying it if she didn't think it would be acceptable to the union rank and file.

In the mid 90's, I picked up a college history book one of the younger workers was studying. I contained all the liberal crap such as America forced Japan to attack. I look at the kid and I asked, "Do you realize this is all bull?" He did not have a clue that it was all lies.

The nation's schools are telling an unbalanced story of their own country, offering students plenty about America's failings but not enough about its values and freedoms, says a report drawing support across the ideological spectrum. Without a change of approach, schools will continue to turn out large numbers of students who are disengaged in society and unappreciative of democracy, the report contends.
We now have a high school in the US that is ONLY for gay students. There is no way that school will ever teach anything about America's values and freedoms.

I am an instructor in a state-supported university. My subject is hard science, but I do allow open discussion at times, on the theory that science does not exist in a vacuum. I've encountered some breath-taking examples of ignorance and misinformation, much of it originating with public-school teachers and other instructors. I've collected quite a few horror stories in recent years. Among other things:
During a discussion of French nuclear policy, it emerged that only 2 of 31 students had ever heard of Charles deGaulle and one of those was a French exchange student.
One young woman did not realize that there is more than one national military force in the world.
Several thought that the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki occurred within a few days of the Pearl Harbor attack and were direct and immediate (not to mention disproportionate) retaliation. They had heard the second part from teachers all their lives and assumed the rest, as they were probably meant to.
A number did not know that the Communists started the Korean War and refused to believe it when told.
A standard history text claimed that the US used nuclear weapons during the Korean War.
Most had no idea who or what the "South Vietnamese" were.
Quite a few believed that the US seized Texas during the Spanish-American War of 1898. (We are in Texas, btw)
A majority believed that thousands or even millions of Japanese-Americans had been exterminated in death camps during World War 2. Source: The usual suspects had told them that the detentions were "as bad as what the Nazis did."
