A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

GunsAreOK
GunsAreOK takes rhetorical aim at Clintonista Sidney Blumenthal at a recent DC Chapter booksigning Freep

GunsAreOK freeps with the DC Chapter. Here's a poetic photo (courtesy tgslTakoma) of GunsAreOK reflecting a Hilary booksigning Freep. He's the conservative-looking, thoughtful guy in the reflection, not the snide-looking liberal to the left.

(Hint: he's to the *right* people.)

He credits Rush and FreeRepublic for being the two “sparkplugs” of "whatever conservative activism" he has displayed over the past three years.

Ah, he's being too modest! "Whatever?" I show you "whatever!" The guy is his own sparkplug. Check it out.

SPARKY CHANTS

GunsAreOK has chants that take direct aim at the 'rats.

This I know, because he's been to, like, ALL the DC stuff for years, and he's very much into carrying just the Right sign with the Right chant. First and foremost, he's always one of the first to remember to thank the cops for protecting us from violent leftists. But other than a Known Leader of the DC Chapter's "famous cops cheers," his favorite chants are:
Ho, ho Ho Chi Minh:
Albert Gore and Lieberman!

Now, that's good rhetorical aim!

Or how about:

Hey, hey, NEA,
how many brains have you washed today?
Pretty good, huh? The latter chant was for a group of NEA teachers for Gore who showed up at Cheney’s house one Saturday evening in December 2000.

A SPARKY POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY

"I would describe my political philosophy as traditional conservative with some libertarian leanings." By that he means:
I support a strong national defense, tight control of the borders, and a coordinated national response to terrorism conducted by either political or environmental extremists. I support the cancellation of extra-constitutional Federal regulation and spending and using the eventual budget surplus to repay the national debt.
OK, pretty standard conservative stuff. But then GunsAreOK gets very sparky: He in fact favors the gold standard, tuition tax credits, the eventual privatization of both education at all levels and social security, voluntary public prayer in all venues, and a rollback of all Federal gun control laws to those that existed before 1927.

Oh, and he would, if he had his druthers, repeal all Federal prohibitions on the sale and distribution of marijuana, hashish, and hemp.

Wow? Did he just say that? He adds: "No, I don’t use either of the two drugs but flame away if you insist." Ahem, let me be the first: Guns, you're a loveable, sparky guy but you're *TOTALLY WRONG* on that one! {{{GunsAreOK}}} (He's very huggable anyway.)

GunsAreOK is of the view that "FR requires more active participation" than Rush, and he definitely gets out there and activates as a sparkplug in the group.

SPARKY, BUT ....

   BUT . . . WELL-BEHAVED:

GunsAreOK has been lurking on FR since May or June of 2000, but he only obtained a screen name only after the election controversy began. He credits Hail Cesar for telling him about the protests at the White House and at the Vice President’s house and for urging him to take the subway to the White House one November Saturday during 2000.

I saw right away that we were well-behaved but our presence seemed to incite the leftists to violence. How ironic. Weren’t these the folks who, according to the liberal media, advocated peace and good will and weren’t we the mean-spirited right wingers? As we found out later at the Supreme Court, the opposite is true and the fact is demonstrated even more dramatically today when we oppose ANSWER and its fellow travelers at our support the troops rallies.
Hey, Guns, if you won't outlaw drugs, will you at least agree to outlaw leftists? Hee hee.

   BUT . . . MODEST:

Seriously guys, one of the great things about GunsAreOK is that he offsets meglomaniacs like me. He's very nice and humble. Noting that the people not mentioned do not deserve any less credit for their abilities and efforts, GunsAreOK says he's in "continual awe" of Kristinn's exhaustive knowledge of constitutional government, politics, and the political players here. "He is unflappable when confronted with the leftists' boorish behavior." He salutes Angelwood for her "tireless work" on the logistics of our counter-protests, serving as chapter secretary, maintaining, with her husband, the chapter website. Oh, and of course, all those buttons. And he praises tgslTakoma's energy and signs as inspirational. "In city traffic, she can outdrive and outpark a great many of us guys." (Note he says "many of us guys," not "all." Newsflash: I don't know any guy alive who drives like tgslTakoma! It's an adventure!)

   BUT . . . A BIT OF A FOOD CRITIC!

One of his favorite activities after the Freep is getting together with the Freepers for a bite to eat.  He calls this Freeper Time (kind of like Miller Time).  For this activity, Luigis on 19th Street NW between L and M is an old standby.  "They've welcomed us during all seasons from the earliest freeps to the present."

But it's not all about the food at Luigi's. According to GunsAreOK, it's about the food at Smith and Wollensky steak house, just down the block from Luigis. He asks me tell you all that they have "very good, very good service too, but pricey (be aware of that)" and he also requests that I mention that Fran O' Brien's steak house--near 16th and K NW, and the American City Diner on Connecticut Ave NW just south of Chevey Chase Circle, are good.

Ahem. So, I'm thinking at this point: what kind of market is there for conservative food critics? In DC??!! I dunno, but however we got here, he does have a good lyrical grasp of his subject.  He notes that the pork sandwich at that last-mentioned establishment "is one of the best he's ever had anywhere and that you can get shakes with real ice cream there. What a combination! Two of the basic four food groups." Hee hee. He encourages me to note jokingly that, to look at him, you'd never know he likes to eat. Well, Guns, not more than the rest of us! Sheesh, can you get to work finding us some nice organic vegetarian place for our next meal? ;)

Really, I'm sorry if you're from out of town and actually had to read any of this, 'cause it makes no sense: you'd have to be a local to deeply appreciate just how hard it is to get a pork sandwich anywhere around these parts. I personally am not sure what one looks like . . . .

A RHETORICAL SURE-SHOT

It's signs, not guns, that should garner GunsAreOK the nickname "sureshot" at our Freeps. Here are a couple of signs from his Hilary Freeps.

Two pedestrians read the signs of Taxman, GunsAreOK ("Senator 4 sale" sign), leadpenny, and staytrue at a Hilary fundraising Freep. Angelwood has to adjust her glasses after reading one of GunsAreOK's signs!

Well, you can't see anyone in this photo from the Hilary Freep, but the signs are too funny for GunsAreOK not to be in the mix somehwere here! He'd be the first to object that he doesn't make up all these signs. 'Tis true. But I'm sure tgslTakoma has him in mind as an intelligent consumer of signs when her muse strikes: he always ends up holding the wittiest ones! He's got discriminating taste -- discriminating against leftists!

  Cool Stuff, GunsAreOK.
Congratulations on being

one of Freeper's Finest!

(Yup, and so far as I know, he always wears a nice, neatly pressed white shirt at Freeps.)

CNN reports:

Report says schools are unfair to America
Tuesday, September 9, 2003 Posted: 12:05 PM EDT (1605 GMT)

It's important that students understand not only our flaws and failings, but also the degree to which the United States was really the first modern democracy, and the degree to which it has inspired democrats around the world.
-- Larry Diamond, senior fellow at the Hoover Institution

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The nation's schools are telling an unbalanced story of their own country, offering students plenty about America's failings but not enough about its values and freedoms, says a report drawing support across the ideological spectrum.

Without a change of approach, schools will continue to turn out large numbers of students who are disengaged in society and unappreciative of democracy, the report contends.

Produced by the nonpartisan Albert Shanker Institute, "Education for Democracy" is the latest effort to try to strengthen the nation's underwhelming grasp of civics and history. Authors hope it will lead to curriculum changes and, in the short term, stir debate about today's social studies classes as people reflect on the terrorist attacks of two years ago.

Wide range of support: Beyond its provocative findings, the report is notable for the range of people and groups supporting it, from Republicans and Democrats to labor unions and conservative think tanks.

Those who have signed on include former President Clinton; Jeane Kirkpatrick, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and U.N. ambassador during the first administration of Ronald Reagan; and David McCullough, the historian and author. Dozens of scholars, professors, labor leaders and representatives of school groups have backed it, too.

"It really shows the depth of concern across the country about the status of our civil society," said one signatory, Lee Hamilton, president of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and a former Democratic congressman from Indiana. "How low voter participation can you have and still have a democracy?"

Too many classroom lessons and text books contribute to a sense of historical indifference by focusing on America's darker moments, the report says.

In a push to give a warts-and-all account of the struggles of democracy, schools have turned the nation's sins into the essence of the story instead of just a part of it, the new report says.

"Vietnam, Watergate, impeachment hearings, the rottenness of campaign finance, rising cynicism about politicians in general -- we've gone excessively in our society ... toward cynicism," said Larry Diamond, senior fellow at the Hoover Institution.

"It's a call for balance; it's not a call for purging from the history books honest criticism of our failings."

"People have been so anxious to be self-critical, probably with good intentions," said Sandra Feldman, president of the American Federation of Teachers, the nation's second largest union of teachers. "But we feel that's just gone too far over in that direction.

"We definitely have had terrible problems as a nation, but we also have a society that is totally different than that of a totalitarian society. Children need to understand and value what has been built here," said Feldman, also president of the institute, which is endowed by the AFT.

Besides, I'd miss Lucy too much...)

Shame, though, I'd love to have you on the jury if I were a prosecutor. You don't seem like the type who fails to recognize a lot of bull.

Hiya!!!! Anyone miss me?

I fought Microsoft and I won! Had to low level format my harddrive though :( Lost whatever wasn't backed up.

Well, my emails are overflowing, my pings have 'ponged' my "My Comments" section, I still have applications to reload, and some web work I'm behind in. But I will sign in tomorrow and say goodmorning. After that, backpeddle time!

Goodnight for now!
